  • In this study, we synthesized two $Y_3Al_5O_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ phosphors ($7{\mu}m$-sized and $2{\mu}m$-sized YAG) with different sizes by controlling particles sizes of starting materials of the phosphors for white LED. In the smaller one ($2{\mu}m$-sized YAG), its photoluminescence intensity in the reflective mode was 63 % that of the bigger one ($7{\mu}m$-sized YAG); the quantum efficiencies were 93 % and 70 % for the smaller and the bigger ones. Two kinds of white LED packages with the same color coordinates were fabricated with a blue package (chip size $53{\times}30$) and two phosphors. The luminous flux of the white LED package with the smaller YAG phosphor was 92 % of that with the bigger one, indicating that the quantum efficiency of phosphor dispersed inside LED package was higher than that of the pure powder. It was consistently confirmed by the optical simulation (LightTools 6.3). It is notable according to the optical simulation that the white LED with the smaller phosphor showed 24 % higher luminous efficiency. If the smaller one had the same quantum efficiency as the bigger one (~93 %). Therefore, it can be suggested that the higher luminous efficiency of white LED can be possible by reducing the particle size of the phosphor along with maintaining its similar quantum efficiency.

  • We developed a package of remote phosphor structure having blue LED chips and phosphors physically separated, and the characteristics were evaluated according to different classifications of phosphor coatings. Remote phosphor was produced by screen printing coating on glass substrate with phosphor content rated paste and heat treatment. After mounting Remote phosphor, which has been classified according to number of coatings, on top of blue LED chips, luminous flux, luminous efficacy, CCT and CRI were measured. The measurement results showed the most suitable characteristics of white LED package as a general light source when the content rate of phosphor in Remote phosphor was 80 wt.% with 3 layers of coatings and thickness over $12{\mu}m$.

  • In this research, a 6W white LED package with a Glass Remote Phosphor was developed to improve the life of an LED package. The Glass Remote Phosphor was fabricated by the Phosphor in Glass (PiG) method, wherein phosphor YAG:Ce was mixed with glass frit and then heat treated. A paste with 75wt.% of a phosphor substance and 25wt.% glass frit was coated on a glass substrate two times using the screen-printing technique and heat-treated at $800^{\circ}C$ ; this structure gave a luminous efficacy of 136.1lm/W, color rendering index of 74Ra, and color temperature of 5,342K, thus satisfying the requirements as a light source for lighting. Moreover, an IES LM-80 accelerated life test was conducted on the same LED package for 6,000h in order to estimate the L70 lifetime based on IES TM-21. The results showed guaranteed lifetimes of 213,000h at $55^{\circ}C$, 245,000h at $85^{\circ}C$, and 209,000h at $95^{\circ}C$.

  • This study deals with the accelerated life test of high power phosphor converted white Light Emitting Diodes (High power LEDs). Samples were aged at $110^{\circ}C$/85% RH and $130^{\circ}C$/85% RH up to 900 hours under non-biased condition. The stress induced a luminous flux decay on LEDs in all the conditions. Aged devices exhibited modification of package silicon color from white to yellowish brown. The instability of the package contributes to the overall degradation of optical lens and structural degradations such as generating bubbles. The degradation mechanisms of lumen decay and reduction of spectrum intensity were ascribed to hygro-mechanical stress which results in package instabilities.

  • There has been a critical issue in optical simulation of phosphors in LEDs due to their light-reabsorption properties. To improve the accuracy of optical modeling for a white LED package, we utilized the spectrum data of the phosphor-dispersed encapsulant film instead of the phosphor powder. By measuring white LED packages with green and red phosphors, the maximum difference between simulation and experimental results of a color temperature, a color rendition index number and a color coordinate corresponds to ${\Delta}T=95K$, ${\Delta}Ra=1.7$ and ${\Delta}xy=0.007$, respectively. Based on those results, the proposed method can well explain the change of emission spectra of white LEDs with more than two phosphors which introduce the complex optical phenomena such as absorption, reabsorption, light emission, reflection and scattering, etc.

  • In this study, an efficient machine vision based inspection system is developed for the in-line measurement of phosphor resin dispensing shapes on LED chip package. Since the phosphor resin (target material) has semitransparent characteristics, illuminated light beam is reflected from the bottom of the chip as well as from the surface. Since such phenomenon can deteriorate inspection reliability, a white LED and a 635nm laser slit beams are experimentally tested to decide suitable illumination optics. Also, specular and diffuse reflection methods are tested to decide suitable optical triangulation. As a result, it can be known that the combination of a white slit beam source and specular reflection method show the best inspection results. The Catmull-Rom spline interpolation is applied to the obtained data to form smoother surface. From the results, it can be conclude that the developed system can be sucessfully applied to the in-line inspection of LED chip packaging process.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the relative accuracy of digitized stone models of lower full arch, using two different scanning system. Methods: Replica stone models(N=20) were produced from lower arch acrylic model. Twenty digital models were made with the white light and blue LED($Medit^{(R)}$, Korea) scanner. Two-dimensional distance between the landmarks were measured on the Delcam $CopyCAD^{(R)}$(Delcam plc, UK). Independent samples t-test was applied for comparison of the groups. All statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software package(Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Windows, version 12.0). Results: The absolute disagreement between measurements made directly on the two different scanner-based dental digital models was 0.02~0.04mm, and was not statistically significant(P>0.05). Conclusion: The precision of the blue LED optical scanner was comparable with the digitization device, and relative accuracy was similar. However, there still is room for improvement and further standardization of dental CAD technologies.

  • We found that saturated water vapor pressure is the most dominant stress factor for the degradation phenomenon in the package for high-power phosphor-converted white light emitting diode (high power LED). Also, we proved that saturated water vapor pressure is effective acceleration stress of LED package degradation from an acceleration life test. Test conditions were $121^{\circ}C$, 100% R.H., and max. 168 h storage with and without 350 mA. The accelerating tests in both conditions cause optical power loss, reduction of spectrum intensity, device leakage current, and thermal resistance in the package. Also, dark brown color and pore induced by hygro-mechanical stress partially contribute to the degradation of LED package. From these results, we have known that the saturated water vapor pressure stress is adequate as the acceleration stress for shortening life test time of LED packages.

  • This paper presents several problems that can occur in the development of the ultra-compact LED package of less than 1.0mm and introduces the solution to them. In the existing mold structure, since the upper and lower core parts are integrated, various errors have occurred due to the roughness of EDM in the small model, which is a limiting factor in further reducing the mold size. As a countermeasure, the prefabricated model was presented in an earlier study to overcome the obstacles to the development of a ultra-compact LED package. In this paper, several problems have been found during the fabrication of prototypes as a starting work to produce the results for the presented model. The types are suggested and the solutions are discussed. And by changing the existing 2-row structure to 3-row structure in the same size lead frame, the aspect of efficient production is considered. The experimental procedure verifies the proposed solution and conducts a test to produce a prototype to confirm that a good product can be produced.

  • This paper introduces the mold technology for the development of ultra-compact package of less than 1mm, and also analyze the error pattern of the results using this mold technology. The existing ultra-small mold structure was one-piece, which caused the surface of EDM to be rough and increase the error rate. This has been an obstacle to further reducing the size of the mold. On the other hand, the proposed mold technology tries to overcome the limitation of the one-piece type by using the prefabricated type method. This paper also classify defect patterns in the results of the proposed mold structure and analyze the occurrence probability of each pattern to use as a basic data to develop a detector.
