The combined estimator of inter- and intra-block estimators in incomplete block designs can be expressed as a weighted average of two location estimators. The weight should be between 0 and 1. However, the negative variance component estimate could result in the weight being negative or larger than 1. In this paper, we show that if two location estimators have symmetric unimodal distributions, truncating the weight to 0 or 1 accordingly improves the combined estimator under an arbitrary convex loss function.
Purpose: Our study sought to investigate differences in plantar foot pressure as a function of type of pack carried and of changing weight during gait and stance. Methods: Subjects were 40 students with no disabilities. Plantar foot pressure was measured with different types of packs carried and with changing weight of the pack during both gait and stance and while changing feet. During stance while carrying a satchel on the shoulder caused a disproportionate change in plantar foot pressure. An even great imbalance occurred for plantar foot pressure during gait. Results: Using a satchel can influence diseases such as scoliosis that are caused by unbalanced muscle activation and by a disproportionate distribution of the weight of the body. Conclusion: Knowing how to use a pack correctly and how to appropriately adjust the weight of bag should be taught.
There are many Industry Code and Standard (ICS) for Structural Integrity Assessment (SIA) on welded structure with defect. The general ICSs, such as R6, BS 7910 and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, provide equations to determine the upper bound residual stress profiles based on collections from many literatures. However, these residual stress profiles used in the SIA cause the conservative design for welded structures. In this study, the structural integrity assessment for girth weld in pipeline has been conducted based on fracture mechanics. In addition, thermo-elastic plastic FE analysis was performed for evaluating the residual stress of girth weld in pipeline. The weight function solution is used to determine the stress intensity factor using the residual stress profile obtained by the FE analysis. This approach can account for redistribution and relaxation of residual stress as the defects grow. In order to the evaluate quantitative comparison between BS 7910 and weight function solution, structural integrity assessment determining allowable crack size on cracked pipe was performed with failure assessment diagram.
Cracks at mechanical fastener holes usually nucleate as elliptical comer cracks at the faying surface of the mechanical joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks. The weight function method for elliptical arc through cracks at mechanical fastener holes has been developed and verified in the part I of this study. In part H, applying the weight function method, the effects of the amount of clearance on the mixed-mode stress intensity (actors are investigated and the change of crack shape is predicted from the analysis for various crack shapes. The stress intensity factors leer inclined crack are analyzed and critical angle at which mode I stress intensity factor becomes maximum is determined.
Let $\mu$ be a positive Borel measure on $R^n$ which is positive on cubes. For any cube $Q \subset R^n$, a Borel measurable nonnegative function $\varphi_Q$, supported and positive a.e. with respect to $\mu$ in Q, is given. We consider a maximal function $$ M_{\mu}f(x) = sup \int \varphi Q$\mid$f$\mid$d_{\mu} $$ where the supremum is taken over all $\varphi Q$ such that $x \in Q$.
It is shown that for a general Haar shift operator, and a weight in the $A_2$ weight class, we establish the weighted norm estimate which linearly depends on $A_2$-characteristic $[w]_{A_2}$. Although the result is now well known, we introduce the new method, which is called the iterated Bellman function method, to provide the estimate.
This paper presents the optimization steps with weight and importance of estimated characteristic values in the multiresponse surface analysis(MRA). The research introduces the shape parameter of individual desirability function for relaxation and tighening of specification bounds. The study also proposes the combinded desirability function using arithmetic, geometric and harmonic means considering the measurement unit and numerical pattern.

Classification is an important research area as data can be easily obtained even if the number of predictors becomes huge. The support vector machine(SVM) is widely used to classify a subject into a predetermined group because it gives sound theoretical background and better performance than other methods in many applications. The SVM can be viewed as a penalized method with the hinge loss function and penalty functions. Instead of $L_2$ penalty function Fan and Li (2001) proposed the smoothly clipped absolute deviation(SCAD) satisfying good statistical properties. Despite the ability of SVMs, they have drawbacks of non-robustness when there are outliers in the data. We develop a robust SVM method using a weight function with the SCAD penalty function based on the local quadratic approximation. We compare the performance of the proposed SVM with the SVM using the $L_1$ and $L_2$ penalty functions.
PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a real-time pressure feedback provided during gait training on the weight weight distribution of the inner part of mid-foot in paralyzed side and gait function in stroke patients. METHODS: A total of 24 patients with hemiplegic stroke in a rehabilitation hospital were randomly assigned to the experimental and control group. All participants (n = 24) performed 15 min of comprehensive rehabilitation therapy 5 times a week for a period of 4 weeks. Additionally, the experimental group and control group underwent gait training with a real time feedback and general gait training, respectively, for 15 min five times a week for 4 weeks. Weight distribution and gait function were measured before and after the 4-week training. RESULTS: Significant increases in the weight distribution (WD), stance time (ST) and step length (SL) of the paralyzed side, and a significant decrease in the 10 m walking test (10 MWT) observed after training in the two groups (p < .05). The experimental group showed larger changes in the all variables than the control group (WD, +10.5 kg vs. +8.8 kg, p < .05; ST, 12.8 s vs. 4.9 s, p < .05; SL, 4.9 cm vs. 1.7 cm, p < .05; 10 MWT, -3.5 s vs. -1.0 s, p < .05, respectively). CONCLUSION: Gait training with a real-time feedback might be effective in improving the normalization of weight bearing of the paralyzed lower extremity and gait function of stroke patients, and be considered to be a more effective gait training for improving the abilities than the general gait training.
The purpose of this study is to select indicators by a methodical approach and to establish a functional assessment system as a basic study for planning and constructing green space of forest. The types of green space were divided into 6 classes based on theoretical reviews of literature and the functions of green space were restricted to 'nature-ecological function', 'environment-control function' and 'usage function'. As a result of the selection of indicators, 35 indicators were initially selected by theoretical review and these indicators were reduced to 29 through brainstorming. Also, these indicators were classified into three functions such as 12 indicators (nature-ecological function), 8 indicators (environment-control function), 6 indicators (usage function) by analysis of suitability. According to the result of selection of the optimum indicators using MCB (Multiple Comparisons with the Best treatment) analysis, the optimum indicators of 7, 5, and 4 respectively by each function were selected for forest green space. The results of AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) for the establishment of the assessment system in forest, the weight of nature-ecological function was evaluated highest at 0.558, while the weight of environment-control and usage function were calculated at each 0.277, 0.165. 'Naturality (0.189)', 'Carbon sink (0.235)', and 'Accessibility (0.354)' among indicators showed highest by each function. The weight of indicator and assessment system may be used as a valuable guideline in case of assessing synthetically green space within urban planning.
