Weak Convergence of U-empirical Processes for Two Sample Case with Applications

  • In this paper, we show the weak convergence of U-empirical processes for two sample problem. We use the result to show the asymptotic normality for the generalized dodges-Lehmann estimates with the Bahadur representation for quantifies of U-empirical distributions. Also we consider the asymptotic normality for the test statistics in a simple way.

Weak Normality and Strong t-closedness of Generalized Power Series Rings

  • For an extension $A\;{\subseteq}\;B$ of commutative rings, we present a sufficient conditio for the ring $[[A^{S,\;\leq}]]$ of generalized power series to be weakly normal (resp., stronglyt-closed) in $[[B^{S,\;\leq}]]$, where (S, $\leq$) be a torsion-free cancellative strictly ordered monoid. As a corollary, it can be applied to the ring of power series in infinitely many indeterminates as well as in finite indeterminates.

  • In [3], [4] and [5], Hochster and Huneke introduced the notions of the tight closure of an ideal and of the weak F-regularity of a ring. This notion enabled us to give new proofs of many results in commutative algebra. A regular ring is known to be F-regular, and a Gorenstein local ring is proved to be F-regular provided that one ideal generated by a system of parameters (briefly s.o.p.) is tightly closed. In fact, a Gorenstein local ring is weakly F-regular if and only if there exists a system of parameters ideal which is tightly closed [3]. But we do not know whether this fact is true or not if a ring is not Gorenstein, in particular, a ring is a Cohen Macaulay (briefly C-M) local ring. In this paper, we will prove this in the case of an 1-dimensional C-M local ring. For this, we study the F-rationality and the normality of the ring. And we will also prove that a C-M local ring is to be Gorenstein under some additional condition about the tight closure.

Testing Whether New Is Better Than Used of Specified Age Using Moments Inequalities

  • The class of “new better than used of a specified age” is a large and practical class of life distributions. Its properties, applicability, and testing was discussed by Hollander, Park and Proschan (1986). Their test, while remaining the yardstick for this class, suffers from weak efficiency and weak power, especially for specified ages below the average age. Thus, it is beneficial to have an alternative testing procedure that would work better for early ages and still work well for later ages. This is exactly the subject of the current note. The test developed here is also simpler than that of Hollander, et. al. (1986).

Constraining the shielded wind scenario in PG 2112+059

  • The physical scenario describing the origin of quasar winds remains largely unsettled due to our failure to account for X-ray weak BAL quasars. We approach this problem by studying the relation between the inner part of the outflow which is likely to be shielding the X-ray emission and thereby helping to drive the UV winds characterised by broad absorption lines (BALs). In particular, we aim to probe the wind-shield connection in the highly X-ray variable BAL quasar PG 2112+059, which has exhibited periods of X-ray weakness and X-ray normality in the past. A set of two 20 ks Chandra observations and two contemporaneous HST observations, separated by at least eight months, combined with a nearly simultaneous archival Chandra-HST observation from 2002, afford us a unique opportunity to study the connection between the shield (which is thought to be responsible for the X-ray absorption) and the ionisation state of the wind (observed as UV BAL features; e.g., C IV and O VI lines) over various timescales.

괴물과 영웅 사이 -판타지 드라마의 초능력 인물 (Between Monster and Hero -Characters with Supernatural Powers of Fantasy Dramas)

  • 본 연구는 한국 판타지 드라마의 여러 모티프 중 초능력을 가진 영웅 인물이 등장하는 드라마(<너의 목소리가 들려>, <당신이 잠든 사이에>, <힘쎈여자 도봉순>)를 대상으로, 이들은 어떤 모습으로 형상화되고 있는지 또한 이들의 탄생은 대중의 어떤 결핍과 욕망에서 비롯되었는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 세 편의 드라마에서 재현된 초능력 인물들의 공통점은 찬사와 존경의 대상이 되는 전형적인 영웅이 아니라 경계와 소외의 상징인 괴물로 재현된다는 것이었다. 세 편의 드라마는 모두 사법부와 검찰, 경찰과 같은 공적 권력의 한계와 부정을 비판하고 있는데, 초능력 인물들은 자신의 초능력을 활용해 이러한 문제를 바로잡고 약자와 피해자들을 돕는 영웅적 면모를 보인다. 동시에 그들은 우리가 불편해하는 이야기를 하고 누군가는 숨기고 싶어 하는 진실을 드러내는가 하면 '정상성'과 '당연의 세계'를 향해 문제를 제기한다. 이런 점 때문에 이들은 괴물로 취급되고 소외된 것이다. 현실의 문제와 욕망을 해결하고자 영웅을 소환했지만 그들로 인해 우리 사회의 결핍과 모순을 확인하게 되는 이러한 모습은 현실의 억압된 욕망을 표출하지만 그러한 욕망을 충족시키기 위해 현실을 비판하고 전복하는 판타지의 속성과 닮아 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 판타지의 전복적인 특징과 함께, 그러한 속성이 텔레비전 드라마라는 매체의 특성과 결합되었을 때의 한계 또한 확인할 수 있었다. 그간 한국 텔레비전 드라마에서는 소원했던 장르이자 최근 활발하게 제작되고 있는 장르인 판타지에 주목했다는 점에서 본 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있으며, 이후 더 세분화되고 다양화된 판타지 드라마를 연구하는데 있어 많은 과제를 제시했다는 점 또한 본 연구의 의의라 할 것이다.
