  • We have proposed a metamaterial lens that enables sub-wavelength focusing, which is shorter than an operating wavelength. Our lens is a two dimensional array of a unit cell consisting of a metallic dual-plate printed on a dielectric substrate. The unique dual-plate structure provides negativeness both in permittivity and permeability, with no help from conventional additional structures, which are normally printed on the opposite of metallic patterns. Therefore, we can focus a source (or an image) in a tiny distance shorter than the free space wavelength (${\lambda}$) at the frequencies of interest. Furthermore, since the proposed geometry does not need separate supplementary structures to acquire negative permittivity or permeability, our lens is much simpler than conventional metamaterial lenses, which is a strong point in practical applications. We have validated sub-wavelength focusing ability in a 6 GHz frequency band through an experiment of near field scanning, which provided the width of about 0.19 ${\lambda}$ at a half maximum of a peak value of an measured image. The width of the focused image through the lens is more than 4 times shorter than that without the lens, which confirms the validity of our design approach.

  • The calibration equations for Brix value determination of intact mango were developed using the NIR spectra in a short wavelength region from 700 to 1100 nm. Multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least square regression (PLS) was used for the calibration. It was found that the best wavelength region for PLS calibration from 900 to 1000 nm was similar to the wavelength region selected by MLR from 906 nm to 996 nm. Both MLR and selected region PLS provided sufficiently accurate prediction equations for Brix determination of intact mango. For MLR, the prediction results were SEP = 0.45 Brix and Bias = -0.04 Brix while PLS prediction results were SEP : 0.46 Brix and Bias = -0.2 Brix. It was concluded that MLR and PLS would have similar abilities in making calibration equation for Brix determination of intact mango if the appropriate wavelengths or wavelength region were selected. The appropriate wavelength region for PLS regression could be assumed by using the wavelength region selected by MLR in place of random selection, The relationship between calibration results of MLR and PLS regression is discussed.

  • The amount of electric power for photovoltaic power generation depends on the location of the power plant and the direction of solar cell. The solar cell controls the generation of solar power plants. Therefore, the structure of solar cell, manufacturing method, and optic technology were factors contributing to increased solar cell efficiency; however, the technical limit has been reached. Herein, we propose a new method to increase the solar cell efficiency using a wavelength conversion technology that converts ultraviolet and infrared rays, which are not effectively used in solar cells, into effective wavelength of solar cell. We used fluoride $Na(Ca)YF_4$ phosphor for wavelength conversion. Then, a wavelength-conversion fluorescent paste, prepared using an organic-silicon binder, was used to prepare a film that was applied to Si solar cells. It was confirmed that conversion efficiency improved by 5% or more.

  • In order to develop a highly sensitive infrared sensor, it is necessary to develop techniques for decreasing the rate of heat absorption and the transition of the absorption wavelength to a longer wavelength, both of which can be induced by decreasing the pixel size of the bolometer. Therefore, in this study, $1{\mu}m$ hole-arrays with a subwavelength smaller than the incident infrared wavelength were formed on the amorphous silicon-based microbolometer pixels in the absorber, which consisted of a TiN absorption layer, an a-Si resistance layer and a SiNx membrane support layer. We demonstrated that it is possible to reduce the thermal time constant by 16% relative to the hole-patternless bolometer, and that it is possible to shift the absorption peak to a shorter wavelength as well as increase absorption in the $4-8{\mu}m$ band to compensate for the infrared long-wavelength transition. These results demonstrate the potential for a new approach to improve the performance of high-resolution microbolometers.

  • A Gigabit Ethernet upstream transmission over a WDM-PON employing remotely wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot lasers has been demonstrated. We have successfully demonstrated a WDM transmission of four Gigabit Ethernet channels with 100 GHz channel spacing over 30 km conventional single mode fiber. The measured f-factor was larger than 17.1 dB. We have also investigated the beating noise characteristics of a wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser and showed the remotely wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser suppresses the intensity noise of the incoherent light injected, which cause a 6.3 dB SNR improvement compared with that of the conventional spectrum-sliced light source.

  • This research focuses on the development of an interrogator that operates and measures fiber Bragg grating(FBG) multiplexing sensor probes for accurate-measurement of the blade deflection in a wind power generator. We designed and fabricated an optical source and spectrum module for the interrogator. Additionally, we verified the wavelength repeatability within 0.001 nm and the wavelength stability within 1 pm of the optical source, and we experimentally determined that the wavelength scanning range was about 44.4 nm. The FBG sensor with 2 nm resolution can be extended to a performance-efficient system that measures more than 20 sensors. The implemented interrogator has 0.141 nm wavelength variations corresponding to an ambient temperature range of $0^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$. The measurement error can be easily reduced by employing a temperature compensation algorithm. In this study, we quantitatively confirmed the accuracy and operating stability of the interrogator.

  • PURPOSES : Recently, attempts have been made to evaluate tire-pavement noise based on a measure of Mean Profile Depth (MPD). However, equivalent values of MPD appear to correspond to different levels of tire-pavement noise, which indicates that other factors such as texture wavelength need to be included to improve the accuracy of noise prediction. A single index to represent texture wavelength is proposed in this study. A consistent relationship between tire-pavement noise and texture wavelength on asphalt concrete pavement is observed. METHODS : Profile data and tire-pavement noise data were collected from a number of expressway sections in Korea. In addition, texture wavelength was defined by a Peak Number (PN), which was calculated using profile data. Statistical analysis was performed to find the relationship between the PN and tire-pavement noise. RESULTS : As a result of this study, a linear relationship between PN and tire-pavement noise is observed on asphalt concrete pavement. CONCLUSIONS : Tire-pavement noise on asphalt concrete pavement can be predicted from PN information.

  • Recently, characteristic research by the changes in the spectrum, one of the factors that influence analysis of maximum output power of PV module, has been studied. In this paper, a one-day intensity of solar irradiation, change of spectrums with time and electrical output for spectrums are analyzed. As a result, blue-rich wavelength compared with red-rich wavelength has large variation of solar irradiance with time. It is recognized that change of solar irradiance is predominately on variation of blue-rich wavelength. Also in same intensity of solar irradiance, electrical output in blue-rich wavelength was 4-8[%] higher compared to in red-rich wavelength.

  • We proposed an integrated wavelength-selective photodetector based on a grating-assisted contradirectional coupler and a graphene absorption layer for a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) communication system. The center wavelength of the absorption spectrum of the proposed device can be tuned simply by changing the period of the grating, and the proposed device structure is suitable to forming a cascaded structure. Therefore, an array of the proposed device of different grating periods can be used for simultaneous wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection in a CWDM communication system. Our theoretical study showed that the designed device with a grating length of $500{\mu}m$ could have an absorption of 95.1%, an insertion loss of 0.2 dB, and a 3 dB bandwidth of 7.5 nm, resulting in a -14 dB crosstalk to adjacent CWDM channels. We believe that the proposed device array can provide a compact and economic solution to receiver implementation in the CWDM system by combining functions of wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection.
