  • Taraxacum coreanum Nakai (TM) has been investigated for its antidiabetic activity in streptozotocin induced diabetic animals, but few studies have been conducted to evaluate its efficacy for treatment of type II diabetic mice. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the water extracts of TM for the treatment of type II diabetes. Twenty four mice(C57BLKS/J Iar $-+Lepr^{db}/+Lepr^{db}$) with type II diabetes were randomly assigned either to a experimental group A (leaves extraction of TM), experimental group B(roots extraction of TM), experimental group C(leaves, roots and flowers extraction of TM) or control group. Water extracts of TM were ingested for 10 weeks. The changes of body weight, level of blood glucose, numerical change of insulin-immunoreactive cells and level of blood insulin were measured after treatment of water extracts of TM. A reduction of the blood glucose level after treatment of TM was observed in all the experimental groups. Especially, experimental C group showed significant reduction of blood glucose level compared with control group. Experimental C group induced an increase the level of blood insulin and density of insulin immunoreactive cells after treatment of TM. These results show that water extracts of TM can improve the severity in type II diabetic mice.

  • As a side effect of recent rapid climate change and global warming, the frequency and scale of flood disasters are increasing worldwide. In Korea, the water level of the Han River is a major management target for preventing flood disasters in Seoul, the capital of Korea. In this paper, to improve the water level prediction of the Han River based on machine learning, we perform a comprehensive assessment of the quality of related dataset and propose data preprocessing methods to improve it. Specifically, we improve the dataset in terms of completeness, validity, and accuracy through missing value processing and cross-correlation analysis. In addition, we conduct a performance evaluation using random forest and LightGBM to analyze the effect of the proposed data improvement method on the water level prediction performance of the Han River.

  • Submerged breakwaters installed under the water surface are a representative coastal structure to prevent coastal erosion, and various types of submerged breakwaters have been proposed and discussed so far. Generally, submerged breakwaters make the complex wave fields due to abrupt change in water depth at the crown of the breakwater. In this study, wave heights and mean water level formed around a breakwater are examined numerically for three-dimensional permeable submerged breakwaters. OLAFOAM, CFD open source code, is applied in the numerical analysis, and the comparisons are made with available experimental results on the permeable upright wall and the impermeable submerged breakwater to verify its applicability to the three-dimensional numerical analysis. Based on the applicability of OLAFOAM numerical code, the wave height and mean water level distribution formed around the permeable submerged breakwaters are investigated under the formation condition of salient. The numerical results show that as the gap width between breakwaters decreases, the wave height in the center of the gap increases, while it decreases behind the gap, and the installing position of the breakwater from the shoreline has little influence on the change of the wave height. Furthermore, it is found that the decrease of the mean water level near the gap between breakwaters increases with decreasing of the gap width.

  • The objective of this study is to suggest an approach for estimating probability rainfall using climate scenario data based GCM and to analyze changes of flood characteristics like probability rainfall, flood quantile and flood water level under climate change. The study area is Namhan river basin. Probability rainfalls which is taken 1440 minutes duration and 100-year frequency are estimated by using IPCC SRES A2 climate change scenario for each time period (S0: 1971~2000; S1: 2011~2040; S2: 2041~2070; S3: 2071~2100). Flood quantiles are estimated for 17 subbasins and flood water level is analyzed in the main channel from the downstream of Chungju dam to the upstream of Paldang dam. Probability rainfalls, peak flow from flood quantile and water depth from flood water level have increase rate in the range of 13.0~15.1 % based S0 (142.1 mm), 29.1~33.5% based S0 ($20,708\;m^3/s$), 12.6~13.6% in each S1, S2 and S3 period, respectively.

  • This experiment was performed to characterize the optimum water table level for the grain quality, seed germination and diastic power of barley(var. Olbori) and wheat(var. Grumil). Olbori and Grumil grew in the 550 liter plastic pot that filled with silt loam or sandy loam. During the whole growth period, the underground water level adjusted to be 20, 30, 40, 50 and 70cm. Filled grain ratio and specific gravity were not affected by soil texture and water table. Low level of water table caused the increase of 1,000 grain weight in wheat and barley, but soil texture didn't. Crude protein content tended to be high as the water table level was high, especially in wheat. Change in crude protein content was affected by underground water level more than soil texture. And the affection was slightly higher in sandy loam than silt loam, but the difference was small. The higher level of water table led to the lower crude lipid content in barley and wheat grain. Crude lipid content of both wheat and barley grain grown in sandy loam was higher than those grown in silt loam. As the water table level down, the ash content of barley and wheat grain tend to increase, especially in sandy loam. Wheat flour yield was not affected by soil texture. It was about 65% at 20cm of water level and above 67% at 40cm water level. The seed germination of wheat and barley was more than 95% when the seeds were placed at 2$0^{\circ}C$ for three days. Regardless of soil texture, the lowest germination was seen at 20cm of water table level. And the seed germination rate increased as the underground water level became low. Above 89% of barley grains were germinated within 48 hours except 20cm level of water table in sandy loam. Diastic power of germinated barley was the lowest at 20cm of water table level, and it was almost unchanged below 30cm of water table level. And also it was not affected by soil texture.

  • Change in atmospheric pressure produce sizable fluctuafions in wells penetrafing confined aquifers. The relationship is inverse; that is, increases in atmospheric pressure produce decreases in water levels, and conversely. When atmospheric pressure changes are expressed in terms of a column of water, the raflo of water level change to pressure change expresses the barometric efficiency of an aquifer. In the study area, aquifers are developed in the fractures, joints, bedding planes and occasionally in solufion cavities of marl interbeds. The barometric efficiency of the aquifer varies from 8 to 90%, indicating that Confined, Unconfined and Semi-Confined condifions exist locally. The barometric efficiency is characteristic of the aquifer itself and observed in the field is inversely proportional to specific storage or the storage coefficient. It is remalned in question to derive the relationship between B.E. and S.

  • In Korea, the rainfall is concentrated in summer under the influence of monsoon climate. Thus, even a small climate change can be significant problems in water resources. As a result, a lot of attention has been focused on climate changes and a number of researches have been conducted in a manner commensurate with the attention to the climate change. This study is intended to forecast the changes in the flow and water quality of the Nam river resulting from the future climate changes in the Nam river basin using a watershed and water quality model. An SWAT model, as a watershed hydrologic model, was established after estimating a climate scenario using an artificial neural network method, and the established model was verified and adjusted using date from the Ministry of Environment to evaluate the applicability of the model. As a consequence, $R^2$ showed more than 0.7 in the simulation test, which satisfies the minimum required level. Results from the SWAT model and the future Namgang dam discharge calculated by HEC-ResSIM is used as input date for QUALKO. The results showed a huge variation in BOD depending on the annual flow of the river, which recorded a maximum difference of 2 mg/L between a rainy season and a dry season. It can be deduced that because rainfall and the runoff of a basin significantly account for the water quality of a river, higher water concentrations are recorded in a dry season in which the flow is not as much as that in a rainy season. It also can be said that water should be reserved in advance to secure water in the Nam river downstream for a dry season and be controlled in an effective and efficient manner to provide better water quality.

  • In this study a process simulation method was used to analyze the accumulation phenomena of anionic starch in the process white water as the closure level of a fine paper making process is increased. A pilot paper machine was used as a model process. Dynamic simulations of the influence of white water usage ratio and uncoated broke addition ratio on the variation of process variable was monitored as a function of time. Results from the dynamic simulations showed that the volume of reservoirs affected the dynamic behavior of the process. The dynamic behavior of flow rate and dissolved starch concentration in process units were different from each other. The speed of the change of dissolved starch concentration in process units was depend on the starting point of the change of dissolved starch concentration, the length of circulation loop, and the volume of reservoirs.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the change characteristics of stream water quality by land-use of forest from July to September, 2000 in three stands(Pinus densiflora, Castanea crenata (I), Castanea crenata (II) stand) of Jeongpyeong-ri, Jinju-si, Gyeongnam. The mean pH of rainfall results in acid rain of 5.3. The pH of stream water in three stands was high in order of Pinus densiflora (pH 6.59), Castanea crenata (II)(pH 6.53) and Castanea crenata (I) stand(pH 6.47). The electrical conductivity of stream water was high in order of Castanea crenata (I), Pinus densiflora and Castanea crenata (II) stand. Cations contents of three stands in stream water were high in order of $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and ${NH_4}^+$. But anions of stream water in Pinus densiflora stand and Castanea crenata (II) stand were high in order of ${SO_4}^{2-}$, $Cl^-$ and ${NO_3}^-$. In Castanea crenata (I) stand cations of stream water were high in order of ${NO_3}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and $Cl^-$. The level of pH, ${NH_4}^+$, ${NO_3}^-$, $Cl^-$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ of stream water in Pinus densiflora stand and Castanea crenata (II) stand reached within the level of domestic use standard for drinking water But the level of ${NO_3}^-$ of stream water in Castanea crenata (I) stand was higher than that of domestic use standard. Therefore, non-point sources like forest watersheds which are fertilizer application lands should be taken to the appropriate mitigation measures.

  • In this study, we developed a method to determine the flood-limited water levels of agricultural reservoirs, considering both their irrigation and flood control functions. Irrigation safety and flood safety indices were defined to be applied to various reservoirs, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the irrigation and flood control properties. Seasonal flood-limited water level scenarios were established to represent the temporal characteristics of rainfall and agricultural water supply and the safety indices were analyzed according to these scenarios. The optimal scenarios were derived using a schematic solution based on Pareto front analysis. The method was applied to Obong, Yedang, and Myogok reservoirs, and the results showed that the characteristics of each reservoir were well represented in the safety indices. The irrigation safety of Obong reservoir was found to be significantly influenced by the late-stage flood-limited water level, while those of Yedang and Myogok reservoir were primarily affected by the early and mid-stage flood-limited water levels. The values of irrigation safety and flood safety indices for each scenario were plotted as points on the coordinate plane, and the optimal flood-limited water levels were selected from the Pareto front. The storage ratio of the optimal flood-limited water levels for the early, mid, and late stages were 65-70%, 70%, and 75% for Obong reservoir, 75%, 70-75%, and 65-70% for Yedang reservoir, and 75-80%, 70%, and 50% for Myogok reservoir. We expect that the method developed in this study will facilitate efficient reservoir operations.
