  • Studies comparing the relative effects of water soluble extract of Ganoderma lucidum kale juice and sodium dextrothyroxine on lipid component in liver brain and testis of hypercholeste-rolemic rats for 4 weeks. Therefore the aim of this work was to investigate for prevention in cardiovascular disease, Total cholesterol concentration in liver were significantly lower kale juice and sodium dextrothyroxine(1.25mg/kg diet) fed groups than the other groups and trigly-ceride concentration was significantly lower Ganodrma lucidum fed group than in control group;. Total cholesterol concentration in testis were lower other groups than in control group and triglyceride concentration were significantly lower cholesterol Ganoderma lucidum and kale juice groups in control group. Phospholipid concentration in testis was higher sodium dextroth-yroxine fed group thanin control group.

  • By the 505 chromotest which utilized Escherichia bolt PQ 37, Korean medicinal plants had been screened to Investigate the antimutagenic effect to aflatoxin B1(AFBl). Ikmocho(IMC, Leonurus sibiricus L.) was extracted with hot water. The extract was not found to be mutagenic in the Salmonella mutation test with or without metabolic activation, and the extract was showed to possess the antimutagenic properties towards AFB1-induced metation. The mutagenicity of AFB1 was inhibited by methanol soluble fracstion (IMC-MS) in dose-dependent. However, water-soluble fraction exhibited comutagenic activity. The greatest inhibitory effect of IMC-MS on AFB1 mutagenicity occurred when IMC-MS was first incubated, AFB1 followed by a second incubation with the cells and 59 mixture. Also lower inhibition was occurred when S9 mixtures were first incubated, with IMC-MS followed by a second incubation with AFBI. The results of the sequential incubation study support the probability that one mechanism of inhibition could involve the formation of chemical complex between IMC-MS and AFB1 rather than deactivation of S9 enzyme.

  • The O/W and W/O emulsions containing Scutellariae Radix extract(SRE) which is very slightly soluble in oil phases and sparingly soluble in water phases, were prepared by homogenizing water and oil phases with emulsifier. The diameters of emulsion were ranged from 100 to $300\;{\mu}m$. The viscosity of W/O emulsion was higher than that of O/W emulsion. W/O emulsion was more stable than O/W emulsion which was gradually degraded when tested by centrifuge method and temperature tolerance method at $50^{\circ}C$. The antibacterial activity of two emulsions was not significantly different from that of aqueous solution of SRE, and showed similar MIC and bacterial growth inhibition rate.

  • The leaves of prunus padus L. var. Seoulensis Nakai distributed widely in Korea, were extracted with boiling alcohol(95%) after being mixed with calcium carbonate. The aqueous solution distilled off alcohol from the above filtered extract under the reduced pressure was evaporated to the dryness. The residue was extracted with acetic ether on the water-bath and the acetic ether solution extract was allowed to stand for a weck after removing out of acetic ether almostly, then a colorless necdles were Crystalized out which has the following characteristics : $C_{14}$ $H_{17}$ $O_{6}$ N, began to melt at 138-139.deg. bitter taste [.alpha.]$_$ $D^{20}$ ]=-26.99.deg. soluble in water, alcohol acetone acetic ether etc. slightly soluble in chloroform. It was proved to be identical with prunasine due to above characteristics and determination of Benzal-dehyde HCN and glucose respectively which was obtained on hydrolysis of this glycoside with emulsine.

Technical Functional Properties of Water- and Salt-soluble Proteins Extracted from Edible Insects

  • The amino acid composition, protein quality, and protein functionality of protein solution extracted from three edible insect species were investigated. We used 0.02% ascorbic acid and 0.58 M saline solution to extract water-soluble and salt-soluble proteins from the three insect species. Extracted protein solutions of Tenebrio molitor (TM), Allomyrina dichotoma (AD), and Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (PB) were divided into six groups, according to species and solubility: WTM, WAD, WPB (water-soluble), and STM, SAD, and SPB (salt-soluble). Defatted TM had the highest protein content, but its protein solubility was the lowest, for both water and saline solutions. Amino acid composition differed by edible insect species and buffer type; SPB had the highest protein quality, followed by WPB. PB had a higher pH than the other species. Color values also differed among species. SPB had abundant high molecular weight proteins, compared with other treatments; and also had the highest foaming capacity, foam stability, and emulsifying capacity. In conclusion, PB is a good source of functional protein compared with the other studied species. Additionally, protein extraction using saline solution is promising as a useful method for improving edible insect protein functionality.

고량강 추출물의 암세포증식 저해 효과 (Anti-proliferative Effect of the Rhizome Extract of Alpinia officinarum on Cultured Human Tumor Cell Lines)

  • The methanol (MeOH) extract of the rhizome of Alpinia officinarum Hance (Zingiberaceae) demonstrated a potent inhibition on the proliferation of cultured human tumor cell lines such as MES-SA (human uterine carcinoma cell line), MESSA/DX5 (multidrug resistant subline of MES-SA), HCT-15 (human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line), HCT15/CL02 (multidrug resistant subline of HCT15). The MeOH extract was fractionated into four portions by serial solvent partition, ie., methylene chloride (CH2Cl2) soluble part, ethylacetate (EtOAc) soluble part, n-butanol (BuOH) soluble part and remaining water layer. Among them, the $CH_2Cl_2$ soluble part of the extract exhibited a most potent inhibition on the proliferation of tested tumor cell lines. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the $CH_2Cl_2$ soluble part led to the isolation of five diarylheptanoid and two flavonoid constituents, i. e., galangin (1), 7-(4"-hydroxy-3"-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenylhept-4-en-3-one (2), 1,7-diphenyl-5-hydroxy-3-heptanone (3), trans,trans-1-(3'-methoxy-4'-hydroxyphenyl)-7-phenyl-5-ol-4,6-dien-3-heptanone (4), 5-methoxy-7-(4"-hydroxy-3"-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenyl-3-heptanone (5), kaempferide (6), 5-hydroxy-7-(4"-hydroxy-3"-methoxyphenyl)-1-phenyl-3-heptanone (7). Structures of the isolated active components (1 - 7) were established by chemical and spectroscopic means.

Properties of Water-Soluble Propolis Made with Honey

  • Propolis is made by bees collecting protective material or essence of plants and mixing with saliva and enzymes produced by the salivary glands. It is used to repair the inside of the honeycomb, keep it sterile, and adjust the temperature and humidity. Propolis is a natural antibiotic substance that it is used to make a clean room by coating the cell before the queen bee lay eggs, and preventing the bacteria from invading by using with wax when sealing the nursery room. Propolis extract is a health functional food with antioxidant and oral antimicrobial effects. In order to use propolis in food, its active ingredients are extracted with ethanol. Water-soluble propolis was prepared by mixing and stirring honey and ethanol extracted propolis (EEP) solution. When 1kg of honey and 100ml of ethanol extracted propolis solution were mixed and stirred, the total flavonoid content of water-soluble propolis was $6.6{\pm}1.1mg/10g$, and the free radical scavenging effects of water-soluble propolis were 54 to 74%.

폐렴(肺炎) 유발균(誘發菌)의 생육(生育)을 억제(抑制)하는 한약재(韓藥材) 탐색(探索)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (A Study on Screeining of Antibacterial Oriental Medicines Against Pulmonary Disease-causing Bacteria)

  • 한약재(韓藥材) 중 폐렴(肺炎)의 치료효과가 기대되는 청열화담(淸熱化痰), 지해평천약(止咳平喘藥)을 중심으로 23종(種)의 약재(藥材)를 사용하여 폐렴(肺炎)을 유발하는 K.pnemoniae, S. pyogenes 및 S. pneumoniae 세균의 생육을 억제하는 약재(藥材)를 탐색하고, 탐색된 약재(藥材)의 추출물에 대한 세균의 최소생육억제농도(最小生育抑制濃度)를 측정하였다. 한약재(韓藥材)의 수용성(水溶性) 추출물 중 황련(黃連), 호황련(胡黃蓮), 패장(敗醬), 황금(黃芩)이 K. pneumoniae에서, 황련(黃連)이 S. pyogenes에 대해서 생육억제 효과가 있었으며, S. pneumoniae에 대한 비교저지환(比較沮止環)의 직경(直徑)은 황련(黃連), 오매(烏梅), 오미자(五味子), 황금(黃芩)쪽이 우수하였으나 황련(黃連) 추출물 사용시 병원균 모두에서 생육저지환(生育沮止環)의 크기가 가장 크게 나타났으며 대조군(對照群)으로 사용된 대장균(大腸菌)과 고초균(枯草菌)에서도 어느 정도의 항세균(抗細菌) 효과를 볼 수 있었다. 에탄올 추출물에서는 패장(敗醬), 황금(黃芩), 오미자(五味子), 오매(烏梅)가 K. pneumoniae 세균의 생육을 억제하였으며. S. pyogenes 세균은 황련(黃連), 황금(黃芩), S. pneumoniae 세균은 황련(黃連), 오미자(五味子), 오해(烏海), 마두령(馬兜鈴), 황금(黃芩)에 의하여 생육이 억제되어 황련(黃連)은 수용성(水溶性) 및 에탄올 용해성(溶解性) 추출물에서 모두 우수한 항세균(抗細菌) 효과를 보여주고 있다. 각 세균에 대한 최소생육저지농도(最小生育沮止濃度)(MIC)는 K. pneumoniae 세균일 경우 황련(黃連) 및 황금(黃芩)의 수용성(水溶性) 추출물과 오매(烏梅) 및 패장(敗醬)의 에탄올 용해성(溶解性) 추출물이 유의성을 보였으며, S. pyogenes 세균은 황련(黃連)의 수용성(受容性) 및 에탄올 용해성(溶解性) 추출물과 오매(烏梅)의 에탄올 용해성(溶解性) 추출물, S. pneumoniae 세균은 황련(黃連)과 오매(烏梅)의 수용성(水溶性) 및 에탄올 용해성(溶解性) 추출물에서 유의성이 나타났다. 이상의 결과를 통하여 황련(黃連), 오미자(五味子), 오매(烏梅), 황금(黃芩), 호황련(胡黃連), 패장(敗醬)의 수용성(水溶性) 및 에탄올 용해성(溶解性) 추출물이 폐렴(肺炎) 유발균(誘發菌) K. pneumoniae, S. pyogenes. S.pneumoniae에 대(對)하여 우수한 생육억제(生育抑制) 작용(作用)을 나타냄을 알 수 있었다.

수삼추출물 및 Glucose 또는 Arginine첨가 추출물의 특성과 항산화작용에 대하여 (The Characteristics and Antioxidant Activity of Non-enzymatic Browsing Products from Fresh Ginseng Bxtracts and Those with Arginine or Glucose)

  • Color is one of the most important quality factors of red ginseng (Hong-sam) which is processed from fresh ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer). Therefore, a study of characteristics of browning mixtures of aqueous fresh ginseng extracts, factors which accelerate the browning of the aqueous extracts, and the antioxidant activity of the browning mixtures may contribute to the improvement of the color and other quality of red ginseng and other ginseng products such as ginseng extracts. In the present study, factors which affect the Maillard-type browning reaction of aqueous extracts of fresh ginseng roots were investigated firstly by adding various concentrations (0.001-0.5M) of arginine or glucose solutions, by varying the browning reaction temperatures and durations. Secondly, some characteristics such as brown color intensity, amounts of water-soluble and ether-soluble extracts, amounts of non-dialyzable materials, pH, viscosity, and reactivity with 2,2'- diphenyl -1 - picrylhydrazyl and antioxidant activity of the browning mixtures of the aqueous fresh ginseng extracts with small amounts of 0.1 M arginine, 0.1 M glucose, and distilled water at various browning temperatures and reaction time were studied. The results of the present study are as follows. 1. Color intensity (absorbance at 470 nm) of the browning mixtures was increased by adding various concentrations of arginine solution to the fresh ginseng extract, but the addition of the same amount of glucose solution did not increase the color intensity. 2 The amounts of water- or ether-soluble extracts, amounts of non-dialyzable materials were slightly greater in case of the browning mixtures of the fresh ginseng extract with 0.1M arginine solution than in case of the browning mixtures of the fresh ginseng extract with the same amount of 0.1 M glucose solution. In the process of the browning reaction, the pH of the browning mixtures of the fresh ginseng extract with 0.1 M arginine solution decreased slightly, while that of the browning mixtures with 0. 1 M glucose solution was almost constant. 3. The color intensity (absorbance at 470 nm) of the browning mixtures of the fresh ginseng extract with 0.1 M arginine or 0.1 M glucose solutions did not correlate well with the reducing power or the antioxidant power of the browning mixtures. The antioxidant activity of 90% ethanol extracts from the earlier stages of the browning mixtures of the fresh ginseng extract with the arginine solution was almost comparable to that of the 90% ethanol extracts from the later stages of the corresponding browning mixtures. The browning mixtures of only the fresh ginseng extract or of the fresh ginseng extract with the glucose solution showed considerable antioxidant activity, although both showed less brown color intensity than the fresh ginseng extract with he arginine solution.

맥문동 열수 추출물의 일반성분과 관능평가 (General Components and Sensory Evaluation of Hot Water Extract from Liriopis Tuber)

  • This study was conducted to analyze the general components and to investigate sensory evaluation of hot water extract prepared by boiling at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr with 4-fold water. The contents of total soluble soild, non-reducing sugar, total saponin, ash and total protein were 15.95%, 6.54%, 1.735, 0.33% and 0.40%, respectively. The contents of succinic, malic and acetic acid in the extracts were 111.48 mg%, 23.67mg% and 18.36mg%, respectively. The major free amino acids and minerlas of the extract were hydroxyproline 1,290.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$%, glutamic acid 456.2$\mu\textrm{g}$% and potassium 151.35 mg%, respectively. Bitter taste in the extract was not observed, whereas sweet, sour and astringent taste were observed.
