  • In this study, dilution discharge method to measure streamflow using water quality data at small streams during low flow season was applied and compared with the conventional method using flowmeter combined with cross-sectional measurement. Streamflow were measured using both methods in Dal-cheon around Naesok Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Boeun, Chugbuk. This stream is reported to suffer from excessive algal growth in spring. An average flowrate difference of $0.004m^3/sec$ was obtained between the two methods. Once further tested for various conditions, the simple water quality method suggested in this study can be used effectively to estimate stream flowrates during low flow seasons where no measuring facilities such as weirs and flowmeters are not available or water depths are too small to measure flow velocities and exact cross-sections.

  • This study is concerned with the graft polymerization of acrylamide onto the surfaces of polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate films treated with on corona discharge. In the case, peroxides formed by the corona discharge treatment are likely to be the species responsible for initiating the graft polymerization. This treatment produced a continuous charge in wettability and also amid group density on the polymer surface, as evidenced by water contact angle measurement, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflectance mode, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. Both of the merely corona-treated film and the subsequently grafted film are discussed as a function of time after treatment and water washings.

  • Streamflow discharge as a fundamental riverine quantity plays a crucial role in water resources management, thereby requiring accurate in-situ measurement. Recent advances in instrumentations for the streamflow discharge measurement has complemented or substituted classical devices and methods. Among various potential methods, surface current meter using microwave has increasingly begun to be applied not only for flood but also normal flow discharge measurement, remotely and safely enabling practitioners to measure flow velocity postulating indirect contact. With minimized field preparedness, this method facilitated and eased flood discharge measurement in the difficult in-situ conditions such as extreme flood in active ways emitting 24.125 GHz microwave without relying on natural lights. In South Korea, a rectangular shaped instrument named with Microwave Water Surface Current Meter (MWSCM) has been developed and commercially released around 2010, in which domestic agencies charging on streamflow observation shed lights on this approach regarding it as a potential substitute. Considering this brand-new device highlighted for efficient flow measurement, however, there has been few noticeable efforts in systematic and comprehensive evaluation of its performance in various measurement and riverine conditions that lead to lack in imminent and widely spreading usages in practices. This study attempted to evaluate the MWSCM in terms of instrumen's monitoring configuration particularly regarding tilt and yaw angle. In the middle of pointing the measurement spot in a given cross-section, the observation campaign inevitably poses accuracy issues related with different tilt and yaw angles of the instrument, which can be a conventionally major source of errors for this type of instrument. Focusing on the perspective of instrument configuration, the instrument was tested in a controlled outdoor river channel located in KICT River Experiment Center with a fixed flow condition of around 1 m/s flow speed with steady flow supply, 6 m of channel width, and less than 1 m of shallow flow depth, where the detailed velocity measurements with SonTek micro-ADV was used for validation. As results, less than 15 degree in tilting angle generated much higher deviation, and higher yawing angle proportionally increased coefficient of variance. Yaw angles affected accuracy in terms of measurement area.

  • In this study, flow-sediment discharge characteristics and relationships are estimated for the Cheonggyecheon basin, newly restored in 2005. Flow and sediment discharge measurement is performed on Ogansugyo, Majanggyo 2 and Yongdugyo during the rainy seasons in 2005-2006. The parameters of Clark UH are estimated using measured data, and sediment rating curves are derived by using grading and concentration analysis. Concentration time and storage coefficient of Clark UH are estimated 0.5 hr and 0.63 hr for Majanggyo 2, and 0.4 hr and 0.45 hr for Yongdugyo, respectively. Grain size of sediments are composed of fine silt to fine sand (0.008-0.25mm) based on the sediment grain size classification (Lane, 1947). Flow-sediment relationships derived by using concentration analysis shows that sediment discharge has no obvious relationship with flow discharge.

  • Surface Image Velocity (SIV) is a technique which measures the surface velocity of river by using the principle of Paticle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The technique is economical and efficient way to measure velocity in rivers. The present paper aims to apply the technique to three rivers in Korea. It uses pairs of river surface images taken with two digital-cameras and reference points and cross section data which were acquired through plane survey. The performance of SIV was verified with automatic cart on an experimental flume. The test revealed that average error was less than 10 %, which assures that SIV can be used to measure velocity accurately. When it was applied to rivers with low water levels or rough weather condition, however, it showed the error about 20 %. If the problems of SIV technique are settled down, it can be one of the most convenient and economical ways to measure water discharge anytime and anywhere. And then it would be helpful to river management as developing a real-time river information system.

  • In this study, the influences of pollutant from Dae-po Stream and So-gam Stream located at the downstream of Nak-dong River on the water quality at Mul-geum water intake station were analyzed using RAMS model. Field measurements of velocity by ADCP, and water quality distribution of BOD and TP by water sampling were carried out to present the input and verification data for numerical simulations. The comparison between RAM2 and ADCP measurement, which aimed for the analysis of 2-D velocity distribution around Mul-geum water intake station showed that two results matched well along the spanwise direction. The prediction of pollutant concentration by RAM4 agreed fairly well with the measured data except for the points nearby right banks in the vicinity of tributary pollutant source. Flushing effect by the increase of mainstream discharge in Nak-dong River was analyzed to provide the damage mitigation in preparation for the accidental water pollution. With increasing mainstream discharge, high velocity and increased water quantity induced increasing dilution effect, thereby decreasing the inflow pollutant concentration rapidly.

  • Continuous and accurate instrument of river water usage is needed for sustainable river water management. Although the instrument methods applicable to each point of use of river water are different, more precise direct instrument methods are required at the point of major open channel. Users of river water should select appropriate direct instrument methods to measure usage, but there is a lack of standards and verification research. In this study, the H-Q rating curve method, ultrasonic method, and microwave method were applied directly to the test basin in the upper basin of Mangyeong river, and the accuracy of measurement data was evaluated by comparing absolute error between discharge data calculated by instrument method. When comparing the calculated discharge of point units, the ultrasonic method showed the best results of the actual measurement. Through continuous instrument, the sum of the daily and monthly units was compared, and the ultrasonic and microwave methods were shown to be highly accurate. Based on the results of this study, it is hoped that the appropriate direct measurement method can be selected according to the importance of the river water use facility, considering that the ultrasonic method and the microwave method are relatively costly compared to the water level-flow relationship method.

  • Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers(ADCPs) have capability to concurrently capitalize three-dimensional velocity vector and bathymetry with highly efficient and rapid manner, and thereby enabling ADCPs to document the hydrodynamic and morphologic data in very high spatial and temporal resolution better than other contemporary instruments. However, ADCPs are also limited in terms of the inevitable unmeasured regions near bottom, surface, and edges of a given cross-section. The velocity in those unmeasured regions are usually extrapolated or assumed for calculating flow discharge, which definitely affects the accuracy in the discharge assessment. This study aimed at scrutinizing a conventional extrapolation method(i.e., the 1/6 power law) for estimating the unmeasured regions to figure out the accuracy in ADCP discharge measurements. For the comparative analysis, we collected spatially dense velocity data using ADV as well as stationary ADCP in a real-scale straight river channel, and applied the 1/6 power law for testing its applicability in conjunction with the logarithmic law which is another representative velocity law. As results, the logarithmic law fitted better with actual velocity measurement than the 1/6 power law. In particular, the 1/6 power law showed a tendency to underestimate the velocity in the near surface region and overestimate in the near bottom region. This finding indicated that the 1/6 power law could be unsatisfactory to follow actual flow regime, thus that resulted discharge estimates in both unmeasured top and bottom region can give rise to discharge bias. Therefore, the logarithmic law should be considered as an alternative especially for the stationary ADCP discharge measurement. In addition, it was found that ADCP should be operated in at least more than 0.6 m of water depth in the left and right edges for better estimate edge discharges. In the future, similar comparative analysis might be required for the moving boat ADCP discharge measurement method, which has been more widely used in the field.

  • Advances in measurement techniques have reduced measurement costs and enhanced safety resulting in less uncertainty. For example, an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) based suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measurement technique is being accepted as an alternative to the conventional data collection method. In Korean rivers, horizontal ADCPs (H-ADCPs) are mounted on the automatic discharge monitoring stations, where SSC can be measured using the backscatter of ADCPs. However, automatic discharge monitoring stations and sediment monitoring stations do not always coincide which hinders the application of the new techniques that are not feasible to some stations. This work presents and analyzes H-ADCP-SSC models for 9 discharge monitoring stations in Korean rivers. In application of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to sediment-related variables (catchment area, particle size distributions of suspended sediment and bed material, water discharge-sediment discharge curves) from 44 sediment monitoring stations, it is revealed that those characteristics can distinguish sediment monitoring stations regionally. Linking the two results, we propose a protocol determining the H-ADCP-SSC model where no H-ADCP-SSC model is available.
