The Efficacy of Zoom Technology as an Educational Tool for English Reading Comprehension Achievement in EFL Classroom

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of real-time remote video instruction using zoom on learners' English reading achievement. The study also sought to identify the efficiency of zoom video lectures and consider supplementing them by surveying learners' opinions and satisfaction regarding zoom video lectures. To this end, control and experimental groups were set up, and two achievement tests and a questionnaire were conducted. The study's results demonstrated that zoom video lectures have a positive effect on learners' English reading achievement. The questionnaire found that learners are satisfied with zoom video lectures for the following reasons: 'increased interest in and motivation towards learning', 'self-directed learning', 'active interaction', 'ease of access', 'ease of information retrieval'. At the same time, the questionnaire also found that some learners are dissatisfied with zoom video lectures due to 'mechanical errors or defects', 'poor audio quality', and 'the need to add customized functions for efficient classes'. In practice, zoom video lectures must be supplemented with automatic attendance processing, convenient data upload and download, and more efficient video screen management. Given the recent increase in online classes, we, as instructors, must develop teaching activities and/or strategies for video lectures that can encourage active participation by learners.

A Suggestion on Using Animated Movie as Learning Materials for University Liberal Arts English Classes

  • This study's purpose is to suggest a pedagogical method based on using animated movie in liberal arts English classes and to examine the direction that using animated movie as learning material should take. To this end, in this study, the content understanding and expression concentration stages using animated movie are presented. After students learned in class through animated movie, two tests were conducted to investigate the change in learners' acquisition of English expressions. As a result, subjects' learning of English expressions showed a significant improvement over time. An open-ended questionnaire was also conducted to ascertain learners' satisfaction level and their perceptions of classes using animated movie, with learners' satisfaction found to be high overall (77.1%). Students identified the reasons for their high satisfaction rate as the following: "fun and a touching story", "beneficial composition of textbooks", "efficient teaching methods", "sympathetic topics", and "appropriate difficulty". When using video media in class, instructors should maximize and leverage the advantages of video media, which are rich both in context and in their linguistic aspects.

코로나-19 팬데믹으로 인한 체육계열 대학생의 원격수업 학습경험 탐색 (Exploring the Online Learning Experience of College Students Majoring Physical Education in the COVID-19 Pandemic)

  • 이 연구는 코로나-19로 인한 대학 내 원격수업에 따른 체육계열 대학생의 교육경험과 인식을 확인하고자 수행되었다. 이러한 연구목적을 위해 체육계열 대학생 278명에게 온라인을 통해 원격수업 현황, 원격수업인식(선호도, 만족도)을 조사하였다. 분석방법으로는 SPSS 22.0과 R프로그램을 활용하여 빈도분석, 대응표본 t검증, ANOVA, 워드 클라우드 분석을 적용하였다. 상기한 연구과정을 통해 도출된 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 코로나-19로 인한 체육계열 원격수업 유형에서는 이론 및 실기수업 모두 동영상형이 가장 많이 활용되었다. 둘째, 원격수업 유형의 선호도에서는 이론 및 실기수업 모두 동영상형이 가장 높게 나타났으며, 다음은 강의장면 촬영형, 음성강의형 순으로 나타났다. 셋째, 체육계열 대학생들의 원격수업에 있어 이론수업과 실기수업에 대한 만족도 차이를 분석한 결과 수업유형에 따른 만족도 차이는 없었다. 서술형 응답을 통해 과제의 적절한 활용 여부는 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인임을 확인하였다. 결과를 반영하여 체육계열 원격수업의 방향과 향후 연구 문제를 제안하였다.

TsCNNs-Based Inappropriate Image and Video Detection System for a Social Network

  • We propose a detection algorithm based on tree-structured convolutional neural networks (TsCNNs) that finds pornography, propaganda, or other inappropriate content on a social media network. The algorithm sequentially applies the typical convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm in a tree-like structure to minimize classification errors in similar classes, and thus improves accuracy. We implemented the detection system and conducted experiments on a data set comprised of 6 ordinary classes and 11 inappropriate classes collected from the Korean military social network. Each model of the proposed algorithm was trained, and the performance was then evaluated according to the images and videos identified. Experimental results with 20,005 new images showed that the overall accuracy in image identification achieved a high-performance level of 99.51%, and the effectiveness of the algorithm reduced identification errors by the typical CNN algorithm by 64.87 %. By reducing false alarms in video identification from the domain, the TsCNNs achieved optimal performance of 98.11% when using 10 minutes frame-sampling intervals. This indicates that classification through proper sampling contributes to the reduction of computational burden and false alarms.

  • Weakly-supervised learning is a widely adopted approach in video anomaly detection whereby only video labels are utilized instead of expensive frame-level annotations. Since the success of multi-instance learning (MIL), almost all recent approaches are based on maximizing the margin between the set of abnormal video snippets and those of normal video snippets. In this work, we present a simple contrastive approach for weakly supervised video anomaly detection (WS-VAD) with aims to enhance the performance of existing models. The method is generic in nature and introduces a loss function to encourage attraction of output features from the same video class and repel those from different video classes. Experimental results demonstrate our method can be applied to existing algorithms to improve detection accuracy in public video anomaly dataset.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of residential interior design according to social classes in Korean television dramas. To achieve the study purpose content analysis through slides and video tapes was used. Eighty three houses out of twenty eight dramas from 1990 to 1996 were classified into three classes ; upper class middle-upper class middle-lower class. Those houses were analyzed based one the five review points : total interior images finishing materials window treatments furniture and accessories. The results of the study were as follows ; (1) In the general characteristics of the house in Korean television dramas there were distinct differences in age job of householders and house types by classes. (2) In the characteristics of living-room interior design in the television dramas there were distinct differences according to social classes in interior images floor coverings furniture styles and accessories. (3) In the characteristics of master bedroom in the television dramas there were a little differences according to classes. Game-type as Metaverse System for Problem Based Learning Classes

  • After COVID-19, various metaverse platforms for online lectures are being provided. Most of the classrooms are tiered type, and they are divided into intensive classrooms and open classrooms depending on the shape of the classrooms. Intensive classrooms provide a one-sided lecture format, so there are many difficulties in conducting communication-based classes that carry out team missions like PBL classes. In this study, we propose a metaverse classroom that applies the functions of a multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), one of the game genres suitable for PBL classes. The proposed system provides various interaction techniques for PBL classes. We evaluated user satisfaction when this was applied to actual classes. As a result of the evaluation, it was found that users preferred text and voice chatting more than video chatting and solving missions like games was very helpful in online classes.

실시간 화상 수업 환경에서 소프트웨어 실습 교육에 대한 초등학생 및 교사의 만족도 분석 (Analysis of Satisfaction of Elementary School Students and Teachers for Software Practice Education in Real-Time Video Classes)

  • 본 연구에서는 초등학생 5, 6학년을 대상으로 소프트웨어 실습 교육과정을 실시간 화상 수업으로 운영한 후 학습자 만족도와 교사 심층 인터뷰를 분석하였다. 학습자의 실재감, 수업전반, 상호작용, 실시간 화상 수업 만족도의 상관관계를 분석한 결과 실재감, 수업전반, 상호작용, 실시간 화상 수업 만족도는 다소 높은 정적인 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났고, 실시간 화상 수업 참여환경과 수업 만족도 사이에는 약간의 차이가 있었지만 모두 통계적으로는 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 교사의 경우 학생들의 개인별 PC 환경 및 수업 교구에서 발생하는 문제, 모둠 활동에서 학생들간의 상호작용, 부진 학생에 대한 개별 피드백에 상대적으로 어려움을 느끼고 있었다. 이를 해결하기 위해 실시간 화상 수업 참여환경에 대한 사전 안내, 수업 교구의 사전 점검 안내문 및 예비부품 제공, 보조강사를 활용한 부진 학생 및 접속 오류 지원, LMS를 활용한 개별 과제 피드백 실시 등에 대한 의견을 제시하였다.

초등학교 과학수업에서 교사의 학습 동기 전략 분석 (Analyses of Teachers교 Learning Motivation Strategies in Elementary Science Classes)

  • The purpose of this study was to define teachers' learning motivation strategies and students' responses by analyzing science classes and interviews. The subjects were first grade and sixth grade teachers and students of an elementary school. The analysis tools are based on Keller's ARCS theory. The differences of teachers' motivation strategies were analyzed by grades and teachers' and students' backgrounds. The interviewers were composed of three teachers and three students of first grade, and three teachers and three students of sixth grade. The data were collected by recording of the classes using tape recorders, video cameras, and notebooks written by researchers. The results are as follows. First, teachers had their own styles of teaching strategies in their classes. Especially teachers' teaching backgrounds affected on the teachers' instructional strategies. The teachers who had long teaching experiences of lower grade students used to show a lot of attention strategies. While the teachers with long teaching experiences of higher grade students used to show few learning motivation strategies. Especially, sixth grade teachers used to show fewer confidence strategies than first grade teachers. Second, all of the teachers used to show few satisfaction strategies commonly in all the classes observed. Third, the students' recognition of the motivation strategies were not different according to their conceptions or activities of the classes. Commonly first grade students focused on the attention strategies, while sixth grade students focused on negative motivation strategies. Fourth, the teachers who believed that students need detail guidance and control recognized the needs of satisfaction strategies by students' autonomous activities after observing video tapes of other teachers' classes.

오프라인 면대면 수업과 비동기식 온라인 수업의 학습효과에 대한 비교분석 연구 - 'HTML5 웹 프로그래밍' 과목의 강의평가 및 기말고사 문항을 중심으로 (A study on the comparative analysis of learning effects between offline face-to-face classes and asynchronous online classes - Focusing on lecture evaluation and a final exam question in the 'HTML5 Web Programming' course)

  • 이 연구에서는 코로나19(COVID-19) 대유행 이후 전 세계 교육현장에서 활용되고 있는 비동기식 온라인 수업의 학습효과에 대해 분석하고자 한다. 이를 위해 2019년에 오프라인 대면으로 진행되고, 2020년에 코로나로 인해 비동기식 온라인으로 진행된 HTML5 웹프로그래밍 과목의 강의평가와 기말고사 문항을 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 두 수업방식 사이에 유의미한 차이가 도출되지는 않았지만, 전체 교과과정의 온라인 수업 적용에 대한 우려와 달리, 동영상 기반 온라인 수업의 강의평가와 기말고사 점수가 높게 나타나 향후 온라인 수업의 구성과 관리가 잘 이루어질 경우 오프라인 수업보다 더 효과적일 수 있다는 가능성을 볼 수 있었다.
