The 3D numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the settlement behavior of flexible mat foundations subjected to vertical loads. Special attention is given to the improved analytical method (YS-MAT) that reflects the mat flexibility and soil spring coupling effect. The soil model captures the stiffness of the soil springs as well as the shear interaction between the soil springs. The proposed method has been validated by comparing the results with other numerical methods and a field measurement on mat foundation. Through comparative studies, the settlement of the proposed method was in relatively good agreement with those of a field measurement and other numerical methods. The results permit us to estimate the response of the mat foundation subjected to vertical loads that should be taken into account in the combination of mat flexibility and soil continuity characteristics.

Because intra prediction modes in H.264 are determined by the brightness continuity between neighboring blocks, they can be used as a method for extracting edge information in the compression domain. However, if we just consider 9 intra prediction modes in H.264 as 9 different edge directions, we have the following two problems. First, intra prediction modes tend to yield too many edge blocks, generating unnecessary edge information. Second, we may not need all 9 directional edges (including the DC type) in H.264 intra prediction modes. For example, the EHD (edge histogram descriptor) in MPEG-7 defines only 4 directional edge types, namely horizontal, vertical, diagonal (HVD) edges with $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $135^{\circ}$. Here, semi-diagonal (SD) edge types with $112.5^{\circ}$, $157.5^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, and $67.5^{\circ}$ in the intra prediction modes in H.264 are not used. In this paper. we prepose a method that removes unnecessary edges from the intra prediction modes by utilizing the total average coefficient of 4x4 blocks in each slice and assign SD edges to HVD (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, $0^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$) edges by the contextual information of the neighboring blocks. Experimental results show that the edges determined by the proposed method in the compression domain are comparable to those of the previous edge detection methods in the spatial domain.
Precast concrete structures are erected from individual prefabricated components, which are assembled on-site using different types of connections. In the present design of these structures, beam-to-column connections are assumed pin jointed. Bolted billet beam to-column connections have been used in the precast concrete industry for many years. They have many advantages over other jointing methods in component production, quality control, transportation and assembly. However, there is currently limited information concerning their detailed structural behaviour under vertical loadings. The experimental work has involved the determination of moment-relative rotation relationships for semi-rigid precast concrete connections in full-scale connection tests. The study reported in this paper was undertaken to clarify the behaviour of such connections under symmetrical vertical loadings. A series of full-scale tests was performed on sample column for which the column geometry and bolt arrangements conformed to successful commercial practice. Proprietary hollow core floor slabs were tied to the beams by 2T25 tensile reinforcing bars, which also provide the in-plane continuity across the connections. The contribution of the floor strength and stiffness to the flexural capacity of the joint is currently neglected in the design process for precast concrete frames. The flexural strength of the connections in the double-sided tests was at least 0.93 times the predicted moment of resistance of the composite beam and slab. The secant stiffness of the connections ranged from 0.94 to 1.94 times the flexural stiffness of the attached beam. In general, the double-sided connections were found to be more suited to a semi-rigid design approach than the single sided ones. The behaviour of double sided bolted billet connection test results are presented in this paper. The behaviour of single sided bolted billet connection test results is the subject of another paper.

A numerical analysis and hydraulic experiments were undertaken to investigate the head loss occurring when a flow passes through vertical perforated walls. The numerical analysis applied continuity, momentum and energy equations to the control volumes that were set near the perforated wall. Non-dimensional equations were then derived to calculate both upstream depth and head loss for the given values of downstream depth and velocity. The hydraulic experiments were performed with several single and triple perforated plates varying their opening ratios and intervals. The numerical results with the single plates were compared with the experimental results, and it was shown that the contraction coefficient of the vertical line jet formed after the perforated plates relies on downstream Froude number as well as opening ratio. Based on the experimental results, empirical formulas were formulated. Finally, the formulas were applied to the triple plates sequentially from downstream side to upstream side, and it was found that in general the predicted values nicely agreed with the experimental results.

In the present study, a flow analysis for estimating the wave loads acting on a stationary floating body inside a viscous numerical wave tank was performed using the commercial software FLUENT. The governing equations for the viscous and incompressible fluid motion were the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations, and a piston-type wavemaker was employed to reproduce wave environments. First, the optimal simulation conditions were derived through numerical tests for the wavemaker and wave absorber, and then the wave loads and wave run-up on a vertical truncated cylinder were estimated and compared with the experimental and other numerical results.

Film absorption involves simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the vapor-liquid system. In the present work, the absorption process of water vapor by an aqueous soluton of LiBr flowing inside of the vertical tube was investigated. The continuity, momentum, energy and diffusion equations for the solution film and vapor were formulated in integral forms and solved numerically. The model could predict the film thickness, the pressure gradient, and the heat and mass transfer rate. Particularly the effects of vapor flow conditions on the absorption process were investigated in terms of the vapor Reynolds number. As the vapor Reynolds number increased, the shear stress at the vapor-solution interface also increased. Consequently solution film became thinner at higher vapor flowrate under the co-currentflow condition. Thinner film was capable of higher heat transfer to the wall and leaded to higher absorption rate of the water vapor into the solution film.
Continuous deep girders which transmit the gravity load from the upper wall to the lower columns have frequently long end shear spans between the boundary of the upper wall and the face of the lower column. This paper presents the results of tests and analyses performed on three 1:2.5 scale specimens with long end shear spans, (the ratios of shear-span/total depth: 1.8 < a/h < 2.5): one designed by the conventional approach using the beam theory and two by the strut-and-tie approach. The conclusions are as follows: (1) the yielding strength of the continuous RC deep girders is controlled by the tensile yielding of the bottom longitudinal reinforcements, being much larger than the nominal strength predicted by using the section analysis of the girder section only or using the strut-and-tie model based on elastic-analysis stress distribution. (2) The ultimate strengths are 22% to 26% larger than the yielding strength. This additional strength derives from the strain hardening of yielded reinforcements and the shear resistance due to continuity with the adjacent span. (3) The pattern of shear force flow and failure mode in shear zone varies depending on the amount of vertical shear reinforcement. And (4) it is necessary to take into account the existence of the upper wall in the analysis and design of the deep continuous transfer girders that support the upper wall with a long end shear span.

In the treatment of the cleft lip, Millard rotation-advancement lip repair is usually adopted in many clinics for the focusing on the repair of the muscle layer continuity and preservation of natural landmarks, But there is a limitation in the wide cleft because of the asymmetry of the lip due to the vertical contracture of the scar and the shortness of the ala to commissure distance, so many modifications are proposed, This object of this study is to help in the cleft lip surgery with investigating its features and design respectively and compared its merits and demerits each other.
Sloshing frequencies of the fluid in rectangular tanks with a bottom-mounted rectangular block are determined by linear water wave theory. Velocity potential is decomposed into those for the wall-induced waves, and the reflected, transmitted, and scattered waves by the block. The reflection and transmission coefficients are determined using the continuity conditions of mass flux and energy flux on the common vertical boundaries of the fluid regions, and the boundary conditions on the both sides of the block. The analysis results indicate that the sloshing frequencies reduce, as the block becomes tall and vade and as the block moves toward the center. The variations of the sloshing frequencies due to the block are found to be more sensitive in broad thanks than is tall tanks.

Conceptual and technical design designated as digital architecture has been discussed with disorderly meaning as a conception only. Thus, this study aims at verification of development possibility for the digital architecture by analyzing how works of Frank Gehry have effect on nonlinearity of the digital architecture. Nonlinear characteristics appeared on works of Frank Gehry analyzed on the basis of expression techniques and modeling principle are as follows: 1) Initial works show a trend to gradually change and develop from horizontal and vertical linear structure to nonlinear pattern. 2) From a nonlinear modeling principle, initial works appear the primary deformation elements only, while afterwards, they are gradually developing to a pattern to mix the primary and secondary deformation elements as introduction of digital architecture. 3) Through specific cases, Frank Gehry has conducted attempts with various method for nonlinear pattern expression. 4) From the initial works to the latest works, continuity becomes higher and changed to nonlinear pattern. This study is significant from a viewpoint that it has verified development possibility of digital architecture by analyzing nonlinear trend of digital architecture for Frank Gehry and it is required to conduct multilateral researches related to the digital architecture.
