  • This paper presents the design procedure of a vertical wind turbine named jet-wheel-turbo turbine and the numerical and experimental verifications. The design parameters such as the rotor inlet angle, the diameter-to-hub ratio, the inlet guide outlet angle and the solidity were optimized to maximize the energy transfer, and to further increase the turbine efficiency by applying the side guide vane and the side opening to the rotor. The maximum power coefficient of 0.59, which is much higher than the ever-designed three-bladed horizontal turbines, was experimentally obtained when the optimal inlet- and side-guide vanes were installed and both sides of the rotor were 80% opened. The maximum power coefficients occur at the tip speed ratio ranging between 0.6 and 0.7. This vertical-axis turbine model can be applied to the large-scale power generation system with the speed and torque control algorithm for the specified wind characteristics.

  • Internet-based P2P computing with independent machines suffers from frequent disconnections and security threats caused by leaving, failure, network diversity, or anonymity of participated machines. Replication schemes of shared resources are used for solving these issues in many studies and implementations. We propose an operational replication scheme in P2P computing to share computing resources, and the scheme verifies the correctness of operation against faults and security threats. This verifications are carried out periodically on replicated and dependent working units without global message exchanges over the whole system. The verified working units are treated as checkpoints, and thus they could be put to practical use for fault-tolerance with rollback recovery.

  • Impact-echo test, a kind of simple and economical method to evaluate the integrity of drilled piles has some limitations to use because the stress wave can be generated only on the head of a pile and the wave propagation in the pile with surrounding soils are very complicated. Numerical analyses and model tests in the laboratory have shown that both the ratio of length to diameter of a pile and the stiffness ratio of pile to soil have influence on the resolution of testing results. Full scale testing piles which have artificial defects were used to verify the capability of impact-echo technique as a tool for the pile integrity evaluation. Behaviour of the reflected signal of stress wave was investigated according to the type of defects. Elastic modulus of the pile was calculated using the wave velocity in the pile and the unconfined strength of concrete specimen. Influences of the stiffness difference between the pile and the ground on the characteristics of a wave signal were also examined.

  • We have determined an optimal reduction condition for NiO-based anode in single chamber solid oxide fuel cells that involve samaria-doped ceria (SDC) as an electrolyte. Optimal condition should not only induce sufficient reduction of NiO to Ni, but also prevent the reduction of SDC electrolyte in order to achieve high open circuit voltage (OCV) and power output. Thermodynamic consideration allowed us to determine the optimal anode reduction condition as $96%H_2-4%H_2O$ atmosphere at $250^{\circ}C$. This finding was in a good agreement with the experimental verifications by monitoring the conductivities of SDC and NiO under different reducing conditions.

  • The power flow calculations are the most important and powerful tools in the various studies of power system engineering. Newton-Raphson method, among the various power flow calculation techniques, is normally used due to its rapidness of numerical convergency. In the conventional Newton-Raphson method, however, there are some unrealistic assumptions, in which all the system power losses are considered to be supplied by the slack bus generator. Introducing the system power loss formula and augmenting the conventional Newton-Raphson power flow method, we can relieve the unrealistic assumption and improve the performance of power flow calculation. In this study, A new approach for handling the losses and augmenting the conventional power flow problem is proposed. The proposed method estimates the increamental changes of active power on each generation bus with respect to the change of total system power losses and the estimated value are used to update the slack bus power. If some studies for more theoritical investigations and verifications are followed, the proposed approach will show some improvement of the conventional method and give lots of contribution to increase the performance of power flow techniques in power systems engineering.

  • Outlier detection is an imperative task to identify the occurrence of abnormal events before the structures are suffered from sudden failure during their service lives. This paper proposes a two-phase method for the outlier detection of Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring data. Prompt judgment of the occurrence of abnormal data is firstly carried out by use of the relational analysis as the relationship among the data obtained from the adjacent locations following a certain rule. Then, a negative selection algorithm (NSA) is adopted for further accurate localization of the abnormal data. To reduce the computation cost in the NSA, an improved scheme by integrating the adjustable radius into the training stage is designed and implemented. Numerical simulations and experimental verifications demonstrate that the proposed method is encouraging compared with the original method in the aspects of efficiency and reliability. This method is only based on the monitoring data without the requirement of the engineer expertise on the structural operational characteristics, which can be easily embedded in a software system for the continuous and reliable monitoring of civil infrastructure.

  • This paper presents the RF modeling for silicon nanowire MOSFET with 30 nm channel length and 5 nm channel radius. Equations for analytical parameter extraction are derived by analysis of Y-parameter. Accuracies of the new model and extracted parameters have been verified by 3-dimensional device simulation data up to 100 GHz. The model verifications are performed under conditions of saturation region ($V_{gs}$ = $_{ds}$ = 1 V) and linear region ($V_{gs}$ = 1 V, $V_{ds}$ = 0.5 V). The RMS modeling error of Y-parameters was calculated to be 1 %.

  • In this paper, we introduce the Partial Half-Through Type Plate Girder Bridge proposed by Hyundai Development Co. and KRTC Consortium in Turn-Key Based design last year, and this type of bridge may be adapted to the railway bridge under similar conditions. This bridge across the North Han River was to be concerned its find view and the protection of water source. For its location is inside the dam, it required the long span and the clearance for the flood also. Its new composite section was able to diminish the deflection and vibration. Its shop-fabrication could control its quality easily, and might to be launched. This structural type have satisfied its functions, construction situations, and overall safeties, so this is the field-oriented type. However the composition and connections of the proposed members are different to the recent forms, and difficult to be applied to present specifications. Therefore it requires a certification on the application for more safety by not only analytical verifications but also experimental studies. Nevertheless, this type of bridge may have some more applications from now on.

  • A problem of task rescheduling using a coordinator in a structural decentralized control of supervisory control theory is formulated. we consider that the overall system is divided into a number of local systems. Using an example of a chemical batch reaction process, it has shown that after local supervisors have been established for a given task, a coordinator can be used to solve some rescheduling problems among local plants for new or modified tasks. The coordination system models the interactions of local plants, and is consisting of only the shared events of local plants, so simpler to synthesize. A coordinator is designed based on the specifications given for the coordination system. Under the 'structural' conditions developed in this paper, the combined concurrent actions of the coordinator with the existing local supervisors will achieve the rescheduling requirements. Again since the conditions are structural (not specification-dependent), once the coordination architecture has been established, it can be used for a number of different tasks without further verifications.

  • As a result of the recent advances in magnetic materials, the Magnetic Amplifier(Magamp) technique is one of the reliable and cost-effective postregulation method for multiple-output power supply. This is true for high-current postregulated output since at highter output current the efficiency of linear postregulation is unacceptably low, while the complexity of more efficient switch mode postregulator is associated with a significant cost. Magamp have some advantages of higher power density, simple control circuit, good regulation, high frequency and high performance. In this paper, Operation principle of proposed approach and a performance of magamp control circuit with TL431 is described. The comparative analysis of magamp circuit and buck regulator circuit with 20W load condition is conducted. Experimental verifications on multi-output flyback converter are conducted. Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed approach is efficiency and voltage regulation of the auxiliary output is excellent.
