Chinese white cabbage, Chinese flat cabbage, lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, and green perilla were grown in nutrient solution culture to investigate the effects of various media and nutrient solutions. The culture media were sand, mixed substrate(peatmoss : sand= 1 : 1), and non-media(deep-flow culture). The nutrient solutions were Cooper's, Hoagland's, and Yamazaki's solution. Plants were grown under different treatments for three weeks. Generally, the growth was greatest in non-media culture and followed mixed substrate culture, and poorest in sand culture. In non-media culture, the growth of Chinese white cabbage, Chinese flat cabbage, lettuce, and green perilla was good in Yamazaki's solution. And regardless of nutrient solution, garland chrysanthemum was good in non-media culture. Relative chlorophyll was not different among the treatments.
Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is the causal agent of black rot for cruciferous vegetables worldwide, especially for the cole crops such as cabbage and cauliflower. Due to the lack of resistant cabbage cultivars, black rot has brought about considerable yield losses in recent years in China. Understanding of the pathogen features is a key step for disease prevention, however, the pathogen diversity, population structure, and virulence are largely unknown. In this study, we studied 50 Xcc strains including 39 Xcc isolates collected from cabbage in 20 regions across China, using multilocus sequence genotyping (MLST), repetitive DNA sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR), and pathogenicity tests. For MLST analysis, a total of 12 allelic profiles (AP) were generated, among which the largest AP was AP1 containing 32 strains. Further cluster analysis of rep-PCR divided all strains into 14 DNA groups, with the largest group DNA I comprising of 34 strains, most of which also belonged to AP1. Inoculation tests showed that the representative Xcc strains collected from diverse regions performed differential virulence against three brassica hosts compared with races 1 and 4. Interestingly, these results indicated that AP1/DNA I was not only the main pathotype in China, but also a novel group that differed from the previously reported type races in both genotype and virulence. To our knowledge, this is the first extensive genetic diversity survey for Xcc strains in China, which provides evidence for cabbage resistance breeding and opens the gate for further cabbage-Xcc interaction studies.
Due to climate change, the occurrence of abnormal weather conditions has become more frequent, causing damage to vegetable crops grown in Korea. Hot pepper, Chinese cabbage and radish, the three most popular vegetables in Korea, are produced more in the field than in the greenhouse. It has been a trend that the time for field transplanting of seedlings is getting earlier and earlier as the spring temperatures keep rising. Seedlings transplanted too early in the spring take a longer time to resume the normal growth, because they are exposed to suboptimal temperature conditions. This study examined the influence of air temperature during seedling growth on the time required to reach the first fruit maturity and yield of hot pepper. Seedling plants of 'Super Manita' hot pepper was grown in temperatures $2.5^{\circ}C$ and $5.0^{\circ}C$ lower than the optimum temperature (determined by the average of temperatures for the past 5 years). Seedlings were transplanted into round plastic containers (30-cm diam., 45-cm height) and were placed in growth chambers in which the ambient temperature was controlled under natural sunlight. The growth of seedlings under lowered temperatures was reduced compared to the control. The mineral (K, Mg, P, N) concentrations in the leaf tissues were higher when plants were grown with the ambient temperature $2.5^{\circ}C$ lower than the optimum, regardless of changes in other growth parameters. Tissue calcium (Ca) concentration was the highest in the plants grown with optimum temperature. The carbohydrate to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, which was the highest (18.3) in the plants grown with optimum temperature, decreased concomitantly as the ambient temperature was lowered $2.5^{\circ}C$ and $5.0^{\circ}C$. The yield of the early harvested fruits was also reduced as the ambient temperature became lower. The first fruit harvest date for the plants grown with optimum temperature (June 27) was 13 days and 40 days, respectively, earlier than that in plants grown with $2.5^{\circ}C$ (July 10) and $5.0^{\circ}C$ (Aug 6) lower ambient temperatures. The fruit yield per plant for the optimum temperature (724 g) was the greatest compared to those grown with $2.5^{\circ}C$ (446 g) and $5.0^{\circ}C$ (236 g) lower temperatures. The result of this study suggests that the growers should be cautioned not to transplant their hot pepper seedlings too early into the field, since it may delay the time of first harvest eventually reducing total fruit yield.
To characterize the nutraceutical property of Italian millet (Setaria italica) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), ten Korean landraces of each crop were collected and their vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols), squalene and phytosterols (campesterol, stigmasterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol) contents as well as fatty acid composition in seeds were evaluated. Italian millet seeds exhibited 5 forms of vitamin E isomers: three (${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$- and ${\delta}$-) tocopherols and two (${\alpha}$- and ${\gamma}$-) tocotrienols, while sorghum seeds showed only three forms of vitamin E isomers: ${\alpha}$- and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol and ${\alpha}$-tocotrienol. In both crops, ${\gamma}$-tocopherol was the major constituent of vitamin E in terms of highest quantity. Total vitamin E content in Italian millet and sorghum landraces were 88.3 mg/kg and 44.3 mg/kg, respectively. Among three phytosterols (campesterol, stigmasterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol) analyzed, ${\beta}$-sitosterol was the major form comprising about 85% and 65% in Italian millet and sorghum landraces, respectively. Total phytosterols content ranged from 443.0 to 568.5 mg/kg and 442.3 to 719.2 mg/kg in Italian millet and sorghum, respectively. Squalene, a precursor of phytosterols biosynthesis, ranged from 6.8 to 10.2 mg/kg in Italian millet and from 62.2 to 115.2 mg/kg in sorghum. Linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids were the major fatty acids in both of the crops and about 80% of the total fatty acids were unsaturated fatty acids. Among the tested landraces, M09 and S10 showed relatively higher proportion of phytonutrients, suggesting their potential as a gene source for further breeding program.

Marker-assisted backcrossing (MABC) is useful for selecting offspring with a highly recovered genetic background for a recurrent parent at early generation unlike rice and other field crops. Molecular marker sets applicable to practical MABC are scarce in vegetable crops including tomatoes. In this study, we used the National Center for Biotechnology Information- short read archive (NCBI-SRA) database that provided the whole genome sequences of 234 tomato accessions and selected 27,680 tag-single nucleotide polymorphisms (tag-SNPs) that can identify haplotypes in the tomato genome. From this SNP dataset, a total of 143 tag-SNPs that have a high polymorphism information content (PIC) value (> 0.3) and are physically evenly distributed on each chromosome were selected as a MABC marker set. This marker set was tested for its polymorphism in each pairwise cross combination constructed with 124 of the 234 tomato accessions, and a relatively high number of SNP markers polymorphic for the cross combination was observed. The reliability of the MABC SNP set was assessed by converting 18 SNPs into Luna probe-based high-resolution melting (HRM) markers and genotyping nine tomato accessions. The results show that the SNP information and HRM marker genotype matched in 98.6% of the experiment data points, indicating that our sequence analysis pipeline for SNP mining worked successfully. The tag-SNP set for the MABC developed in this study can be useful for not only a practical backcrossing program but also for cultivar identification and F1 seed purity test in tomatoes.

This study was conducted to find out the fundamentals for proper use of Planting system in the elementary school landscape. For this study, 70 text books were applied to quote the plants, planting situation of 15 elementary schools was surveyed, and 1,464 questionnaires were collected. The resultes and some proposals obtained are summarised as follows ; 1. Total of 177 plant species were quoted over all text books of the elementary school course. Among them, the woody species showed the highest in number with 58 and herbaceous were the next with 30, the other were vegetable of 29, food crops, weeds, industrial ornamentals crops and water plants in order. They were common species in this country and were easy to cultivate except few. 2. 210 species were planted at the 15 elementary schools in Mokpo. It was constituted of 77 of herbaceous species and 133 of woody species but localized Plants were little. The herbaceous plant frequently used were Chrysanthemum morifolium, Targests erecta, Salvia splendens, Petunia hybrida, Cosmos bipinnatus, Celosia cristata, Canna generalis, et. On the other hand in the woody species Juniperus chinensis var. kaizuka, Cerdus deodora, Camellia japonica, and in the shrub Serissa japonica, Thuja orientalis, Euonymus japonica, Buxus mrcrophylla var. koreana etc in order. Almost the same species of woody plants described above were planted in zone of I -IV. Therefore, many problems were found in aspect of aesthetics, and their function and growth. There was much differences in number of species and quantity of plants in each elementary school. However they were not associated with school size, location, and age of schools. Most of elementary schools did not have same the plants as they were represented in text brooks. Therefore, in view of educational purpose it needs to plant more species which quoted in text books.
The substitution of fossil fuels with biofuels has been proposed by the European Union (EU) as part of a strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from road transport, increase security of energy supply and support the development of rural communities. Vegetable oils and their derivatives (especially methyl esters), commonly referred to as 'biodiesel', are prominent candidates as alternative diesel fuels. They have advanced from being purely experimental fuels to the initial stages of commercialization. They are technically competitive with or offer technical advantages compared to conventional diesel fuel. However, several problems remain including economics, combustions, some emissions, lube oil contamination, and low-temperature properties. Therefore, quality control of fuel-related properties of biodiesel is needed to obtain consistent engine performance by fuel users. The quality of the fuel is affected by the oil composition. Rapeseed oil has been targeted for fuel use because it produces an oil with a close-to-optimum set of fuel characteristics. In this paper we have reviewed past and current efforts, both by traditional seed-breeding methods and by genetic engineering, to modify rapeseed oil quality and yield.
The effect of cultural, physical and chemical control methods on the population density of Meloidogyne arenaria second-stage juveniles (J2) and on fruit yields of oriental melon was investigated at Seongju Fruit Vegetable Experiments Station, Kyungpook province, Korea, for two years from 1999 to 2000. Crops used in a rotation prior to Oriental melon were rice, corn, sesame, and green onion. The physical methods used were either solarization, soil addition or soil drying, and a nematicide, fosthiazate of granular formula, was used as the chemical method, applying at a rate of 300g a. i./10 a. Growing rice in the rotation, solarization, and soil addition controlled the nematode disease most effectively, reducing the number of J2 by 90% and increasing fruit yields two times. However, the effects of these control methods on the J2 population were limited to the early growing season; the J2 population increased later, suggesting that additional control practices may be needed in the following season. The next effective control methods were use of corn in the rotation, the nematicide application, and soil drying. The nematicide application was effective only for the early fruit yield, but neither for the late nor for the total yields. Use of sesame or green onion in the rotation was not effective in controlling the nematode.

In this paper, soilless cucumber cultivation was investigated, fermented fertilizer to increase the cucumber yield was considered, and the greenhouse temperature control system for cucumber cultivation is developed. To do this, perlite was proposed to replace soil as growth medium. Fermented cows and pigs manure was proposed as plant fertilizer. Combination of fan, water sprinkler, and pipe heating system was proposed to control the greenhouse temperature. However, because this research was conducted during the summer, the greenhouse system observed in this study only focused on variations in the flow rate of the water sprinkles used. The experimental result shows that soilless culture in the greenhouse could be an alternative to traditional field production for high-value vegetable crops. Furthermore, application of fermented fertilizer of 10% could enhance the growth and increase the yield and quality of crops. The proposed sprinkler flow rate is best suited for cucumber crop with the best thrives was 0.846 kg/s.

In indian agricultural , the energy use pattern has played dominant role in influencing the level of mechanization . Besides that the agro-climatic factors as well as the size of holdings do affect the degree of mechanization . Nearly 30 percent of total cultivated area is owned by l76 percent of the small and tiny land holders each owning even less than a hectare. On the other hand, about 2 percent of land owners cultivate land. These variabilitieshave greatly influenced the ownership of power sources on Indian farms. Small farmers, employ human and animal energies with the use of hand tools and animal drawn equipments. Whereases, the use of tractors, power tillers, electric motors, etc. on small farms is on a marginal scale. There are few pockets and also extensive wheat growing regions where mechanical and electrical power sources are extensively used in production agriculture leading to about 185% of cropping intensity . In that region, the animal energy is employed for on the farm transport of fertilizers, fodders and fuel to support milch animals and other household activities . Inspite of high degree of mechanization, the harvesting of crops is done by human labour with few exceptions of harvesting wheat crops by combines in few pockets. In overall assessment of mechanization, the following conclusions are drawn : ⅰ) Farm operation which show a growing trend of mechanization are (a) tillge, (b) seedling (c) Irrigation (d) Plant protection application (e) Threshing and (f) Transport . ⅱ) Crop cultivation system in respect of wheat, maize and sorghum have been greatly mechanized. ⅲ) The least mechanized cropping systems are (a) vegetable production and (b) cultivation of sugarcane, cotton, rice and pulses. ⅳ) Annual production of tractor has touched the figure of 280.000 by 1995 and the total number has crossed 1.5million on Indian farms.
