  • This paper presents the design and analysis of a new input AC current wave shaping AC-DC converter for cost effective harmonic mitigation under varying loads. The proposed converter consists of a delta-polygon connected autotransformer based twelve-pulse AC-DC converter and a small rating passive shunt filter tuned at $11^{th}$ harmonic frequency. The proposed AC-DC converter eliminates the most dominant $5^{th},\;7^{th}$ and $11^{th}$ harmonics and reduces higher order harmonics; thereby, resulting in an improved power quality at AC mains. Moreover, the design of the autotransformer is modified to make it suitable for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse diode bridge rectifier is used. To validate the proposed approach, various power quality indices are presented under varying loads. Experimental results obtained on the developed converter are given to validate the model and design of the proposed converter.

  • Many papers have studied computer-aided simulations of elastic bodies undergoing large deflections and large deformations. But there have been few attempts to validate their numerical formulations used in these studies. The main aim of this paper is to validate the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) by comparing the results to experimental measurements on beams. Physical experiments with a high-speed camera were carried out to capture the large displacement of the beam and to verify the results of computer simulations. To consider the damping forces, the Rayleigh's damping and quadratic damping are employed and compared to the experimental results, respectively. Numerical results obtained from computer simulations were compared with the results from the physical experiments according to the $1^{st}$ mode and the $2^{nd}$ mode of the beam, respectively.

  • Wire drawing is a metalworking process used to reduce the cross-section of a wire by pulling the wire through multi-stage drawing dies. The aim of this study is to fabricate a drawing wire using 2 stage drawing process. The finite element analysis of wire drawing was conducted to validate the efficiency of the designed process and the experiment was performed to validate the designed wire drawing process using 2 stage tungsten carbide die. Dry lubricant with powder was applied for producing a wire of desired diameter. Finally, a drawing wire using 2 stage die for cold rolling mill was developed.

  • In this paper, the dynamic characteristic analysis of carriage structure supported by air bearings were performed. Toward this end, the characteristics of air bearing were numerically analyzed to estimate the stiffness of the air bearing and the clearance between air bearing and guide surface. The modal analysis of the carriage structure was performed by using finite element method, and the experimental modal analysis was also performed to validate the finite element model, where rigid body modes were compared to validate the stiffness of the air bearings. From the results, the air spring stiffness can be estimated within the range of acceptable accuracy under any pressure and clearance condition.

  • As society has changed to being more knowledge-based, it is necessary that change of paradigm is incorporated into engineering education and the education goals and the assessment method of educational outcomes is developed to promptly meet the needs of the times. A purpose of this study is to measure learning outcomes in coursework of engineering college every semester, which ultimately provides to validate program outcomes. We looked into teaching-learning style of course in the engineering college and analyzed its grade method and tool. By use of a survey, we derived a reasonable method to measure for the learning outcomes in course and presented tools for course-embedded assessment to measure that learning outcomes had been tied to their objectives. These tools are effective to determine that program outcomes and education goals have been achieved, ultimately. In addition, it will help that instruction builds a loop system for better.

  • Breast cancer detection using electrical impedance techniques is based on numerous experimental findings that cancerous tissues have higher electrical conductivity values than normal tissues. Lately, by taking advantage of the structure of current flows underneath a planar probe of array electrodes, a mathematical formula to find lesions from a measured transadmittance map has been derived. In order to experimentally validate its mathematical analysis and the suggested lesion estimation algorithm, we developed a 256-channel trans-admittance scanner (TAS) for probing anomalies underneath a planar array of electrodes. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the TAS. Its performance together with the lesion estimation algorithm was evaluated using saline phantoms. Further studies are proposed to validate the system on human subjects.

  • In this work we have investigated the feasibility of virus clearance by flocculation and tangential flow microfiltration. Chinese hamster ovary cell feed streams were spiked with minute virus of mice and then flocculated using cationic polyelectrolytes prior to tangential flow microfiltration. Our results indicate that flocculation prior to microfiltration leads to more than 100 fold clearance of minute virus of mice particles in the permeate. Today, validation of virus clearance is a major concern in the manufacture of biopharmaceutical products. Frequently new unit operations are added simply to validate virus clearance thus increasing the manufacturing cost. The results obtained here suggest that virus clearance can be obtained during tangential flow microfiltration. Since tangential flow microfiltration is frequently used for bioreactor harvesting this could be a low cost method to validate virus clearance.

  • In this research, a heater using eddy current for generator is designed and some analysis is performed to validate the system. FEM (finite element method) is used for analysing eddy current phenomena at the various speed of rotor with permanent magnet. A real heater system is fabricated. Some experiment is also performed to validate the analysis result. Through the experiment, the FE analysis is validated and we found that the efficiency of developed heater is over 94%.

  • In order to protect the head, baseball helmet must to have proper strength and to absorb the kinetic energy. The purposes of this study are to validate whether the helmet have the protecting ability or not. We performed three kinds of experiment to know about the this ability. To find out the limit of displacement at 4 points(front, rear, right side, and left side), the static load by magnetic dial gauges were used, and to validate the ability of absorption, drop tests were peformed from 0.5 and 1.0 meter. Futhermore, we calculated natural frequency of the helmets by the principle of Lissajous Diagram and we performed FEM(Finite Element Method) analysis. From the results of these experiments, we found that the displacement of helmet was largest at rear point and it was smallest at left-side point(ear-covered part). The ability of absorption was better at the left-side point than the other points.
