This paper presents numerical modelling, modal testing, finite element model updating, linear and nonlinear earthquake behavior of a reinforced concrete building model. A 1/2 geometrically scale, two-storey, reinforced concrete frame model with raft base were constructed, tested and analyzed. Modal testing on the model using ambient vibrations is performed to illustrate the dynamic characteristics experimentally. Finite element model of the structure is developed by ANSYS software and dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios are calculated numerically. The enhanced frequency domain decomposition method and the stochastic subspace identification method are used for identifying dynamic characteristics experimentally and such values are used to update the finite element models. Different parameters of the model are calibrated using manual tuning process to minimize the differences between the numerically calculated and experimentally measured dynamic characteristics. The maximum difference between the measured and numerically calculated frequencies is reduced from 28.47% to 4.75% with the model updating. To determine the effects of the finite element model updating on the earthquake behavior, linear and nonlinear earthquake analyses are performed using 1992 Erzincan earthquake record, before and after model updating. After model updating, the maximum differences in the displacements and stresses were obtained as 29% and 25% for the linear earthquake analysis and 28% and 47% for the nonlinear earthquake analysis compared with that obtained from initial earthquake results before model updating. These differences state that finite element model updating provides a significant influence on linear and especially nonlinear earthquake behavior of buildings.

The finite element analysis is frequently used to predict dynamic responses of complex structures. Since the predicted responses often differ from experimentally measured ones, updating of the finite element models is performed to make the finite element results agree with the measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use FRF(frequency response function) data without a modal analysis. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method in order to improve the method. The investigation is focused on how to obtain FRFs for unmeasured rotational displacements and how to consider damping. For the investigation simulated data and experimental data for a cantilever beam are used.

An Improved finite element model updating method to address the numerical difficulty associated with ill-conditioning and rank-deficiency. These difficulties frequently occur in model updating problems, when the identification of a larger number of physical parameters is attempted than that warranted by the information content of the experimental data. Based on the standard Bounded Variables Least-squares (BVLS) method, which incorporates the usual upper/lower-bound constraints, the proposed method is equipped with new constraints based on the correlation coefficients between the sensitivity vectors of updating parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated through the numerical simulation of a simple framed structure by comparing the results of the proposed method with those obtained via pure BVLS and the regularization method. The comparison indicated that the proposed method and the regularization method yield approximate solutions with similar accuracy.

In conventional model updating using single-objective optimization techniques, incompatible physical data are compared with each other using weighting factors. There are no general rules for selecting the weighting factors since they are not directly related with the dynamic behavior of an updated model. So one of the most difficult tasks, in model updating study, is 'balancing among the correlations' i.e. 'trade-off'. In this work, a multiobjecitive optimization technique called 'satisficing trade-off method' is introduced to extremize several correlations simultaneously. The absurd need for the weighting factors can be avoided using this technique. And the updated model with the most appropriate correlations is obtained easily in interactive way. Especially automatic trade-off is employed to increase the rate of convergence to the desired model. Its effectiveness is verified by application to a real engineering problem, HDD cover model updating.
This paper summarizes a study for the modal analysis and model updating conducted using the monitoring data obtained from the Canton Tower of 610 m tall, which was established as an international benchmark problem by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Modal properties of the tower were successfully identified using frequency domain decomposition and stochastic subspace identification methods. Finite element model updating using the measurement data was further performed to reduce the modal property differences between the measurements and those of the finite element model. Over-fitting during the model updating was avoided by using an optimization scheme with a regularization term.
The model updating problems, which are to find the optimal approximation to the discrete quadratic model obtained by the finite element method, are critically important to the vibration analysis. In this paper, the structured model updating problem is considered, where the coefficient matrices are required to be symmetric and positive semidefinite, represent the interconnectivity of elements in the physical configuration and minimize the dynamics equations, and furthermore, due to the physical feasibility, the physical parameters should be positive. To the best of our knowledge, the model updating problem involving all these constraints has not been proposed in the existed literature. In this paper, based on the semidefinite programming technique, we design a general-purpose numerical algorithm for solving the structured model updating problems with incomplete measured data and present some numerical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

In this study, a frequency domain model updating method is presented using power spectral density (PSD) data. It uses the sensitivity of PSD function with respect to the unknown structural parameters through a decomposed form of transfer function. The stiffness parameters are captured with high accuracy through solving the sensitivity equations utilizing the least square approach. Using numerically noise polluted data, the model updating results of a truss model prove robustness of the method against measurement and mass modelling errors. Results prove the capabilities of the method for parameter estimation using highly noise polluted data of low ranges of excitation frequency.

It is well known that the finite element analysis often has an inaccuracy when it is in conflict with test results. Model updating is concerned with the correction of analytical model by processing records of response from test results. The famous one of the model updating methods is FRF sensitivity method. However, it has demerit that the solution is not unique. So, the neural network is recommended when an unique and exact solution is desired. The generalization ability of radial basis function neural network is used in model updating. As an application model, a cantilever and a rotor system are used. Specially the machined clearance($C_p$) of a journal bearing is updated.

The updating of the FE model to match it with the experimental results needs the modal information. There are two causes where this methodology is ill-equip to deal with; under-determined and ill-conditioning problem. In this research, the feedback exciter which uses the summation of the white noise and the signals from the measurement sensors multiplied with feedback gains is proposed. The new energy path generated by the feedback exciter changes the modal characteristics of the system and this additional modal information can solve the under-determined problem in the model updating. Through the proper selection of the exciter and sensor locations and the feedback gain, the eigenvalue sensitivity of the updating parameters which cause the ill-conditioning of the sensitivity matrix can be modified. This methodology does not require any additional equipments, makes the acquirement of the additional modal information easy and is robust to the measurement noise.

The finite element analysis (FEA) is widely used in modem structural dynamics because the performance of structure can be predicted in early stage. However, due to the difficult in determination of various uncertain parameters, it is not be easy to obtain a reliable finite element model. To overcome these difficulties, updating program of FE model is developed by consisting of pretest, correlation and updating. In correlation, it calculates modal assurance criteria, cross orthogonality, mixed orthogonality and coordinate modal assurance criteria. For the model updating, the continuum sensitivity analysis and design optimization tool (DOT) are used. The SENSUP program is developed for model updating to obtain physical parameter sensitivity. The developed program is applied to practical examples such as the base plate of HDD, BLDC spindle motor, and upper housing of induction motor. And the sensor placement for the square plate is compared using several methods.
