  • Soil tests are generally conducted using a membrane to measure a pore water pressure. However, it has also been recognized that the membrane penetrates into the specimen by the change of the confining pressure, and it results in the erroneous measurement in the pore water pressure and the volumetric strain. This study examined the effectiveness of the correction equation of the membrane penetration on the basis of the experimental data acquired during the isotropic unloading and the cyclic shear process using the hollow cylindrical shear test equipment. The results showed that the membrane penetration by the correction equation could be overestimated when the mean effective stress was lower than 20kPa in this study. The limitations originated from the sudden increase near the zero effective stress, and in order to prevent the overestimation in low effective stress condition, the use of the constant a was proposed in this study. Furthermore, the correction equation for the membrane penetration had to be applied carefully when the initial relative density was high and the density changes were occurred by the relocation of the soil particle by the liquefaction.

  • When highly compressible, clayey soil layers lies at a limited depth and large consolidtion settlements are expected as the result of construction, precompression of soil may be used to minimize postconstruction settlement. In this study, we tried to find the possibility about the effect of ground improvement using flat dilatometer at the Inchon International Airport where preloading was installed. Field and laboratory tests were performed for soft ground before and after preloading in order to check the effectiveness of the soft ground improvement and compared with the test results of dilatometer which obtained before and after preloading at the same location Field tests such as flat dilatometer, vane, CPTu tests were performed before and after preloading and undisturbed samples are obtained to carry out laboratory tests. As comparing results, after preloading, unit weight, effective stress, undrained shear strength were increased and we can also check the decrease of consolidation late caused of decrease of void ratio. Furthermore, it is assumed that the possibility on the effect of ground improvement by using the flat dilatometer

  • This study was to evaluate the feasibility of pre-consolidation pressure distribution characteristic of western and southern coastal region, using correlation of unconfined compressive strength and preceding research equation. Pre-consolidation of western and southern region showed similar trends undrained shear strength and pre-consolidation pressure in proportion to unconfined compressive strength. Predicted results of U.S. NAVY. (1982) equation revealed a small error western 9.7 % and southern 0.4 %. Prediction correlation results of pre-consolidation using unconfined compressive strength revealed an error western 16.8 % and southern 0.7 %. It was reported that less than 20 percent of pre-consolidation pressure prediction result of Casagrande forecasting error. Estimates of pre-consolidation pressure are possible, before the standard consolidation test, because it was reported that less than 20 % of the forecasting errors of Casagrande.

  • Geotube is a tube made of geotextile and hydraulically filled with dredged soil. This technological method has been widely used in the advanced countries of the world to build the shore protection embankment. The dredged contaminated sediments from the lake, river, and harbor can be pumped into the geotube by using the hydraulic pump. So, environments effects can be minimized and enhanced by using this method. This paper presents a field test result of a geotube in the land reclamation project for the Songdo New City construction site. The dredged silty clay was dredged by the dredging ship and hydraulically pumped into the geotube. The height of geotube was measured at every filling stage and also measured width and diameter of geotube with the elapsed time. The unit weight of soil and undrained shear strength of filled soil in a tube were measured at the various locations and heights of geotube with the elapsed time. Geotube technique can be effectively implemented for the silty clayey soil with using the dredging ship.

  • In this study, the change of getechnical properties of sand due to cementation was investigated by undrained triaxial test of isotropicallv consolidated sample. For inducing the cementation, $5\sim20%$(sand weight) gypsum were included in the sand and cured in the mold under the overburden pressure 55kPa. The yielding strength and stiffness of cemented sand were increased and also the aspects of effective pore water pressure were changed as the degree of cementation and the relative density. Generally the degree of cementation exerted more influence on the behavior of cemented sand than the relative density.

  • In this paper, the existing Stokoe type torsional shear equipment is modified to saturate the specimen and measure excess pore water pressure during undrained testing. Two types of sands, Geumgang and Toyoura sands, were collected and TS tests were performed at various densities drainage conditions, and confining pressures. The cyclic threshold shearing strains were estimated based on the variations of shear modulus, material damping ratio and pore pressures with loading cycles. The effects of relative density, confining pressure, and drainage condition on the cyclic threshold shearing strains were investigated.

  • The aim of the work described in this paper is to study the shear characteristics of the weathered granite soil. To this end, a series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests are carried out to investigate the shear parameters-cohesion and internal friction angle for the degree of saturation and degree of weathering. From the results, it is found that the shear parameters of weathered granite soil are influenced on the degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance. Especially, internal friction angle is more influenced on the upper factors than cohesion. And shear parameters are more acted on the degree of saturation than the degree of weathering in the test range. It is, therefore, recommended that must be considered the conditions of granite soil-degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance etc-in case of the calculation of bearing capacity, stability analysis and other designs with shear parameters.

  • Undrained triaxial tests were peformed for a weathered soil, which includes local measurement using LVDT The behavior from small In large strain conditions could be evaluated consistently through a triaxial test, The stress-strain relationship of undisturbed samples were compared with the disturbed and the shear moduli in the small strain level had the almost same values. Especially the shear moduli were mostly affected by the initial condition of water contents. An anisotropic hardening model based on the total stress concept could predict the stress-strain relationship accurately, which makes it possible to analyze the geotechnical problem reasonably for the weathered soil.

  • A series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression testes were performed to increase field applications of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected and auto cutter was used to obtain reliable length of fibers. Remolded soil specimens were tested for obtaining the basic data to be applied to the reinforcement of soft clay, embankment or barrier and clay liner of wastes landfill etc. Conversion equations from weight to volume of clay mixed with short fiber are introduced and relationships between fiber content and fiber concentration are derived. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure increases. The best efficient reinforcing effect is given at the aspect ratio of 80~120 and the fiber content of 1.2%~2.4% and the fiber diameter of 0.27mm.
