In this study, relationships between CBR values tested by Korean Standards (KS CBR) and the elastic moduli from CU compression tests are developed for the subgrade soils. Triaxial compression and KS CBR tests are carried out on five types of samples from 15 points in Korean ezpressways. Triaxial compression tests are performed under 3 types of coifining pressures to generalize the CBR -elastic modulus relationship as functions of confining pressured and mean principal stresses. From the regression analyses of experimental results, equations for relationships between the KS CBR and elastic moduli of roadbed Boils are proposed. An equation for the relation- ship between the KS CBR and the maximum dry density of roadbed soil is also proposed.
The purpose of 1,his study is to analyze the compression and strength charactefistics of the decomposed -weathered soil originating from biotite gneiss or fine grained gneiss sampled from Poidong, Seoul : to figure out the behavioural characteristics of the decomposed -weathered soil in accordance with mineral composition and origin by comparing experimental results of residual soils. originating from granites and sampled from Bulam, Andong and Kimchun area. A series of CIU, CID CKoV, CKoD tests were car lied out. Although weathered soils have different origin and mineral composition, the slope of the NCL A was similar. It was also shown that plastic strain ratio was about 85% mainly due to the particle crushing effect during compression. The Poidong soil showed strain softening phenomenon unlike the Kimchun and Andong soils. this implies that the behavioural characteristics are affected by the origin and the mineral composition of the soil particles. Moreover, it was found that the angle of the shear resistance$(\phi')$ was dependent on the mineral composition. On the oher hand, measured Af values of decomposed weathered soils were more than one regardless of the origin and the mineral composition.
Recently, ground has been often exposed to high temperature environments such as chemical ground improvement, thermal energy storage system, and underground nuclear waste disposal system. Since the behavior of clay is sensitive to temperature change, the studies on the engineering properties of clay subjected to high temperature history may be important. This paper presents the mechanical behavior of clay with high temperature condition. $\bar{CU}$ tests using a high temperature and pressure triaxial compression test apparatus were carried out in order to investigate characteristics of deformation, shear strength, compression and consolidation of clay. During tests, the temperature was varied from $20^{\circ}C,\;50^{\circ}C,\;75^{\circ}C,\;80^{\circ}C\;to\;100^{\circ}C$.

A comprehensive laboratory investigation of the liquefaction characteristics of Jumunjin standard sand. Seoul sand and Hongsung sand was peformed by the undrained cyclic triaxial compression test under different relative densities, confining pressures and cyclic deviator stresses. The results obtained are as follows ; 1. Liquefaction potential was dominated by the stress ratio at a given number of cycle. That is, the number of cycle required to cause initial liquefaction became samller as the stress ratio increased. 2. Liquefaction potential of a sand was infliuenced by initial relative density or void ratio. Under a given relative density. liquefaction potential of Jumunjin standard sand and Seoul sand was smaller than that of Hongsung sand. 3. The pore pressure ratio of Hongsung sand was the smallest three under a given relative density and stress ratio, and it showed higher value when the cyclic stress and the shear strain were high. 4. An excessive pore pressure ratio not found when initial shear was smaller than 0.01%, and the pore pressure ratio started to increase when initial shear became greater than 0.01%. 5. Soil texture is an important factor to cause liquefaction, and liquefaction potential decreased a the mean grain size decreased. however the sand having fine grain such as Hongsung sand showed somewhat higher liquefaction potential. 6. Based on the analysis of the specimens whose number of the cycles to cause liquefaction was 8~12, it was found that the relationship between density and stress ratio was linear. The curves for Hongsung sand was steeper than the other. 7. From the above results and the method suggested by Seed-Idriss, it may be considered that the damages by Hongsung earthquake was not directly caused by liquefaction.

Experiments both in laboratory and field were performed to compare and analyze the characteristics of alluvial clay. The alluvial clay was sampled in test site in which large-scaled tests for the part of the site are under process to suggest the rational method for alluvial clay and the criterion for ground settlement monitoring system. The followings were observed through the experiments : 1. Natural water content, plastic limit, and liquid limit of alluvial clay composed of highly fine grains were 40~80%, 10~20%, and 30~55%, respectively. The values of these properties were relatively small at the ground surface, while the values showed maximum at G.L.- l0m and gradually decreased below the level. 2. Shear strength of alluvial clay was proportionally increased to the depth. Unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths were 0.2~0.6kgf/$cm^2$ and 0.1~0.3kgf/$cm^2$, respectively. 3. Compression index and secondary compression index showed maximum values at G.L.-l0m and gradually decreased below the level. The value of consolidation coefficient was relatively large at the ground surface, constant with decreasing the depth, and incresed when G.L. was below -20m. 4. Piezocone test appeared that alluvial clay with N value of 2~4 was uniformly distributed with 20~ 30m thickness from the ground surface, sand seam was nonuniformly distributed, and penetration pore pressure was 0.8 ~ 1 times of the hydrostatic pressure. Undrained shear strength and consolidation coefficient were 0.04 ~ 0.76kgf / $cm^2$ and $2.88{\times} 10{^-4}~1.3{\times} 10{^-2} cm^2/s$ respectively.

Greenhouses have been damaged due to the uplift pressure from strong wind, for which rebar piles are often installed near the greenhouse to resist the pressure. For the effective design of rebar piles, it is necessary to access the shear strength of soil on which the greenhouse is constructed. This study experimentally evaluates the shear strength of the soil beneath the greenhouse. Four soil samples were collected from four agricultural sites, and prepared for testing with 75, 80, 85, and 90% compaction rates. One-dimensional unconfined compression test (UC), consolidated-undrained triaxial test (CU), and resonant column test (RC) were performed for the evaluation of shear strength and shear modulus. Generally, the higher shear strength and modulus were observed with the higher compaction rates. In particular, the UC shear strength increases with the increase of #200 sieve passing rate. Resulting from the CU test, the sample with the most of coarse soil had the highest friction angle, but the variation is small among samples. Resulting from the CU and RC tests, the ratio of maximum shear modulus with the major principle stress at failure was the higher at the finer soil. The ratio was two to three times greater than the ratio from the standard sand. This indicates that the shear strength is lower for the fine soil than the coarse soil at the same shear modulus. The results of this study will be a useful resource for the estimation of the pull-out strength of the rebar pile against the uplift pressure.

For accurate laboratory evaluations of soil deposits, it is essential that the samples are undisturbed. An artificial ground-freezing system is the one of the most effective methods for obtaining undisturbed samples from sand deposits. The objective of this study is to estimate the shear strengths and the characteristics of elastic waves of frozen-thawed and unfrozen specimens through the undrained triaxial compression test. For the experiments, Jumunjin standard sands are used to prepare frozen and unfrozen specimens with similar relative densities (60% and 80%). The water pluviation method is used to simulate the fully saturated condition under the groundwater table. When thawing the frozen specimens, the temperature is measured every minute. After the specimens are completely thawed, undrained triaxial compression tests are conducted using the same procedures as for the unfrozen specimens. During the triaxial tests (saturation, consolidation, and shear phase), compressional and shear waves are measured. The results show that the freeze-thaw process has minor effects on the peak deviatoric stress and shear strength values, and that the process does not affect the internal friction angle. The compressional wave velocity increases with increasing B-value to 1800 m/s in the saturation phase, but tends to remain constant in the process of consolidation and shearing. The shear wave velocity decreases with increasing B-value in the process of saturation, but changes velocity in accordance with the change in effective stress in the processes of consolidation and shearing. The compressional wave velocity has similar values regardless of the freeze-thaw process, but values of shear wave velocity are slighly lower in frozen-thawed specimens than in unfrozen specimens. This study is a preliminary experiment for estimating the shear strength and characteristics of elastic wave velocity in undisturbed frozen specimens that have been obtained using the artificial ground-freezing method.
The purposes of this study are to investigate the mechanical prospeities of the inter mediate soils through consolidation tests and triaxial compression shear tests. The intermediate soils used in this study are artificial soils which are composed of sea clay, sand and it's crushed component. The relationship between plastic index and mechanical prosperties (permeability and compressibility) is investigated through series of consoli dation tests. Strain hardening phenomenon under shearing is explored based on several overconsideration ratios and strain rates in undrained shear tests. To make a comparative study difference of drain condition and strain rate, drain shear tests are performed with overconsolidation ratio.

The object of this paper is to study the shear characteristics of the weathered granite soil. To this end, a series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests are carried out to investigate the shear parameters-cohesion and internal friction angle-for the degree of saturation and degree of weathering. From the results, it is found that the shear parameters of weathered granite soil are influenced on the degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance. Especially, internal friction angle is more influenced on the upper factors than cohesion. And shear parameters are more acted on the degree of saturation than the degree of weathering in the test range. It is, therefore, recommended that must be considered the conditions of granite soil-degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance etc-in case of the calculation of bearing capacity, stability analysis and other designs with shear parameters.
Natural clays exhibit features such as structural and anisotropy. In this work, a constitutive model that is able to replicate these two salient features of natural clays is presented. The proposed model is based on the classical S-CLAY1 model, where the anisotropy of the soil is captured through the initial inclination and rotation of the yield surface. To account for the structural of the soil, the compression curve of the reconstituted soil is taken as the reference. All parameters of the proposed constitutive model have clear physical meanings and can be conveniently determined from conventional triaxial tests. This proposed model has been used to simulate the behavior of soft soil in the undrained triaxial tests and the performance of Murro embankment in terms of settlement and horizontal displacements during embankment construction and consolidation stage. Results of numerical simulations using proposed model have been compared with the field measurement data. The comparisons show that the two features significantly influence the prediction results.
