Analytical solution of stress-strain relationship of modified Cam clay in undrained shear

  • The modified Cam clay (MCC) model is used to study the response of virgin compressed clay in undrained compression. The MCC deviatoric stress-strain relationship is obtained in closed form. Elastic and plastic deviatoric strains are taken into account in the analysis. For the determination of the elastic strain components, both a variable shear modulus and constant shear modulus are considered. Constitutive relationships are applied to the well-known London and Weald clays sheared in undrained compression.

새만금 준설모래의 비배수 거동 (Undrained Behavior on Saemangeum Dredged Sands)

  • The results of an experimental study on Saemangeum dredged sands are presented. Undrained triaxial compression tests were performed with there different initial relative densities, namely 18, 34, and 50%, intend to evaluate undrained Behavior. All undrained triaxial compression tests were performed under static loading conditions. Undrained triaxial compression tests were exhibited complete static liquefaction, zero effective confining pressure and zero stress difference at lower confining pressures. As confining pressures were increased, the effective stress paths indicated increasing resistance to static liquefaction by showing increasing dilatant tendencies. The fines and larger particles create a particle structure with high compressibility at lower confining pressure. The effect of increasing relative density was to increase the resistance of the sand against static liquefaction by making the sand more dilatant.

자연 퇴적 점성토의 비배수 전단강도에 미치는 전단 속도의 영향 (Shear Rate Effect on Undrained Shear Behavior of Holocene Clay)

  • A laboratory investigation was carried out into effects of strain rate on undrained shear behavior of Holocene clay underneath Kobe Airport with an objective to evaluate the factor of safety of the retaining structure built on it. It was examined in a series of triaxial compression and extension tests performed using different rate of axial straining. A comparative compression test in which the strain rate was changed in steps was also carried out. Similar tests were performed in constant-volume direct shear box (DSB) test. And, the deformation characteristics of the clay were also examined in order to evaluate the variation of stiffness during undrained shearing. It was found that the undrained strength increased with not only the shear rate but also the consolidation period. ISOTACH properties seemed a key to govern the undrained shear behavior.

양산지역 점토의 비배수 전단강도 특성 (Characteristics of Undrained Shear Strength of Yangsan Clay)

  • SHANSEP method involves the consolidation to stresses in excess of the preconsolidation pressure in order to overcome sample disturbance effect. The concept of SHANSEP is based on an approach to laboratory test which attempts to reproduce the in-situ conditions more closely than is possible in routine tests and evaluates normalized strength parameters for the soil as a function of OCR. But SHANSEP method can be applied only to fairly uniform clay deposits, and is unsuitable for a random deposit. In this study, CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test and incremental loading consolidation test were performed for the application of SHANSEP method on Yangsan clay. During the K/sub o/-consolidation, triaxial specimens were consolidated to stress equal to two times the in-situ vertical effective stress. And for overconsolidated condition, the specimens were swelled to a known vertical effective stress in order to have the desired OCR. With the results of CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test using the block samples, the relationship between c/sub u//σ/sub vc/' and OCR on Yangsan clay was established. For evaluating the undrained shear strength of Yangsan clay with depth, CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test was performed using the piston samples taken from Yangsan site. And also undrained shear strength was analyzed from the in-situ test such as Cone Penetration Test(CPT), Dilatometer Test(DMT), and Field Vane Test(FVT) and was compared with that of CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test.

삼축압축시험과 전단파 계측을 이용한 정규압밀 점성토의 강성도와 전단강도의 상관관계 (Relationship between Stiffness and Shear Strength of Normally Consolidated Clay using Triaxial Compression Tests and Shear Wave Measurements)

  • Thanks to a new in-situ seismic probe, using bender elements and penetration scheme, a simple linear relationship between undrained shear strength(Cu) and shear wave velocity(Vs) was obtained. This priceless relationship is worthy to be illuminated further in ideal laboratory environment. To avoid sampling disturbance effect, special consolidation cylinders were used to make normally consolidated specimens from kaolinite suspension. The undrained shear strengths of the specimens were measured using unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests. Also shear wave velocity measurements were performedprior to shearing the same specimens, using the bender elements installed in the base pedestal and the top cap of the triaxial compression cell. The Cu-Vs relationship is fairly linear and supports the linear trend of clayey silt obtained using field testing. Also the classic density-shear modulus relationship for soft clay proposed by Hardin and Black(1969) was once more verified hereby.

단일황복면 구성모델을 이용한 정규압밀 점토지반의 비배수 거동해석 (Undrained Behaviour of Normally Consolidated Clay Foundation Using Single-Hardening Constitutive Model)

  • 본 연구는 탄 소성이론에 기초를 둔 Lade의 단일항복면 구성모델을 이용하여 정규압밀 점토지반의 비배수 거동을 연구한 것이다. 시료는 영산강 하류에서 채취한 무안 점토를 재생성시켜 동방압축팽창시험과 압밀비배수 삼축압축시험을 하여 이 구성모델에 필요한 11개의 토질매개변수를 결정하였다. 또한 비배수거동해석을 위한 유한요소 프로그램을 개발하였으며, 프로그램의 정도를 검증하기 위하여 매개변수결정에 사용된 시험결과를 역해석하였다. 그리고 2차원 모형지반에 재하시험을 실시하고 결과를 유한요소 프로그램으로 수치해석하여 서로 비교 검토하였다.

Effect of PBD to improve soft marine sedimentary ground

  • The effect of plastic board drains (PBDs)on ground improvement was checked out considering three crucial factors: ground settlement, undrained shear strength, and residual water head. First, the settlement analysis including initial settlement induced by reclamation of sand mat was conducted by back calculation analysis with measured data. Its result showed toot the PBDs used for this site worked well on improving soft ground. Secondly, the undrained shear strength was investigated by laboratory and in-situ tests including unconsolidated-undrained triaxial compression (UU) tests, unconfined compression tests, in-situ vane tests, and cone penetration tests. From the test results, they showed that the undrained shear strength of the improved ground by PBDs was significantly increased as well as the strength increasing ratio especially $10{\sim}15m$ below the ground surface on site. Thirdly, the residual water head measurement from the in situ dissipation test was found the same as the static water head, which indicated primary consolidation was completed and the effect of soil improvement with PBDs can be confirmed.

실트질 해사의 역학적 특성 및 거동에 관한 연구 (Strength Characteristics and their Behaviours of Marine Silty Sands)

  • A series of isotropic consolidation tests, undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was carried out to investigate the physical characteristics and behaviours of marine silty sands collected from the western coast of Korea. This study also included a theoretical development of the constitutive equation to evaluate stress-strain relationship and volume change of silty sands. The results and main conclusions of the study are summarized as follows; 1. Isotropic compression and swelling index are linearly decreased with an increase in relative density. 2. Both undrained shear strengh and elastic modulus are increased with an increase in relative density and confining pressure. 3. Internal friction angles obtained from drained and undrained compression tests of the soils are proportional to relative density. 4. The phenomenon of dilatancy of each sample is less profound when confining stress is increased but more profound when relative density is increased. 5. The slope of critical state lines is 1.78 for Saemangum, 1.70 for Siewha and 1.26 for Sukmoon sands. 6. In this study, Drucker-Praper type criterion is used and hardening function of Cap model is modified by hyperbolic fuction. This will improve a lack of physical meaning of hardening parameters in conventional Cap model. 7. A newly developed constitutive equation to the forementioned silty sands and checked its applicability. This is in good agreement with the measured data.

  • Anisotropic consolidation, shear, a transportational component during or after deposition each may produce anisotropic fabrics, which result in the anisotropic properties of soils. Nevertheless, the isotropically consolidated compression triaxial tests are commonly used in practice to determine the strength of the anisotropically consolidated soils because of their practicality and simplicity. In this paper the effects of anisotropic consolidation on the strength properties of soils are discussed. For the sandy soils consolidated under a constant vertical consolidation pressure, the deformation modulus decreases with decreasing consolidation pressure ratio($\sigma$$\sub$3c/'/$\sigma$ sub 1c/'), but the liquefaction resistance increases. For the saturated cohesive soils, both the undrained shear strength and undrained creep strength decrese with decreasing the consolidation pressure ratio. When the in-situ strength properties of the anisotropically and normally consolidated soils are determined by the isotropically consolidated tests, the undrained shear strength and creep strength of saturated cohesive soils as well as the deformation modulus of sandy soils are measured to be higher than the rear in-situ values. This, therefore, could lead to a dangerous judgement in stability analysis

해성점토의 지반 강도정수 상관성 분석 (Analysis on the Relationship of Geotechnical Strength Parameters in the Marine Clay)

  • 한반도 남해안 부산지역의 해성점토에 대하여 물리적 특성을 사전 파악하고, 지반 강도정수의 상관성을 분석하기 위하여 비교적 신뢰성이 크다고 할 수 있는 대형 항만공사 자료를 활용하였다. 분석자료의 정도를 높이기 위하여 해성점토만을 대상으로 하였다. 통일분류법으로 ML, MH, CL, CH, ML-CL에 해당되는 자료는 분석대상에 포함하였으며, SC로 분류되는 자료는 분석대상에서 제외하였다. 지반강도 특성에 대한 분석은 일축압축시험, 삼축압축시험, 현장베인시험 결과에 의한 비배수 전단강도, 예민비, 유효마찰각에 대하여 분석하였으며, 자료분석시 통계분석을 통하여 이상치를 제거하였으며, 또한, 교란도분석을 수행하여 결과에 대한 신뢰성을 높이고자 하였다. 상관관계 분석에서는 선형회귀분석을 수행하여 깊이에 따른 비배수전단강도의 상관관계를 검토하였다. 또한, 동일한 위치에서 수행된 일축 및 삼축압축시험 자료를 분석하여 비배수전단강도의 상관관계식을 도출하였으며, 그 결과 심도와 비배수전단강도는 $S_u=0.015148D+0.04624$의 관계를 보이며, 삼축압축시험에서 구한 비배수 전단강도가 일축압축시험에서 구한 비배수전단강도의 1.26배 정도 크게 평가되었다.
