An On-Line Adaptive Control of Underwater Vehicles Using Neural Network

  • All adaptive neural network controller has been developed for a model of an underwater vehicle. This controller combines a radial basis neural network and sliding mode control techniques. No prior off-line training phase is required, and this scheme exploits the advantages of both neural network control and sliding mode control. An on-line stable adaptive law is derived using Lyapunov theory. The number of neurons and the width of Gaussian function should be chosen carefully. Performance of the controller is demonstrated through computer simulation.

  • Dynamics of AUV has heavy nonlinearities and many unknown parameters due to its bluff shape and low cruising speed. Intelligent algorithms, therefore, are required to overcome these nonlinearities and unknown system dynamics. Several identification techniques have been suggested for the application of control of underwater vehicles during last decade. This paper applies the neural network to identification and motion control problem of AUVs. Nonlinear dynamic systems of an AUV are identified using feedforward neural network. Simulation results show that the learned neural network can generate the motion of AUV. This paper, also, suggest an adaptive control scheme up-dates the controller weights with reference model and feedforward neural network using error back propagation.

A study on practical method to estimate drag of super-cavitating underwater vehicles

  • In this paper, a simple practical method to estimate the drag of Super-Cavitating Underwater Vehicles (SCUV) is proposed that can obtain the drag with only principal dimensions in an initial design stage. SCUV is divided into cavitator, forebody, afterbody, base, and control fin and the drag of each part is estimated. The formulas for the drag coefficient are proposed for the disk and cone type cavitators and wedges used as control fins. The formulas are a function of cavitation number, cone or wedge angle, and Reynolds number. This method can confirm the drag characteristics of SCUV that the drag hump appears according to the coverage of the body by the cavity and the cavitator drag remains only when the entire body is covered by cavity. Applying this method to SCUV of various shapes, it is confirmed that the effects of cavitating and non-cavitating conditions, cavitator and body shape, and speed could be found.

  • Results of a numerical simulation of a flowing of the underwater vehicles hull with the pump-jet nozzle are presented. It was calculate velocity distributions coefficients of the lift force the longitudinal moment of the hull with the pump-jet nozzle and isolated hull for some values of angle of attack. It was shown that the area of the influence of the nozzle on the velocities distribution of the hull and character of changing of coefficients of the lift force and the longitudinal moment and their derivatives depending on angle of attack.

  • In this paper, H(sub)$\infty$ depth and course controllers of autonomous underwater vehicles using H(sub)$\infty$ servo control are proposed. An H(sub)$\infty$ servo problem is foumulated to design the controllers satisfying a robust tracking property with modeling errors and disturbances. The solution of the H(sub)$\infty$servo problem is as follows; firest, this problem is modified as an H(sub)$\infty$ control problem for the generalized plant that includes a reference input mode, and than a sub-optimal solution that satisfies a given performance criteria is calculated by LMI(Linear Matrix Inequality) approach, The H(sub)$\infty$depth and course controllers are designed to satisfy the robust stability about the modeling error generated from the perturbation of the hydrodynamic coefficients and the robust tracking property under disturbances(was force, wave moment, tide). The performances(the robustness to the uncertainties, depth and course tracking properties) of the designed controlled are evaluated with computer simulations, and finally these simulation results show the usefulness and applicability of the propose H(sub)$\infty$ depth and course control systems.

  • In this paper, depth and course controllers of autonomous underwater vehicles using H$_{\infty}$ servo control are proposed. An H$_{\infty}$ servo problem is formulated to design the controllers satisfying a robust tracking property with modeling errors and disturbances.   • This paper proposes a new heuristic search technique for obstacle avoidance of autonomous underwater vehicles equipped with a looking ahead obstacle avoidance sonar. We suggest the fuzzy relation between the sonar sections and the properties of real world environment. Bandler and Kohout's fuzzy relational method are used as the mathematical implementation for the analysis and synthesis of relations between the partitioned sections of sonar over the real-world environmental properties. The direction of the section with optimal characteristics would be selected as the successive heading of AUVs for obstacle avoidance. For the technique using in this paper, sonar range must be partitioned into multi equal sections; membership functions of the properties and the corresponding fuzzy rule bases are estimated heuristically. With the two properties Safety, Remoteness and sonar range partitioned in seven sections, this study gives the good result that enables AUVs to navigate through obstacles in the optimal way to goal.

  • This paper focuses on a horizontal waypoint tracking and a speed control of large diameter unmanned underwater vehicles (LDUUVs) with X-stern configuration plane. The concerned design problem is converted into an asymptotic stabilization of the error dynamics with respect to the desired yaw angle and surge speed. It is proved that the error dynamics under the proposed control scheme based on the linear control and the feedback linearization can be considered as a cascade system; the cascade system is asymptotically stable if its nominal systems are so. This stability connection enables to separately deal with the waypoint tracking problem and the speed control one. By using the sector nonlinearity, the nominal system with nonlinearities is modeled as a polytopic linear parameter varying (LPV) system with parametric uncertainties. Then, sufficient linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions for its asymptotic stabilizability are derived in the sense of Lyapunov stability criterion. An example is given to show the validity of the proposed methodology.

  • -In recent years, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) have been vigorously developed, and with the continuous deepening of marine exploration, traditional energy can no longer meet the energy supply. Nuclear energy can achieve a huge and sustainable energy supply. The heat pipe reactor has no flow system and related auxiliary systems, and the supporting mechanical moving parts are greatly reduced, the noise is relatively small, and the system is simpler and more reliable. It is more favorable for the control of unmanned systems. The use of heat pipe reactors in unmanned underwater vehicles can meet the needs for highly compact, long-life, unmanned, highly reliable, ultra-quiet power supplies. In this paper, a heat pipe reactor scheme named UPR-S that can be applied to unmanned underwater vehicles is designed. The reactor core can provide 1 MW of thermal power, and it can operate at full power for 5 years. UPR-S has negative reactive feedback, it has inherent safety. The temperature and stress of the reactor are within the limits of the material, and the core safety can still be guaranteed when the two heat pipes are failed.

Terrain-Based Localization using Particle Filter for Underwater Navigation

  • Underwater localization is a crucial capability for reliable operation of various types of underwater vehicles including submarines and underwater robots. However, sea water is almost impermeable to high-frequency electromagnetic waves, and thus absolute position fixes from Global Positioning System (GPS) are not available in the water. The use of acoustic telemetry systems such as Long Baseline (LBL) is a practical option for underwater localization. However, this telemetry network system needs to be pre-deployed and its availability cannot always be assumed. This study focuses on demonstrating the validity of terrain-based localization techniques in a GPS-denied underwater environment. Since terrain-based localization leads to a nonlinear estimation problem, nonlinear filtering methods are required to be employed. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) which is a widely used nonlinear filtering algorithm often shows limited performance under large initial uncertainty. The feasibility of using a particle filter is investigated, which can improve the performance and reliability of the terrain-based localization.
