Analysis on the Influence and Reinforcement Effect of Adjacent Pier Structures according to the Underpass Construction (지하차도 시공에 따른 인접 교각구조물 영향 및 보강효과 분석)

  • In order to solve the serious traffic congestion in seoul metropolitan city, large-scale underground space development such as underpasses, deep underground roads, and GTX (Great Train eXpress) is being carried out. In order to minimize the impact of the adjacent seoul metro line A pier foundation and stability due to the construction of the underground road in Seoul, earth retaining structures were reinforced and the foundation was reinforced as well. In this study, three-dimensional finite element mehtod analysis was performed to evaluate the effect on adjacent construction and to review the stability of the underpass excavation work. The reinforcement effect was quantitatively analyzed through numerical analysis. As a result of the analysis, compared to the result of performing the existing reinforcement when overlapping CIP and ground reinforcement grouting were performed, the displacement of the earth retaining structures was reduced by more than 50%, and stress of the foundation piles were also reduced by more than 45%. Based on the analysis of the numerical analysis results, it was confirmed that the displacement of the walls of earth retaining structures during adjacent construction should be strictly controlled.

Suitability Assessment and Maintenance Planning of the Guided Drainage Method on Underpass Structure (유도배수공법을 적용한 지하차도 설계 및 유지관리방안)

  • For the design of underpass structures, -1.0m(G.L) ground water level guideline for the design of railway, subway, utility tunnel etc, is still being used in Korea. As a result, the underpass structure can be forced by buoyancy, and therefore the in-situ buoyancy anchor method is usually being applied to prevent the uplifting force. For the Yeongjongdo sky city project, the drainage method was applied to remove the buoyancy force. In this study we estimate the efficiency and safety of the applied design and propose the detailed guidelines for standard design and maintenance of the guided drainage technique. Especially, the auxiliary pumping well was operated to maintain the ground water level around the underpass. In the study site, the applied guided drainage method has advantages in both engineering and economic aspects.

  • Although the development of Global Positioning System (GPS) are more and more mature, its accuracy is just acceptable for outdoor positioning, not positioning for the indoor of building and the underpass. For the positioning application area for the indoor of building and the underpass, GPS even cannot achieve that accuracy because of the construction materials while the requirement for accurate positioning in the indoor of building and the underpass, because a space, a person is necessary, may be very small space with several square meters in the indoor of building and the underpass. The Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localization is becoming a good choice especially for the indoor of building and the underpass scenarios where the WiFi signals of IEEE 802.11, Wireless LAN, are available in almost every indoor of building and the underpass. The fundamental requirement of such localization system is to estimate location from Access Point (AP) to mobile device using RSS at a specific location. The Multi-path fading effects in this process make RSS to fluctuate unpredictably, causing uncertainty in localization. To deal with this problem, the combination for the method of Neural Networks and Push-Pull Estimation is applied so that the carried along the devices can learn and make the decision of position using mobile device where it is in the indoor of building and the underpass.

Stability Analysis of Upper Structures by Soil Grouting (지반 그라우팅에 의한 상부구조물의 안전성 분석)

  • Transportation and further expansion of social infrastructure was needed along the development of urbanization and population concentration. To use the underground space due to the lack of availability of land, it is inevitable to intersect between present structure and tunnel during construction. Soil grouting is one of the ground improvement methods to reinforce weak soil around the underground structures by injection of grouting liquid. Some of central columns of an upper structure are damaged during injection of grouting liquid by injection pressure. To investigate and improve the stability of the tunnel, three dimensional analysis are performed with full construction stages which includes the construction of present underpass, damaging columns of the underpass, reinforcing the columns by H-pile and shear walls, and excavation and construct tunnel. The arrangement of grouting holes such as curtain and horizontal type affects largely to the stability of upper structure and horizontal arrangement diminish the shear forces which is the cause of damage of central columns. The liquid injection type of reinforcement for tunnel is not recommended while the presence of upper structure with columns. Wall type reinforcing is utilize for permant support of upper structures which is affected by grouting injection pressure. H-pile is utilize for temporary support, but not for permanent since the sharing of shear forces is not much to shear wall during tunnel construction.

Analysis on the characteristics of the earth pressure distribution induced by the integrated steel pipe-roof construction (일체형 강관 파이프루프 시공에 따른 주변 지반의 토압 분포 특성 분석)

  • In recent, various types of steel pipe-roof methods, which is reinforced by mortar after propulsion of steel pipe into the ground, have been used for the construction of trenchless underpass. Integrated steel pipe-roof has flexural stiffness and can resist against overburden load and reduce the stress acting on the concrete underpass structures. Due to arching effect, vertical and horizontal stress distribution around the steel pipe-roof is changing. In this study, therefore, the characteristic of stress distribution around the underpass induced by the construction of integrated steel pipe-roof is investigated by using numerical method. To examine the soil-structure interaction, interface element is introduced. Results show that vertical stress acting on the concrete structure placing inside the steel pipe-roof is significantly reduced due to arching effect and flexural stiffness of integrated steel pipe-roof. Design load can be reduced and effective design of underpass will be available if the earth pressure reduction due to arching effect is considered in the design stage.

Effect of shield tunnel underpass construction on the upper existing pipeline

  • The construction of the shield tunnel results in the deformation of the surrounding soil and the existing pipeline. It is important to analyze the deformation of the existing pipeline during the excavation of the tunnel. Based on the two-stage analysis method, the shear effect of pipeline due to the uneven settlement was considered and the deformation and internal force of existing pipeline due to the tunnel excavation were studied. The theoretical formulas were verified by the in-site monitoring. Compared with the theoretical calculation, the three-dimensional numerical simulation was established to simulate the deformation of the existing pipeline and the ground surface during the tunnelling. The effect of the Poisson's ratio, the tunnel diameter and the pipeline shading on the deformation of the existing pipeline were further investigated. The results show that the deformation curves of the pipeline and the ground surface conform to the Gaussian distribution, and the position above the axis of the tunnel experiences the maximum. When the excavation surface of tunnel crosses underneath the pipeline, the pipeline and the ground surface experience larger deformation and more subsidence, respectively. A certain amount of uplift is generated for the pipeline and the ground surface at ± 20 m away from the center line of the tunnel. The deformation of existing pipelines is affected by the tunnel excavation within its diameter range. The results can provide a reference for the design and construction of the shield tunnel underpass.

Assessing Compliance with the Wildlife Crossing Guideline in South Korea

  • To restore the connectivity of fragmented habitats, 415 wildlife crossings have been built between 1998 and 2014 in South Korea. However, their effect on wildlife conservation is still in doubt. As a first step to examine the effectiveness, our study aims to assess compliance with the guideline for wildlife crossing construction and management, developed by the Ministry of Environment Korea that provides fundamental information to understand the status and the problem of wildlife crossings in Korea and thus to provide practical guidance for the improvement. According to our survey, the Korea National Park Service complied with the guideline best (62.5%) while local government followed the guideline least (46.1%). In addition, the compliance rate was the highest for wildlife crossings in national roads (53.6%) followed by highways (53.2%) and local and municipal roads (52.2%). For the overpass wildlife crossings, the compliance rates for installation of an escaping facility in the drainage and prevention of pedestrian and vehicle access were particularly low. In case of underpass wildlife crossings, small ditches for amphibians and reptiles were not sufficient, and the linkage between wildlife fences and underpass were weak. In order to ensure the effectiveness of wildlife crossings, the effort to increase the compliance rate with the guideline is critical, and mandating the guideline could be a practical way to enforce the compliance.

  • This study was performed to investigate how to design, where to construct, why to degrade, what plan to use systematically the underground structures such as underpass, underground passageways. About 50% of the underground structures are located on Seoul, Kyungi-Do. In design of the underground structures such as underpass, underground passageways, the required conditions are defined. And also in construction stage, the conditions of soil, required structure depth, site characteristics, reasonable construction method, are investigated. In the selection of details for underground structure, the items mainly considered, are the wall and column type, the sidewalk type, anchoring-system type, the water-proofing method, entranc shape. The reason and the adequate measures for the degradation of concrete structure are also investigated. The initial cracking properties due to the thermal characteristic are considered. The state of the art report on the new technologies are reviewed. The recent project for the systematically application to the underground structures is reviewed.

Mechanical evolution law and deformation characteristics of preliminary lining about newly-built subway tunnel closely undercrossing the existing station: A case study

  • The development of a city is closely linked to the construction and operation of its subway system. However, constructing a new subway tunnel under an existing station is an extremely complex task, and the deformation characteristics and mechanical behavior of the new subway tunnel during the excavation process can greatly impact the normal operation of the existing station. Although the previous studies about the case of underpass engineering have been carried out, there is limited research on the condition of a newly-built subway tunnel that closely undercrossing an existing station with zero distance between them. Therefore, this study analyzes the deformation law and mechanical behavior characteristics of the preliminary lining of the underpass tunnel during the excavation process based on the real engineering case of Chengdu Metro Line 8. This study also makes an in-depth comparison of the influence of different excavation methods on this issue. Finally, the accuracy of numerical simulation is verified by comparing it with on-site result. The results indicate that the maximum bending moment mainly occurs at the floor slab of the preliminary lining, while that of the ceiling is small. The stress state at the ceiling position is less affected by the construction process of the pilot tunnel. Compared to the all-in-one excavation method, although the process of partial excavation method is more complicated, the deformation of preliminary lining caused by it is basically less than the upper limit value of the standard, while that of the all-in-one excavation method is beyond standard requirements.
