  • We developed a time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope system to investigate ultrafast magnetization dynamics. Based on the pump-probe method, 0.1-ps time resolution was achieved by use of a fs Ti:Sapphire laser. The magnetization dynamics was then measured on Pt/Co/Pt thin films with various Co thicknesses. All the samples exhibited ultrafast demagnetization within a few ps by direct heating of pump laser. Some thicker samples showed precessional motion of magnetization, from which the Gilbert damping constant was determined based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

  • Subpicosecond all-optical switching method based on the simultaneous two-photon coherence exchange is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The optical switching mechanism is based on the optical field induced dark resonance swapping via nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. For potential applications of ultrafast all-optical switching in fiber-optic communications, 10-THz channel number independent quantum router is discussed.

  • With the advent of ultra-short high-intense XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser), time-resolved dynamics has become of great importance in exploring femtosecond real-world phenomena of nanoscience and biology. These include studying the response of materials to femtosecond laser excitation and investigating the interaction of XFEL itself with condensed matter. A variety of dynamic phenomena have been investigated such as radiation damage, ultrafast melting process, non-equilibrium phase transitions caused by orbital-lattice-spin couplings. As far as bulk materials are concerned, the sample size has no effect on the following dynamic process. As a result, imaging information is not required by and large. If the sample size is of tens of nanometers, however, sample starts to experience quantum confinement effect which, in turn, affects the following dynamic process. Therefore, to understand the fundamental dynamic phenomena in nano-science, time-resolved imaging information is essential. In this talk, we will briefly introduce scientific highlights achieved in XFEL-based dynamics. In case of bio-imaging, recent scientific topics will be mentioned as well. Finally, we will aim to present feasible topics in ultrafast time-resolved imaging and to discuss the future plan of CXI beamline at PAL-XFEL.

  • We have surveyed on significant progress in recent developments of accelerator-based pulsed X-ray sources has offered the opportunity for time-resolved studies on fast structure dynamics on the nanometer scale. The required and currently available techniques for time resolved X-ray diffraction measurements using the third-generation synchrotron radiation sources are summarized. Ultrafast X-ray experimental techniques are discussed for femtosecond studies at future synchrotron radiation sources.

  • Standard positive photoresist techniques were adapted to generate nano-scale patterns of gold substrate using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and femtosecond laser. SAMs formed by the adsorption of alkanethiols onto gold substrate are employed as very thin photoresists, Alkanethiolates formed by the adsorption of alkanethiols are oxidized on exposure to UV light in the presence of air to alkylsulfonates. Specifically, it is known that deep UV light of wavelength less than 200nm is necessary for oxidation to occur. In this study, ultrafast laser of wavelength 800nm and pulse width 200fs is applied for photolithography. Results show that ultrafast laser of visible range wavelength can replace deep UV laser source for photo patterning using thin organic films. Femtosecond laser coupled near-field scanning optical microscopy facilitates not only the patterning of surface chemical structure, but also the creation of three-dimensional nano-scale structures by combination with suitable etching methods.

  • The present study investigates the thermal characteristics of a nanoscale superconductor material. A thin-film of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7-x$ was deposited on a $SrTiO_3$ substrate by using a pulsed-laser deposition technique and characterized using an ultrafast laser system. In order to extract a thermal conductivity value, a numerical solution for a transient one-dimensional heat conduction equation was obtained using a finite-difference method. The curve-fit shows a value 1.2 W/mK, which is relatively lower than those of bulk materials. This research provides a material property of superconductor thin-film required for the thermal design of micro or nanodevices.
