  • Conventional synchronization algorithms for impulse radio require high-speed sampling and a precise local clock. Here, a phase-locked loop (PLL) scheme is introduced to acquire and track periodical impulses. The proposed impulse PLL (iPLL) is analyzed under an ideal Gaussian noise channel and multipath environment. The timing synchronization can be recovered directly from the locked frequency and phase. To make full use of the high harmonics of the received impulses efficiently in synchronization, the switching phase detector is applied in iPLL. It is capable of obtaining higher loop gain without a rise in timing errors. In different environments, simulations verify our analysis and show about one-tenth of the root mean square errors of conventional impulse synchronizations. The developed iPLL prototype applied in a high-speed ultra-wideband transceiver shows its feasibility, low complexity, and high precision.

  • Frequency domain measurement of propagation loss for ultra high frequency (UHF) partial discharge in the winding of power transformer using a spectrum analyzer and pulse generator is presented. We compared the performance of the method using a network analyzer with and without a winding. Using a network analyzer simplifies the measurement and offers better dynamic range and frequency range. It also provides precise propagation loss within the winding in frequency domain at UHF range. We applied this method to measure UHF propagation loss of transformer mock-up, modeled 154 kV 20 MVA power in KEPCO substation.

  • In this work, ultra high-voltage (17 - 50 kV AC), reliable 80 pF mica capacitors for partial discharge system application were investigated. Mica was used as the dielectric of the capacitors. Using the conservative design rule, over 3 individual $50\;{\mu}m$ thick mica sheets with a size of 30mm{\times}35mm were used with lead foils to form a parallel capacitor element and 20 mica sheets were interleaved with lead foils to form a series stack of parallel capacitor element to meet the requirements of the capacitors. The dimensions of the fabricated 80 pF capacitors for 17 kV AC and 50 kV AC were $90\;mm{\times}90\;mm$ and $95\;mm{\times}180\;mm$, respectively. The high-frequency characteristics of the capacitance (C) and dissipation factor (D) of the developed capacitors were measured using a capacitance meter. The developed capacitors exhibited C of 79.5 - 87.5 pF, had D of 0.001% over the frequency ranges of 150 kHz to 50 MHz, had a self-resonant frequency of 65 MHz, and showed results comparable to those measured for the capacitors prepared recently by $Adwel^{Tm}$. The developed capacitors also showed excellent characteristics for thermal shock test and temperature cycling test.

  • This paper presents the design of high sensitive/broadband tag antenna for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in Ultra High Frequency(UHF) band. A proposed tag antenna size is $60\;mm\;{\times}\;10\;mm\;{\times}\;1\;mm$. The resonant frequency is 910MHz and bandwidth is about 900 MHz at -10 dB below. The measured return loss and directional pattern have been confirmed a good agreement with the calculation results. The read range of proposed tag antenna with chip is observed about 6.5 m and proposed tag antenna has been observed an average 0.5 m for more than read range of the commercial tag antenna.

  • This paper presents the VHDL implementation procedure of the passive RFID tag in Ultra High Frequency RFID system. The operation of the tag compatible with the EPCglobal Class1 Generation2(GEN2) protocol is verified by timing simulation after synthesis and implementation on prototyping board. Due to the reading range with relatively large distance, a passive tag needs digital processor which facilitates faster decoding, encoding and state transition for enhancement of the interrogation rate. Also with UART communication, verify a inventory Round in Gen2 Protocol. The verification results with the fastest data rate, 640kbps, and multi tags environment scenario show that the implemented tag spend 1.4ms transmitting the 96bits EPC to reader.

  • This paper presents method to suppress signal interference by using the filter in the RF output stage of the radiation equipment as a way to avoid interference between the RF(Radio Frequency) equipment mounted on aircraft. Especially filter design to suppress harmonics of the radiation equipment and testing method to verify the filter's performance is presented. Filter was installed at RF output stage of U/VHF radio in order to prevent interference between U/VHF(Ultra/Very High Frequency) radio and data link system. Filter design and testing method in this paper will be able to give help in the design of aircraft equipments as a tool that can be used to establish measures for problem of interference in the aircraft.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of electromagnetic wave propagation in power transformer. A transformer which is similar to 154 kV single phase on-site transformer unit was provided for the purpose of the experiment. The 12 dielectric windows on the transformer enclosure to install UHF (ultra high frequency) sensors and the full scale mock ups of winding and the core were also equipped in the transformer. Every sensors to be installed to the transformer was tested and verified whether they show same characteristics or not before the experiment. A discharge gap which was used as a PD (partial discharge) source moved to several necessary locations in the transformer to simulate dielectric defects. Propagation times of electromagnetic wave signal from PD source to sensors decided by the routes of both reflection phenomenon and diffraction phenomenon were compared each other. The experimental results showed propagation route of the PD signal makes an effect on the frequency spectrum of front part of the signal and the magnitude of the signal and propagation time of the signal when the signal is captured on the sensor.

  • In recent years, as nano scale structured thin film technology has emerged in various fields such as the materials, biomedical and acoustic sciences, the quantitative nondestructive adhesion evaluation of thin film interfaces using ultra high frequency scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM) has become an important issue in terms of the longevity and durability of thin film devices. In this study, an effective technique for investigating the interfaces of nano scale structured thin film systems is described, based on the focusing of ultrasonic waves, the generation of leaky surface acoustic waves(LSAWs), V(z) curve simulation and ultra high frequency acoustical imaging_ Computer simulations of the V(z) curve were performed to estimate the sensitivity of detection of micro flaws(i.e., delamination) in a thin film system. Finally, experiments were conducted to confirm that a SAM system operating at a frequency of 1 GHz can be useful to visualize the micro flaws in nano structured thin film systems.

  • This study aims to develop a fully passive smart sensing tag utilizing RF (Radio Frequency) energy harvesting technology at UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band of 915MHz. To optimize the power collected under various radiated conditions, an efficient energy harvesting module exploiting a boost circuit with maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is employed. Specifically, the proposed tag features two orthogonal antennas to enhance its capability of both energy scavenging and data transmissions. The experimental result shows that the developed smart sensor tag can scavenge an RF input power of as low as 0.19mW at a distance of 4 meters for a 3.6Vdc output. Furthermore, the proposed smart sensor tag performs the feasibility of completely autonomous monitoring food freshness at 2 meters with a low-power sensor array.

  • In this paper, we are presenting a case that integrates ultra high strength concrete(150MPa) with surface-exposed concrete. Ahead of the field application, we carried out laboratory experiment and B/P Test for a basic property of concrete(slump flow, air content, 50cm flow time, elapse time change and compression strength) and productivity. The next, we conducted Mock-up Test using simulation specimen to evaluate infilling, surface-finishing and hydration heat of concrete. We had satisfactory results for a basic property and hydration heat of concrete. However at the time of field application, it was occurred rupture of formwork because of high lateral pressure of concrete, and then formwork was reinforced and case-in-place time was adjusted. And regardless of low and high frequency vibration, it occurred to surface-pockmark. In case that applies ultra high strength concrete to surface-exposed concrete, we estimate that it is important of systematic management and improvement of construction.
