  • Experiments were performed with double-concentric diffusion flame(DDF) in order to investigate the characteristics of soot formation and temperature distributions. The flame size and shape of the DDF are similar to those of the well-known normal co-flow diffusion flame(WF), except the formation of a tiny inverse flame near the central tube exit. A laser light extinction technique was used to measure the soot volume fractions. The temperature distributions in the flame were measured by rapid insertion of a R-type thermocouple. Soot concentrations along the flame axis of the DDF were higher than those of the NDF. However, the maximum soot volume fraction of the DDF along the periphery of the flame was lower than that of the NDF. It is mainly due to the effect of nitrogen-dilution from the inner air. Measured temperature distribution explains these trends of soot concentration. The temperature along the flame axis was also higher in DDF than that of the NDF. However, the flame temperatures at the flame front of the two flames were almost same regardless of the inner flame. This phenomenon means that the inverse flame inside the DDF did not affect on the flame structure including the temperature and soot concentration, except the region around the flame axis.

  • Formation and transportation of $CO_2$-hydrate slurry was conducted by circulating saturated water with $CO_2$ through a double-tube type heat exchanger which was cooled down by brine. The inner diameter and circulation length of the heat exchanger were 1 inch and 20 m, respectively. Water in tank was supersaturated by injected $CO_2$ and the operation pressure was maintained at 3,000 to 4,000 kPa with fluid-temperature of less than $9^{\circ}C$. $CO_2$ hydrate mass fraction was calculated based on density of $CO_2$-hydrate slurry mixture. Results showed that the $CO_2$-hydrate slurry could be circulated without blockage for 1 hr. Circulation status of the $CO_2$-hydrate slurry was also visualized.

  • Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is considered to be involved in many pathological symptoms such as diabetic retinopathy, arthritis, inflammation and solid tumour. In particular, it is thought that angiogenesis is critical for development and growth of solid tumour. Recent study shows that there is a highly significant association of microvessel density with overall survival and relapse-free survival in patients with breast tumour In this study, the inhibition effect of angiogenesis of traditional herbs used for the treatment of cancer was examined. It was found out that the extract of Agaricus blazei by boiling water is a possible inhibitor of angiogenesis. It inhibited normal developmental angiogenesis In the chorioallantoic membrane of chick embryos and also inhibited capillary-like tube formation by endotherial cells on matrigel in vitro. These results suggest that Agaricus blazei can be a potent angiogenesis inhibitor.

  • In the present work, a new hydrogen added argon heat treatment process that prevents the formation of hydrides and eliminates the dehydrogenation step, is developed. Dissolved hydrogen has a good effect on sintering properties such as oxidation resistance and density of greens. This process can also reduce costs and processing time. In the experiment, commercially available Ti-6Al-4V powders are used. The powders are annealed using tube furnace in an argon atmosphere at $700^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ for 120 min. Hydrogen was injected temporarily during argon annealing to dissolve hydrogen, and a dehydrogenation process was performed simultaneously under an argon-only atmosphere. Without hydride formation, hydrogen was dissolved in the Ti-6Al-4V powder by X-ray diffraction and gas analysis. Hydrogen is first solubilized on the beta phase and expanded the beta phases' cell volume. TGA analysis was carried out to evaluate the oxidation resistance, and it is confirmed that hydrogen-dissolved Ti-6Al-4V powders improves oxidation resistance more than raw materials.

  • In biological particles such as Fusarium species, ice nucleation activity (INA) has been observed. Fusarium strains isolated from apple declined trees in Korea were identified with a multilocus sequence analysis using the tef1 and rpb1 genes. Droplet-freezing and tube-freezing assays were used to determine the INA of the strains, using Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae KACC 21200 as a positive control and resulting in seven INA+ fungal strains that were identified as F. tricinctum (KNUF-21-F17, KNUF-21-F18, KNUF-21-F29, KNUF-21-F32, KNUF-21-F38, KNUF-21-F43, and KNUF-21-F44). The effect of Fusarium INA+ KNUF-21-F29 was compared to that of INA- strains on Chrysanthemum morifolium cv. Shinma explants. A higher callus formation and no-shoot formation were observed, suggesting that fungal INA could play a role in cold injuries and be a factor to consider in rapid apple decline. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of INA fungal strains isolated in Korea.

  • Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a persistent parasite condition that causes the formation of tumorlike growths. It is a challenge to treat the disease. These growths need neovascularization to get their oxygen and nutrients, and the disease is prolonged and severe. Considerable research has been conducted on exosomes and their interactions with Echinococcus multilocularis in the context of immunological evasion by the host. However, the extent of their involvement in angiogenesis needs to be conducted. The primary objective of this investigation was to preliminarily explore the effect of exosomes produced from E. multilocularis protoscoleces (PSC-exo) on angiogenesis, to elucidate the mechanism of their roles in the regulation of the downstream pathway of VEGFA activation, and to provide ideas for the development of novel treatments for AE. The study evaluated the impact of PSC-exo increases proliferation, migration, invasion, and tube formation of HUVECs at concentrations of up to 50 ㎍/ml. In addition, the study sought to validate the findings in vivo. This effect involved increased VEGFA expression at gene and protein levels and AKT/mTOR pathway activation. PSC-exo are crucial in promoting angiogenesis through VEGFA upregulation and AKT/mTOR signaling. This research contributes to our knowledge of neovascularization in AE.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to elucidate the effects of Trichosanthes kirilowii extract (TKE) on the angiogenesis and growth of tumor cells. Methods : Tube formation assay was performed by using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), and anchorage dependent colony assay was performed by using B16-F10 melanoma, Hep G2 and HT1080, CT-26 and SNU-1 cells. Results : For HUVEC, TKE at a level of more than 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ suppresses cell growth. For HUVEC at 100 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and greater TKE density, the formation of tubes was suppressed in a dose-dependant manner. TKE controls the colony formations of B16-F10 melanoma cells, CT 26 cells, and Hep G2 cells, and its effect is proportional to density. In HT1080 cells and SNU-1 cells, formation is suppressed regardless of density. Conclusions : From these results, it could be concluded that TKE has significant properties on anti-angiogenesis and growth inhibiting of tumor cells. It is suggested that TKE will be a good candidate for new drugs or therapeutics for anti-angiogenesis.

  • Carbon molecules with closed-cage structures are called fullerenes $(C_{60},\;C_{70})$, whose applications include super-conductors, sensors, catalysts, optical and electronic device, polymer composites, and biological and medical materials. The synthesis of fullerenes has been recently studied with low-pressure benzene/argon/oxygen flames. The formation of fullerene is known as molecular weight growth processes of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon). This study presents results of PAHs and fullerene measurements performed in a low-pressure benzene/argon/oxygen normal co-flow laminar diffusion flame. Through the central tube of the burner, benzene vapors carried by argon are injected. The benzene vapors are made in a temperature-controlled bubbler. The burner is located in a chamber, equipped with a sampling system for direct collection of condensable species from the flame, and exhausted to a vacuum pump. Samples of the condensable are analyzed by HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) to determine the yields of PAHs and fullerene. Also, we computed mole fraction of fullerene and PAHs in a nearly sooting low pressure premixed, one-dimensional benzene/argon/oxygen flame (equivalence ratio ${\Phi}=2.4$, pressure=5.33kPa). The object of computation was to investigate the formation mechanism of fullerenes and PAHs. The computations were performed with CHEMKIN/PREMIX. As a result of this study, fullerenes were synthesized in a low pressure (20torr) $C_6H_6/Ar/O_2$ flames and the highest concentration of fullerene was detected just above the visible surface of a flame.

  • An evaporated Ti/Pd/Ag contact system is most widely used to make high-efficiency silicon solar cells, however, the system is not cost effective due to expensive materials and vacuum techniques. Commercial solar cells with screen-printed contacts formed by using Ag paste suffer from a low fill factor and a high shading loss because of high contact resistance and low aspect ratio. Low-cost Ni and Cu metal contacts have been formed by using electroless plating and electroplating techniques to replace the Ti/Pd/Ag and screen-printed Ag contacts. Ni/Cu alloy is plated on a silicon substrate by electro-deposition of the alloy from an acetate electrolyte solution, and nickel-silicide formation at the interface between the silicon and the nickel enhances stability and reduces the contact resistance. It was, therefore, found that nickel-silicide was suitable for high-efficiency solar cell applications. The Ni contact was formed on the front grid pattern by electroless plating followed by anneal ing at $380{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ for $15{\sim}30$ min at $N_{2}$ gas to allow formation of a nickel-silicide in a tube furnace or a rapid thermal processing(RTP) chamber because nickel is transformed to NiSi at $380{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The Ni plating solution is composed of a mixture of $NiCl_{2}$ as a main nickel source. Cu was electroplated on the Ni layer by using a light induced plating method. The Cu electroplating solution was made up of a commercially available acid sulfate bath and additives to reduce the stress of the copper layer. The Ni/Cu contact was found to be well suited for high-efficiency solar cells and was successfully formed by using electroless plating and electroplating, which are more cost effective than vacuum evaporation. In this paper, we investigated low-cost Ni/Cu contact formation by electroless and electroplating for crystalline silicon solar cells.
