  • In manufacturing automotive parts, such as engine cradles, frame rails, subframes, cross-members, and other parts from circular tubes, pre-bending and pre-forming operations are often required prior to the subsequent tubular hydroforming process. During some pre-forming operations, the cross section of a bent circular tube is crushed into an oval-like shape to ensure proper geometry and sufficient clearance in the hydroforming dies. For such applications, the use of oval Instead of circular tubes could be an effective means of eliminating the pre-forming step. The oval tube could also be produced with less thinning and with less strain on the outside of the bend when controlled by a booster system without the use of mandrel. Hence, the understanding of the issues that occur in the bending of oval tubes is worthy of Investigation. This paper presents parametric studies on the bending of oval tubes without a mandrel. The finite element modeling technique is used to examine the deformation characteristics for both circular and oval tubes. In the simulations, the bending process parameters of bend radius, aspect ratio of the tube ovalness, and tube wall thickness are varied. Observations are made to obtain a hoop-buckle limit diagram in terms of a non-dimensional shape degradation factor. Suggestions based upon developed criteria are made on the acceptability of bend tubes suitable for hydroforming applications without the need ofa pre-forming step or the used of a mandrel.

트램용 테어링 튜브 에너지흡수부재 설계와 동적 특성 연구 (A Study on Design and Dynamic Characteristics of Tearing Tubes Applied in Tram)

  • The paper aims to design and verify tearing tube type energy absorption device applied in tram to ensure safety in case of collision accident. Energy capacity of tearing tube is determinated based on EN15227 and Standard Collision Scenarios Criterion in Detail in Republic of Korea. Tearing tube is designed based on theoretical model suggested by X.Huang et al. and assumption by T.Y. Reddy et al. Real scale collision tests are conducted to analyze the energy absorption characteristics and deformation mode. Bending of curl tips is absorbed collision energy when curl tips and tube body are contacted to each other from the tests and we suggest and include the formula on bending of curl tips in theoretical model.

  • In this study, collapse behavior of frame composed of thin-walled rectangular tube is investigated. Considering the collapse of frame, the bending and compression members undergo large deformation. The stiffness of the compound element is obtained from analytical moment-rotation relationship and approximated load-deflection relationsh- ip of thin-walled rectangular tube. A computer program is developed for the large deformation analysis of frame. An incremental displacement method is used in the program and at each incremental stage, the stiffness matrix of the total structure is checked with the state of each element for bending and compression.

  • 복수의 내부튜브를 가진 골조 튜브 시스템의 전단지체 영향을 평가하기 위하여 수치적인 모델링 기법이 제안되었다. 이러한 튜브 구조물의 모든 튜브는 전단지체 영향 뿐만 아니라 휨과 전단변형의 영향을 설명할 수 있는 보로 각각 모델링된다. 수치적인 해석은 최소 포텐셜 에너지 원리에 근거한 변분 접근법에 기초한다. 복수의 내부튜브를 가진 튜브 구조물의 전단지체 현상이 부가적인 휨 응력에 의해서 조사되었다. 또한 튜브 구조물의 전단지체를 지배하는 구조변수를 연구하기 위하여 33개의 튜브구조물이 해석되었다.

Fatigue behavior of circular hollow tube and wood filled circular hollow steel tube

  • This paper presents the experimental work on fatigue life and specific fatigue strength of circular hollow sectioned steel tube and wood filled circular hollow section steel tube. Burning effect was observed in the case of circular hollow sectioned steel tube when it is subjected to Maximum bending moment of 19613.30 N-mm at 4200 rpm, but this did not happen in the case of wood filled hollow section. Statistical analysis was done based on the experimental data and relations have been built to predict the number of cycles for the applied stress or vice versa. The relations built in this paper can safely be applied for design of the fatigue life or fatigue strength of circular hollow sections and wood filled hollow sections. Results were validated by static specific bending strengths determined by ANSYS using a known applied load.

평관형 고체 산화물 연료전지의 연료극 지지체 NiO/YSZ의 환원 및 재산화 거동 특성 (Redox Behaviors of NiO/YSZ Anode Tube in Anode-Supported Flat Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells)

  • The redox behaviors of anode-supported flat tube for solid oxide fuel cell has been studied. The mass change of the extruded NiO/YSZ anode flat tube during redox cycling was examined by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). The result of TGA was shown a rapidly mass change in the range of $455\;-\;670^{\circ}C$ and the reoxidation of the NiO/YSZ anode was almost completed at $750^{\circ}C$. The starting temperature of reoxidation and the maximum temperature of oxidation rate decreased with increasing the reoxidation cycle, which is attributed to the increased porosity caused by volume change. Bending strengths of the NiO/YSZ anode after redox cycling were 96 - 80 MPa and the bending strength decreased slightly with increasing the redox cycle. On the other hand, the bending strength of the NiO/YSZ anode with electrolyte showed 130 MPa after first redox cycling but decreased rapidly with increasing the redox cycle. From the results of the bending test and the microstructure observation, we conclude that the crack initiation of the electrolyte-coated NiO/YSZ anode was induced easily at interface of electrolyte/anode tube and propagated cross the electrolyte.

Flexural performance of cold-formed square CFST beams strengthened with internal stiffeners

  • The tube outward local buckling of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) beam under high compression stress is still considered a critical problem, especially for steel tubes with a slender section compared to semi-compact and compact sections. In this study, the flexural performance of stiffened slender cold-formed square tube beams filled with normal concrete was investigated. Fourteen (14) simply supported CFST specimens were tested under static bending loads, stiffened with different shapes and numbers of steel stiffeners that were provided at the inner sides of the tubes. Additional finite element (FE) CFST models were developed to further investigate the influence of using internal stiffeners with varied thickness. The results of tests and FE analyses indicated that the onset of local buckling, that occurs at the top half of the stiffened CFST beam's cross-section at mid-span was substantially restricted to a smaller region. Generally, it was also observed that, due to increased steel area provided by the stiffeners, the bending capacity, flexural stiffness and energy absorption index of the stiffened beams were significantly improved. The average bending capacity and the initial flexural stiffness of the stiffened specimens for the various shapes, single stiffener situations have increased of about 25% and 39%, respectively. These improvements went up to 45% and 60%, for the double stiffeners situations. Moreover, the bending capacity and the flexural stiffness values obtained from the experimental tests and FE analyses validated well with the values computed from equations of the existing standards.

  • A 4-point pure bending res machine is developed the evaluate the pure vending moment-rotation properties of the thin-walled tubes without imposing shear and tensile forces. The moment-rotation properties of the thin-walled tubes are measured up to and beyond collapse with the pure bending test machine. The test results are compared with those of finite element analyses and existing analytical solution.

Creep analysis of concrete filled steel tube arch bridges

  • Applying the method calculating creep of Concrete Filled steel Tube (CFT) members based on the Elastic Continuation and Plastic Flow theory for concrete creep with the finite element method, the paper develops a new numerical method for the creep of CFT arch bridges considering effects of bending moment. It is shown that the method is feasible and reasonable through comparing the predicted stresses and deflection caused by the creep with the results obtained by the method of Gu et al. (2001) based on ACI209R model and experimental data of an actual CFT arch bridge. Furthermore, nine CFT arch bridges with different types are calculated and analyzed with and without the effects of bending moment. As a result, the bending moment has considerable influences on long-term deformations and internal forces of CFT arch bridges, especially when the section of arch rib is subjected to a large bending moment.

상계 해법을 이용한 순수 굽힘하의 원형 튜브의 단면 면화 해석 (An Analysis on Brazier Effect of Cylindrical Tubes Under Pure Bending by Upper Bound Method)

  • This paper presents a new model on deformation characteristics of cylindrical tubes under pure bending. The model is based on the upper bound method that minimizes total strain energy of a system. It does not assume inextensibility condition. Geometric relations and displacement fields are derived by analysis of deformation behaviors of elastic tubes. Simulations are calculated using numerical optimization and integration techniques. The results give information about cross-sectional deformation of cylindrical tubes. Simulation results are compared with available data in literatures, which show that this method predicts deformation characteristics of tube bending process.
