Drip irrigation system is a low energy cost method which can efficiently save and supply water by dropping water slowly on the crop's root zone during crop growth. In the drip irrigation system, disk filters take an important role to physically remove impurity (inorganic and suspended organic) particles present in agricultural water which can cause emitter clogging. For the purpose, both top-and-bottom surfaces of the disk are grooved in micron size flowing from outside to inside. However, many congested flow paths in disk filter media incur higher head loss of inflow water resulting in relatively decreasing velocities depending on operation time than sand and mesh filters. Therefore, it is important to optimize the structure of disk filter in micro irrigation system. The head loss of disk filter media takes also charge of more than 60 % of total head loss in whole disk filter. This study is to find the appropriate cross-sectional shape of the disk groove to minimize the head loss by executing the experiment. The experiment used three disk filters that have similar filter body but have a half-elliptic and two kinds of triangular cross sections. The experimental results showed that the disk filter with half-elliptic cross sections of disk grooves have less head loss than the disk filter with regular triangular one.

This paper proposes an efficient method for 3D modeling of a human face from trinocular images by reconstructing face surface using range data. By using a trinocular camera system, we mitigated the tradeoff between the occlusion problem and the range resolution limitation which is the critical limitation in binocular camera system. We also propose an MPC_MBS (Matching Pixel Count Multiple Baseline Stereo) area-based matching method to reduce boundary overreach phenomenon and to improve both of accuracy and precision in matching. In this method, the computing time can be reduced significantly by removing the redundancies. In the model generation sub-pixel accurate surface data are achieved by 2D interpolation of disparity values, and are sampled to make regular triangular meshes. The data size of the triangular mesh model can be controlled by merging the vertices that lie on the same plane within user defined error threshold.
A conservative finite-volume numerical method for unstructured grids with the cell-centered method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by combining the attractive features of the existing pressure-based procedures with the advances made in unstructured grid techniques. This method uses an integral form of governing equations for arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedure to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. For both convective and diffusive fluxes the forms superior to both accuracy and stability are particularly adopted and formulated through a systematic study on the existing approximation ones. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are computed by using a linear reconstruction based on the divergence theorem. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent the pressure checkerboarding and a segregated solution strategy is adopted to minimize the storage requirements with the pressure-velocity coupling by the SIMPLE algorithm. An algebraic solver using iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient method is used for the solution of linearized equations. The flow analysis code (PowerCFD) developed by the present method is evaluated for its application to several 2-D structured-mesh benchmark problems using a variety of unstructured quadrilateral and triangular meshes. The present flow analysis code by using unstructured grids with the cell-centered method clearly demonstrate the same accuracy and robustness as that for a typical structured mesh.
In this study, 2D finite volume model, which can apply to the mixed meshes that is effective to treat the complicated topography such as a natural river, is developed. To do so, an algorithm for finding the neighbouring cell of a computational cell is introduced, and fluxes are computed using the HLLC approximate Riemann solver at each interface between a computational cell and it's neighbouring cells. Moreover, in order to numerically treat the bed slope which has important effect on the balance between flux gradients and sourte terms, different formula to compute the bed slope for rectangular and triangular mesh are applied. The developed model is applied to analyze dam-break in an experimental channel with $90^{\circ}$ bend and Malpasset dam-break in France. The two cases consist of mixed meshes and the suggested method is validated for the experimental channel and natural channel by comparison with the experimental data, field data and computed results.
In this paper, a stabilized large eddy simulation technique is developed to predict turbulent flow with high Reynolds number. Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilized method and three-step technique are both implemented for the finite element formulation of Smagorinsky sub-grid scale (SGS) model. Temporal discretization is performed using three-step technique with viscous term treated implicitly. And the pressure is computed from Poisson equation derived from the incompressible condition. Then two numerical examples of turbulent flow with high Reynolds number are discussed. One is lid driven flow at Re = $10^5$ in a triangular cavity, the other is turbulent flow past a square cylinder at Re = 22000. Results show that the present technique can effectively suppress the instabilities of turbulent flow caused by traditional FEM and well predict the unsteady flow even with coarse mesh.

For the simulation of tsunami propagation an active dispersion-correction two-dimensional finite element model has been developed based on a shallow-water wave equation. This model employs an arbitrary triangular mesh and an explicit time integration scheme. However, the physical dispersion effects as included in the Boussinesq equations can be taken into account in the computation. The validity of the dispersion-correction scheme developed in this study is verified through the comparison of numerical solutions calculated using the new scheme with analytical ones considering dispersion effect of waves. As a result, the present model is shown to be considerably accurate.
In this paper, the prototype of SIS(Simulated Implantation System) for human femoral head is introduced. SIS is a software which carries on a virtual femoral head replacement surgery including 3d visualization as well as various numeric analyses between a patient's femur and artificial femur through certain stages of the image processing and of the computer graphics. Also, processes required after acquiring consecutive CT-images and projected image of an artificial femur are discussed, and the corresponding results including prototype of SIS are given.
For extracting geometric features in 3D meshes according to user-steering with effective interactions. this paper generalizes the 2D algorithms of snapping and wrapping that. respectively. moves a cursor to a nearby feature and constructs feature boundaries. First. we define approximate curvatures and move cost functions that are the numerical values measuring the geometric characteristics of the meshes, By exploiting the measuring values. the algorithms of geometric snapping and geometric wrapping are developed and implemented. We also visualize the results from applying the algorithms to extracting geometric features of general 3D mesh models such as a face model and a tooth model.

This paper describes a smooth surface interpolating method of ship hull using a three-dimensional currie net that comes from the mesh curve fairing process. Geometric continuity(($GC^1$) is preserved across the boundary curve between patches. The three-dimensional curve net can have nonrectangular topologies, such as triangular and pentagonal topology. Among the boundary curve interpolation methods, Hermite blended Coons patch, Convex combination, and Gregory patch interpolation method are used to generate the ship hull surface. To check the fairness of the surface, the numerical method of surface/surface intersection problem is adopted. An application to an actual ship hull is given as an example.
This work presents a practical detailed finite element (FE) approach for the three-dimensional (3D) free-vibration analysis of actual aircraft and spacecraft-type lightweight and thin honeycomb sandwich panels. It consists of calling successively in $MATLAB^{(R)}$, via a developed user-friendly GUI, a detailed 3D meshing tool, a macrocommands language translator and a commercial FE solver($ABAQUS^{(R)}$ or $ANSYS^{(R)}$). In contrary to the common practice of meshing finely the faces and core cells, the proposed meshing tool represents each wall of the actual hexagonal core cells as a single two-dimensional (2D) 4 nodes quadrangularshell element or two 3 nodes triangular ones, while the faces meshes are obtained simply using the nodes at the core-faces interfaces. Moreover, as the same 2D FE interpolation type is used for meshing the core and faces, this leads to an automatic handling of their required FE compatibility relations. This proposed approach is applied to a sample made of very thin glass fiber reinforced polymer woven composite faces and a thin aluminum alloy hexagonal honeycomb core. The unknown or incomplete geometric and materials properties are first collected through direct measurements, reverse engineering techniques and experimental-FE modal analysis-based inverse identification. Then, the free-vibrations of the actual honeycomb sandwich panel are analyzed experimentally under different boundary conditions and numerically using different mesh basic cell shapes. It is found that this approach is accurate for the first few modes used for pre-design purpose.
