  • In general, orthodontists make problem lists and treatment plans based on norms of several cephalometric standards. But consideration of dentoalveolar compensation, which tends to maintain normal dental arch relationship in various skeletal jaw relationships, helps orthodontists make more individualized treatment objectives and plans. The purpose of this study was to classify skeletal patterns of normal occlusion samples by cluster analysis and to investigate the dentoalveolar compensation according to skeletal patterns. The subjects were consisted of 125 subjects who were normal occlusion samples at Seoul National University Dental Hospital, Department of Orthodontics. Lateral cephalograms in centric occlusion were traced and digitized. The skeletal patterns of normal occlusion samples were classified into three horizontal groups and three vertical groups by cluster analysis and ANOVA on the skeletal and dentoalveolar measurements among the groups were carried out. The results were as follows ; 1. Anteroposterior and vertical skeletal relationships of normal occlusion samples were very variable. 2. As the mandibular position was anterior to the maxilla, the maxillary incisors inclined more labially, the mandibular incisors more lingually, and the occlusal plane was flattened due to the anteroposterior dentoalveolar compensation. dentoalveolar height was decreased and upper posterior teeth was uprighted to the palatal plane and lower incisors and lower posterior teeth to the mandibular plane. 4. Lower incisors were more strongly associated with the dentoalveolar compensation than upper incisors according to the anteroposterior and vertical skeletal relationship.

  • Objectives: Several practice guidelines recommended both medication and behavior modification to control hypertension. The objective of this study was to analyze ambulatory care utilization pattern and related factors. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 45,267 new users who initiated treatment with hypertensive drugs in 2003. Korean National Health Insurance Claims Data was used to study the medical care utilization behavior and related factors after treatment initiation for up to four years. Taking prescription was considered as medical care utilization. Results: More than 20% of patients discontinued visiting physicians for prescription after initiating antihypertensive drug therapy. The average number of institutions visited by patients was about 1.3 annually. Clinic was the most frequently visited institution by patients. In GEE analysis, probability of continuous visit one institution after initiating antihypertensive drug treatment increased in patients who were women, old, have comorbidity, visited clinic or hospital mainly in previous year. Conclusions: Young hypertensive male patients who have no major comorbidity showed high possibility to discontinue medical service utilization. It is necessary to educate these targeted patients about importance of hypertension management in early stage after treatment initiation.

  • Epidermal growth factor (EGF) activates many intracellular effector molecules, which subsequently influence the expression levels of many genes involved in cell growth, apoptosis and signal transduction, etc. In this study, the early response of gene expressions due to EGF treatment was monitored using oligonucleotide DNA microarrays in rat schwannoma cell lines. An immunoblotting experiment showed the successful activation of EGF receptors and an effector protein, STAT5, due to EGF treatment. The microarray study showed that 35 genes were significantly induced and 2 were repressed within 60 min after the treatment. The list of induced genes included early growth response 1, suppressor of cytokine signaling 3, c-fos, interferon regulatory factor 1 and early growth response 2, etc. According to the microarray data, six of these were induced by more than 10-fold, and showed at least two different induction patterns, indicating complicated regulatory mechanisms in the EGF signal transduction.

  • In this study, we investigated the morphological and physical changes of hair after bleaching treatments with different concentration of hydrogen peroxide in bleaching agent (3, 6, 9, or 12%) and various treatment time (10, 30, or 60 minutes). Tresses of virgin black hair were bleached using a commercial ammonium persulfate-hydrogen peroxide solution. The tensile strength of virgin hair treated with a bleaching agent depended on the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and the treatment time. As the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in bleaching agent went high and the treatment time increased, the tensile strength of the hair increased but the extension degree decreased. The virgin hairs which were not treated by bleaching agent showed morphologically healthy cuticle, whereas the bleached hairs showed swelled and damaged cuticle patterns. The swelling of the hair and the breaks of the cuticles increased positively by the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and the treatment time. These results suggest that exposure to more concentrated hydrogen peroxide with other bleaching components may lead to more severe hair damage.

  • In this paper, I analyze error cases a learner made during learning using ICT, set up error types, and search for effective treatment methods in order to enhance the effects of ICT education. I search for error case to use the methodology of the study which is observation, interviews, and survey. I set up the error types which is the error type of confusion with functions, that of confusion with concepts, that of barriers in interface interpretation, that caused by psychological anxiety, that according to learner personality patterns, and habitual error type. The biggest frequency of errors was found in the error type of confusion with function and that of confusion with concepts, whose treatment methods were searched for using the web-based Q&A learning. Also, I apply the error treatment methods on the classroom and prove the effect.

  • To obtain global gene expression profiles of Arabidopsis thaliana by acid stress, seedlings were subjected to low pH stress. Using Affymetrix AH1 chips covering 24,000 genes, we analyzed gene expression patterns. Fifty-four genes were up-regulated, and 38 were down-regulated more than 3-fold after 2 h of acid stress (pH 3.0). Several defense and abiotic stress-related genes were recognized among the up-regulated genes and peroxidase and extensin genes were identified among the down-regulated genes. After 12 h treatment, relatively fewer genes showed changed expression, indicating that plants seem to adjust themselves to this abiotic stress. Most of the up-regulated genes are already known to be involved in abiotic stress responses and pathogen attacks, especially wounding. However, down-regulated genes for the members of extensins and peroxidases are specific to the acid treatment. These results suggest that acid treatment turns on genes involved in stress responses, especially in wounding and turns off genes very specific for the acid stress.

  • Three kinds of acid clay are chosen as samples; sample-I is the Korean acid clay, Sample-II is prepared by heating the mixure of the Korean acid clay with 20% $H_2SO_4$ for 4 hrs., and the sample-III, the reference sample, is the Japanes acid clay supplied by Katayama Chem. Co.. 15 samples are prepared by heating them at temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, and $900^{\circ}C$ for 6 hrs. separately. The adsorption experiments are carried out on these samples using bromphenol blue water soln.(conc., 0.001%) as adsorbate. It is found that the degree of decoloration depends upon the temperature of thermal treatment, i.e., the higher the temperature the lower the degree of decoloration is. At any specified temperature of thermal treatment, the degree of decoloration is in following order: sample II>sample I>sample III.The X-ray photographs of the samples show that the intensities of a few specified lines decrease with increasing temperatures of thermal treatment.

  • A/J mice injected with urethane(1mg/ g of body weight) develop tumors with distinct histological patterns, which are classified as solid and papillary. I divided the mice into 3 groups; control group treatment with saline, BYA group treatment with herbal formula, Bopheyangyoungjeon 0.3g/kg and BYB groups treatment with herbal formula 1.5g/kg. The administration of herbal medicine was done every day for 56 days. The experimental results from herbal medicine treatment were compared to those from a saline-treated control group. Serial sections of the whole lung(150 to 200 sections per mouse) showed solid and papillary tumors arose from the pulmonary acinus, invading the bronchioles only as the tumors grew. The number of tumor, in the 8-weeks groups, are decreased in the experimental groups compared to control group. COX-2 protein and IGF- I protein expression was more increased in lung tumors of the control group compared to BYA and BYB groups. These results suggest that Bopheyangyoungjeon extract suppress the carcinogenesis of lung in the A/J mouse.
