Complex cervical spine fractures are a serious complications of maxillofacial trauma and associated with high mortality and neurological morbidity. Strict vigilance in preventing further insult to the cervical spine is a crucial step in managing patients who are at risk for neurologic compromise. We report a rare case of a right transverse process of atlas fracture with right-sided vertebral artery injury that was associated with a comminuted fracture of the body and angle of the mandible, which restricted mouth opening. Airway management was performed by an awake fiber-optic nasotracheal intubation, where neck movement was avoided with a cervical collar. Vertebral artery injuries may have disastrous consequences, such as basilar territory infarction and death, and should be suspected in patients with head and neck trauma. After mandibular plating, the patient was on cervical collar immobilization for 12 weeks and anti-coagulant therapy.
The imperfect steel-concrete interface bonding is an important deficiency of the concrete-filled double skin tubular (CFDST) columns that led to separating concrete and steel surfaces under lateral loads and triggering buckling failure of the columns. To improve this issue, it is proposed in this study to use longitudinal and transverse steel stiffeners in CFDST columns. CFDST columns with different patterns of stiffeners embedded in the interior or exterior surfaces of the inner or outer tubes were analyzed under constant axial force and reversed cyclic loading. In the finite element modeling, the confinement effects of both inner and outer tubes on the compressive strength of concrete as well as the effect of discrete crack for concrete fracture were incorporated which give a realistic prediction of the seismic behavior of CFDST columns. Lateral strength, stiffness, ductility and energy absorption are evaluated based on the hysteresis loops. The results indicated that the stiffeners had determinant role on improving pinching behavior resulting from the outer tube's local buckling and opening/closing of the major tensile crack of concrete. The lateral strength, initial stiffness and energy absorption capacity of longitudinally stiffened columns with fixed-free end condition were increased by as much as 17%, 20% and 70%, respectively. The energy dissipation was accentuated up to 107% for fixed-guided end condition. The use of transverse stiffeners at the base of columns increased energy dissipation up to 35%. Axial load ratio, hollow ratio and concrete strength affecting the initial stiffness and lateral strength, had negligible effect of the energy dissipation of the columns. It was also found that the longitudinal stiffeners and transverse stiffeners have, respectively, negative and positive effects on ductility of CFDST columns. The conclusions, drawn from this study, can in turn, lead to the suggestion of some guidelines for the design of CFDST columns.

Very-early strength latex-modified concrete(below ; VES-LMC) was developed for possible early-opening-to-traffic after overlay of bridge deck concrete. The purpose of this study is to analyze the cause of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control method for minimizing occurrence of cracking. The proposed prevention method against map and transverse cracking was verified by field data. VES cement was modified as the unit cement content was reduced from 390kg/$m^3$ to 360kg/$m^3$. The maximum size of coarse aggregate was increased from 13mm to 19mm. The wire mesh and steel fiber were adopted in concrete mixture. From the results, the proposed prevention method against map and transverse cracking was verified since structural cracking was not occurred until 3 years after overlay.

Fumigation using chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) has been regarded as a potential control technique against stored grain insect pests. The control efficacy can be enhanced with increase of opening rates of spiracles by facilitating the toxic gas delivery to internal body. To test this hypothesis, this study used the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella, which was known to be susceptible to $ClO_2$, and analyzed the opening rate of spiracles. A total of 9 pairs of spiracles were observed in P. interpunctella larvae, in which one pair was located on the prothorax and eight pairs were on the abdomen. Within the body, the spiracles were connected to longitudinal and transverse tracheal trunks. The open spiracles were determined by the dye-infiltration method. Based on this method, the opening rate of spiracles increased up to about 60% with increase of ambient temperatures. Furthermore, exposure to carbon dioxide stimulated the opening rate of spiracles up to about 95%. In contrast, exposure to $ClO_2$ prevented the spiracle opening and resulted in only 25% of spiracles in an opening state. The addition of carbon dioxide to $ClO_2$ treatment rescued the opening rate of spiracles as much as the carbon dioxide single treatment. Based on this modulatory activity of carbon dioxide against spiracles, the combined treatment of $ClO_2$ with carbon dioxide resulted in significant increase of its toxicity against P. interpunctella compared to a single $ClO_2$ treatment.
Concrete is a material that will crack during its service life by its very nature. For bridge decks this is especially significant as these cracks allow accelerated ingress of chlorides and the subsequent corrosion of the reinforcing steel and deck deterioration. Very-early strength latex-modified concrete (below ; VES-LMC) was developed in order to realize early-opening-to-traffic bridge deck concrete. Although there has been little research to document the degree of cracking in VES-LMC overlay, there has been a general perception among highway agencies that overlay cracking of VES-LMC, particularly early-age cracking, is a one of problems which should be solved. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cause of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control methods for minimizing the occurrence of cracks. The proposed prevention against map and transverse cracking was verified by field applications. VES cement was modified, the unit cement contents was reduced into $360kg/m^3$ from $390kg/m^3$, the maximum size of coarse aggregate was increase into 19mm from 13mm, wire mesh and steel fibers were incorporated in concrete mixture.

A ship is composed of many grillage structures especially the deck which is consists of primary girders, transverse and longitudinal members. Several holes are arranged on these primary members for pipes, vents, etc. which cause stress concentration due to the discontinuity of the member. It is not easy to get the stress values around all these holes because of the huge amount of time necessary for computations. In this paper, a simple method to compute for the stress around the holes is suggested. This method is composed of two steps which are grillage analysis for primary members and detailed stress analysis using the results of the grillage analysis. This method is made for the design of the primary members with openings supporting the deck structure.

The differential quadrature method(DQM) is applied to computation of eigenvalues of the equations of motion governing the free out-of-plane vibration for circular curved beams including the effects of rotatory inertia and transverse shearing deformation. Fundamental frequencies are calculated for the members with clamped-clamped end conditions and various opening angles. The results are compared with exact solutions or numerical solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The DQM provides good accuracy even when only a limited number of grid points is used.
This paper presents behavior of concrete pavement at transverse joint subject to static test load. The test was conducted on 1/10 scale model in the laboratory. Load transfer across the crack is developed either by the interlocking action of the aggregate particles at the faces of the joint or by a combination of aggregate interlock and mechanical devices such as dowel bars. In this study, significant three variables considered to the performance of joints were selected. : (a)diameter of dowel bars(2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm), (b)presence or absence of dowel bars, (c)aggregate types(crushed stone, round stone). Experimental results were analyzed to find relationships among displacement of discontinuous plane at jointed slab, load transfer efficiency and joint opening, etc. Displacement of discontinuous plane at joint was decreased according to the increase of dowel bar diameter. In addition, it is found that model slabs made using crushed stone had better load transfer characteristics by aggregate interlock than model slabs made using similarly graded round stone. Displacement of discontinuous plane was increased according to the increase of loading. In addition, it was decreased as dowel diameter(2.5mm, 3.0mm, 4.0mm) was increased. In the case of slab without dowel bars, displacement of discontinuous plane was greatly increased and load transfer effciency of slab applied crushed stone was shown 30 percent greater than round stone. In addition, load transfer efficiency of slabs, which were made using crushed and round stone without dowel bars, was decreased to 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively as it was compared with slabs made us-ing dowel bars.
Objective: To investigate the morphometric characteristics of the pituitary gland and diaphragma sellae in Korean adults. Methods: Using the 33 formaline fixed adult cadavers (23 male, 10 female), the measurements were taken at the diaphragma sellae and pituitary gland. The authors investigated the relationship between dura and structures surrounding pituitary gland, morphometric aspects of pituitary gland and stalk, and morphometric aspect of central opening of diaphragma sellae. Results: The boundary between the lateral surface of pituitary gland and the medial wall of cavernous sinus was formed by the thin dural layer and pituitary capsule. The pituitary capsule adherent tightly to the pituitary gland was observed to continue from the diaphragma sellae. Mean width, length, and height of the pituitary gland were 14.3${\pm}$2.1, 7.9${\pm}$1.3, and 6.0${\pm}$0.9 mm in anterior lobes, and 8.7${\pm}$1.7, 2.9${\pm}$1.1, and 5.8${\pm}$1.0 mm in posterior lobes, respectively. Although all dimensions of anterior lobe in female were slightly larger than those in male, statistical significance was noted in only longitudinal dimension. The ratio of posterior lobe to the whole length of pituitary gland was about 27%. The mean thickness of pituitary stalk was 2 mm. The diaphragmal opening was 5 mm or more in 26 (78.8%) of 33 specimen. The opening was round in 60.6% of the specimen, and elliptical oriented in an anterior-posterior or transverse direction in 39.4%. Conclusion: These results provide the safe anatomical knowledge during the transsphenoidal surgery and may be helpful to access the possibility of the development of empty sella syndrome.
In-plane free vibrations of circular beams with stepped cross-sections are investigated by using the exact analytical solution. The axial extension, transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertia effects are taken into account. The stepped arch is divided into a number of arches with constant cross-sections. The exact solution of the governing equations is obtained by the initial value method. Several examples of arches with different step ratios, different locations of the steps, boundary conditions, opening angles and slenderness ratios for the first few modes are presented to illustrate the validity and accuracy of the method. The effects of the geometric parameters on the natural frequencies are investigated in details. Several examples in the literature are solved and the results are given in tables. The agreement of the results is good for all examples considered. The mode transition phenomenon is also observed for the stepped arches. Some examples are solved also numerically by using the commercial finite element program ANSYS.
