Various transition elements are used in general for the effective finite element analysis of complicated mechanical structures. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element, which can b e used for connecting a C1-continuity beam element to a continuum solid element, is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite element are derived to meet the compatibility condition, and a transition element equation is formulated by the conventional finite element procedure. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition element, numerical tests are performed for various examples. As a result of this study, following conclusions are obtained. (1) The proposed transition element, which meets the compatibility of the primary variables, exhibits excellent accuracy. (2) In case of using the proposed transition element, the number of nodes in the finite element model may be considerably reduced and the model construction becomes more convenient. (3) This formulation method can be applied to the usage of higher order elements.
Various transition elements are generally used for the effective analysis of a complicated mechanical structure. In this paper, a solid-to-beam transition finite element which connects a continuum element and a $c^1-continuity$ beam element each other is proposed. The shape functions of the transition finite elements, which a 8-noded hexahedral solid element fur 3D analysis and a 4-noded quadrilateral plane element fur 2D analysis are connected to a Euler's beam element, are explicitely formulated. In order to show the effectiveness and convergence characteristics of the proposed transition elements. numerical tests are performed for various examples and their results are compared with those obtained by other methods. As the result of this study. following conclusions are obtained: (1)The proposed transition finite elements show the monotonic convergence characteristics because of having used the compatible displacement folds. (2)As being used the transition element in the finite element analysis, the finite element modelings are more convenient and the analysis results are more accurate because of the formulation characteristies of the Euler's beam element.
A new three-dimensional transition solid element was presented for the automated three-dimensional adaptive h-refinement or the local mesh refinement where the steep stress gradient exists. The proposed transition element was established by adding variable nodes(element nodes) to basic 8-node for an effective connection between the refined region and the coarse region with minimum degrees of freedom possible. To be consistent in accuracy with 8-node solid element with nonconforming modes, this transition element was also improved through the addition of the modified nonconforming modes. Numerical examples show that the performance of the element and the applicability to 3D adaptations are satisfactory.

A new three-dimensional transition solid element with drilling degrees of freedom is presented. The proposed transition element is established by adding variable nodes to a basic 8-node element for an effective connection between the refined region and the coarse. The derivation of the element in this paper is based on the variational principles in which the drilling rotations are introduced as independent variables. This element was also improved through the addition of modified non-conforming modes. Numerical examples show that performance of the element and the applicability to 3D adaptations are satisfactory.

The variable-node solid element with rotational degrees of freedom has been developed far efficient connection of transition zones and far connection of different types of elements with rotational degrees of freedom. In applying this new element to engineering problems, it is necessary to fine the relations between tractions and equivalent nodal farces. In this case, the equivalent forces in solid element with rotational degrees of freedom and ratational forces are a bit different from that af conventional solid elements. Some typical examples are presented.
The iterative procedure to use the nonconforming elements in elasto-plastic problems is established and applied to the variable node transition solid element developed for the automated three-dimensional local mesh refinement. Through numerical tests, the validity and performance of the element are examined. As the nonlinear iterative procedure presented in this paper is accomplished for the general three-dimensional case, it can also be easily applied to the two-dimensional elements such as membranes, plates and shells.

An attempt was made to evaluate the degree of aging degradation in thermally aged 2.25Cr-1Mo steel by electrical resistivity measurement. Artificial aging was performed to simulate the microstructural degradation in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel arising from long time exposure at $540^{\circ}C$. Microstructural parameter (amount of solid solution element), mechanical property (ductile-brittle transition temperature) and electrical resistivity were measured to investigate the mutual relationship among these parameters. Depletion of solid solution element(Mo and Cr) in matrix was detected after aging. The ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) increased rapidly in the initial stage of aging and then saturated afterward. On the other hand, the electrical resistivity decreased rapidly in the beginning and then saturated in the later stage of aging.
This paper presents an effective application of a variable-node axisymmetric solid element designated as AQV (Axisymmetric Quadrilateral Variable-node element). The variable-node element with physical midside nodes helps to overcome some problems in connecting the different layer patterns on a quadrilateral mesh in the adaptive h-refinement. This element alleviates the necessity of imposing displacement constraints on irregular (hanging) nodes in order to enforce the inter-element compatibility. Therefore, the elements with variable mid-side nodes can be used effectively in the local mesh refinement for the axisymmetric structures which have stress concentrations. A modified Gaussian quadrature should be adopted to evaluate the stiffness matrices of the variable-node elements mainly because of the slope discontinuity of assumed displacement within the elements. Some numerical examples show the usefulness of variable-node axisymmetric elements in the practical application.

In this paper, an effective procedure is presented for the local recovery of displacements and stresses in multilayered composite panels, which incorporate the local refinement using mesh superposition. The mesh superposition method is used to refine the global coarse mesh by superimposing refined mesh to the localized zone of interest without transition zones. The finite element model used is a solid element based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The a posteriori computation of the through-the-thickness distributions of displacements and stresses is achieved using a predictor-corrector procedure. The procedure utilizes the superconvergent stresses and nodal displacements of the finite element patch. The element patch is generated by locally superimposing a refined local mesh to the coarse global mesh.
