  • In this paper, an IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN 868/915 MHz ZigBee transceiver for IoT systems was designed and implemented. Non-coherent demodulation was exploited to satisfy ${\pm}80ppm$ frequency offset recommended in IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN. Variable bitrate was supported according to operation modes. SPI module was embedded to connect various MCUs. The designed Zigbee transceiver was described in Verilog HDL and it was synthesized and verified in $0.18{\mu}m$ process. Its gate count was about 32,000 gates.

  • In this paper we proposed a dual-frequency circular sector microstrip antenna with orthogonal polarized modes and high isolation between the two feeding ports. And then we designed a transceiver operating at 5.6 GHz for transmitting and at 5.5 GHz for receiving. The good isolation provided by the proposed antenna is used as the basis for the transmit-receive filtering of transceiver. The operating frequencies and polarization characteristics of the proposed antenna is calculated by using a cavity model. The 5-parameters and radiation patterns of the antenna are measured. A power amplifier and a low noise amplifier are designed and integrated with antenna to make a transceiver, which has about 13dB transmitting gain and about 8㏈ receiving gain.

  • Recently, HSRC (Half-Symbol-Rate-Carrier) OQPSK (Offset Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) signaling which reduces the bandwidth of transmitted signal for high-speed data communications has been introduced. Since the signal is based on QPSK modulation, it also has the characteristics of QPSK signal. This paper introduces architectures of the transceiver using differential coding to resolve the 4-phase ambiguity problem of the HSRC-QOPSK signaling for high-speed data communications. In addition, this paper proves the functionality of the transceiver with differential coding and shows the BER (bit-error-rate) performance of the transceiver by simulations.

  • We devised a bird-borne transceiver unit for S-band packet radio communications based on the CC2500 transceiver, a device manufactured by Texas Instruments (TI). Our assessments determined the optimal parameters needed to achieve successful bird-to-center communication over a distance of 18 km and bird-to-bird communication over a distance of 200 m. These parameters included optimal modulation methods, transmission rates, and antennas. We equipped the transceiver unit with a modified dipole antenna (collinear antenna), which we tested in a 10 m anechoic chamber. Our experimental assessments and circuit design review identified the following parameters: 2FSK modulation method; 14.28 kHz frequency shift; 101.56 kHz IF reception bandwidth; and Manchester encoding (+). Our assessments showed bird-to-bird communications could be achieved over a distance of 200 m assuming MSK, FEC (+), and 500 kbps. Following tests by an official body, we obtained 28 sets of a type approval license for 2.4 GHz. In cooperation with the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, we attempted to tag and release six or more swans. This unit gives us the ability to obtain vital data on swans. We expect this data to provide significant benefits, including clues on improving screening for infected individuals.

  • In this paper, the phase noise effects of OFDM transceiver diversity systems were analyzed. Since OFDM communication system is very sensitive to phase noise, the system performance may degrade seriously due to the increase of subcarrier interferences and system noise. Therefore, the phase noise model was suggested and its distribution and power were varied to investigate the effects of phase noise on the system performance. The degree of the system performance degradation depends on the specific diversity structures of transceiver systems. Here, the performances of OFDM systems with two antennas transceiver diversity were analyzed and compared with that of systems with only transmission diversity and without diversity as the phase noise characteristics varied.

  • In this study, we analyze the structure of the transceiver coil in the inductive power transfer (IPT) system. In the IPT system, the transceiver coil design needs to have the highest magnetic coupling possible because of the relatively low magnetic coupling due to the large gap of distance without the core. The transmitting coil may be formed as a multi-layer type according to the distance between the transmitting and receiving coils if the receiving coil is configured as a multi-layer type on the inner structure of the receiving apparatus, thereby improving the magnetic coupling and system efficiency. We compare and analyze the coil magnetic coupling, and system efficiency according to the layer structure of the transmitting and receiving coils and verify the analysis by JMAG simulation. Experimental results show that the layer structure of the transceiver should be considered according to the inner space of the receiving device and the spacing distance.

  • This paper reports on our development of a dual-mode transceiver for a CMOS high-rate Bluetooth system-onchip solution. The transceiver includes most of the radio building blocks such as an active complex filter, a Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK) demodulator, a variable gain amplifier (VGA), a dc offset cancellation circuit, a quadrature local oscillator (LO) generator, and an RF front-end. It is designed for both the normal-rate Bluetooth with an instantaneous bit rate of 1 Mb/s and the high-rate Bluetooth of up to 12 Mb/s. The receiver employs a dualconversion combined with a baseband dual-path architecture for resolving many problems such as flicker noise, dc offset, and power consumption of the dual-mode system. The transceiver requires none of the external image-rejection and intermediate frequency (IF) channel filters by using an LO of 1.6 GHz and the fifth order onchip filters. The chip is fabricated on a $6.5-mm^{2}$ die using a standard $0.25-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. Experimental results show an in-band image-rejection ratio of 40 dB, an IIP3 of -5 dBm, and a sensitivity of -77 dBm for the Bluetooth mode when the losses from the external components are compensated. It consumes 42 mA in receive ${\pi}/4-diffrential$ quadrature phase-shift keying $({\pi}/4-DQPSK)$ mode of 8 Mb/s, 35 mA in receive GFSK mode of 1 Mb/s, and 32 mA in transmit mode from a 2.5-V supply. These results indicate that the architecture and circuits are adaptable to the implementation of a low-cost, multi-mode, high-speed wireless personal area network.

  • In this paper, we describe a 900MHz CMOS RF transceiver using an ISM band for ZigBee applications. The architecture of the designed rx front-end, which consists of a low noise amplifier, a down-mixer, a programmable gain amplifier and a band pass filter. And the tx front-end, which consists of a band pass filter, a programmable gain amplifier, an up-mixer and a drive amplifier. A low-if topology is adapted for transceiver architecture, and the total current consumption is reduced by using a low power topology. Entire transceiver is verified by means of post-layout simulation and is implemented in 0.18um RF CMOS technology. The fabricated chip demonstrate the measured results of -92dBm minimum rx input level and 0dBm maximum tx output level. Entire power consumption is 32mW(@1.8VDD). Die area is $2.3mm{\times}2.5mm$ including ESD protection diode pads.

  • A single chip NFC transceiver supporting not only NFC active and passive mode but also 13.56MHz RFID reader and tag mode was designed and fabricated. The proposed NFC transceiver can operate as a RFID tag even without external power supply which has dual antenna structure for initiator and target. The area increment due to additional target antenna is negligible because the target antenna is constructed by using a shielding layer of initiator antenna. The analog front end circuit of the proposed NFC transceiver consists of a transmitter and receiver of reader/writer block supporting NFC initiator or RFID reader mode, and a tag circuit for target of passive NFC mode or RFID tag mode. The maximum baud rate of the proposed NFC device is 212kbps by using UART serial interface. The chip has been designed and fabricated using a Magnachip's $0.35{\mu}m$ double poly 4-metal CMOS process, and the effective area of the chip is 2200um by 3600um.
