An Integration Approach of Trajectory-Based Aviation Weather and Air Traffic Information for NARAE-Weather (나래웨더를 위한 궤적기반 항공기상 정보와 항공교통 정보의 통합 방안)

  • In support of the National ATM Reformation and Enhancement Plan (NARAE), a trajectory-based aviation weather service is under development through the NARAE-Weather project. Specifically, weather data presented in a standardized digital format facilitates the seamless integration of digital weather data with air traffic information. Thus, this paper introduces an approach that entails structuring numerical model data to integrate aviation weather information and flight trajectory data. The extraction results using structurally transformed data showed superior performance compared to the results extracted from the original data in terms of performance, and this research is poised to enhance the safety and efficiency of airline operations.

  • The real-time traffic data is generated continuous and unbounded stream data type while intelligent transport system (ITS) needs to provide various and high quality services by combining with spatial information. Traditional database techniques in ITS has shortage for processing dynamic real-time stream data and static spatial data simultaneously. In this paper, we design and implement an advanced traffic monitoring system (ATMS) with the integration of existed data stream management system (DSMS) and spatial DBMS using IntraMap. Besides, the developed ATMS can deal with the stream data of DSMS, the trajectory data of relational DBMS, and the spatial data of SDBMS concurrently. The implemented ATMS supports historical and one time query, continuous query and combined query. Application programmer can develop various intelligent services such as moving trajectory tracking, k-nearest neighbor (KNN) query and dynamic intelligent navigation by using components of the ATMS.

  • This study attempts at building an integrated GIS computing framework for evaluating space-time accessibility of an individual with the approach of time geography model. The proposed method is based on the integration of mobile GIS and object-relational spatio-temporal database. Three components are central to our system: ( i ) mobile GIS application that transmits spatio-temporal trajectory data of an individual; ( ii ) spatio-temporal database server that incorporates the time geography model; and (iii) geovisualization client that provides time geographic queries to the spatio-temporal database. As for the mobile GIS application, spatio-temporal trajectory data collected by GPS-PDA client is automatically transmitted to the database server through mobile data management middleware. The spatio-temporal database server implemented by extending a generic DBMS provides spatio-temporal objects, functions and query languages. The geovisualization client illustrates 3D visual results of the queries about space-time path. space-time prism and space-time accessibility. This study shows a method of integrating mobile GIS and DBMS for time geography application, and presents an appropriate spatio-temporal data model for evaluating space-time accessibility of an individual.

  • Satellite remote sensing data have been valuable tool for volcanic ash monitoring. In this study, we present the results of application of satellite remote sensing data for monitoring of volcanic ash for three major volcanic eruption cases (2008 Chait$\acute{e}$n, 2010 Eyjafjallaj$\ddot{o}$kull, and 2011 Shinmoedake volcanoes). Volcanic ash detection products based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) observation data using infrared brightness temperature difference technique were compared to the forward air mass trajectory analysis by the HYbrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. There was good correlation between MODIS volcanic ash image and trajectory lines after the volcanic eruptions, which support the feasibility of using the integration of satellite observed and model derived data for volcanic ash forecasting.

  • In this paper, the arc welding robot controller using a touch sensor and a arc sensor is presented. The controller is composed of robot controller parts for moving torch, and arc welding controller for welding and tracking. In the controller, an compensated data is generated to control robot trajectory and seam tracking by the arc sensor function. The data is obtained by integration of arc current. Experimental results are presented confirming the controller performance.

  • To analyze the motion of aircraft through computing the dynamics equations, true airspeed is essential for obtaining aerodynamic loads. Although the airspeed is measured by on-board instruments such as pitot tubes, measurement data are difficult to obtain for commercial flights because they include sensitive data about the airline operations. One of the commonly available trajectory data, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast data, provide aircraft's speed in the form of ground speed. The ground speed is a vector sum of the local wind velocity and the true airspeed. This paper present a method to estimate true airspeed by combining the trajectory, meteorological, and topology data available to the public. To integrate each data, we first matched the coordinate system and then unified the altitude reference to the mean sea level. We calculated the wind vector for all trajectory points by interpolating from the lower resolution grid of the meteorological data. Finally, we calculate the true airspeed from the ground speed and the wind vector. These processes were applied to several sample trajectories with corresponding meteorological data and the topology data, and the estimated true airspeeds are presented.

  • In this paper, we present multi-sensor data fusion for telematics application. Successful telematics can be realized through the integration of navigation and spatial information. The well-determined acquisition of vehicle's position plays a vital role in application service. The development of GPS is used to provide the navigation data, but the performance is limited in areas where poor satellite visibility environment exists. Hence, multi-sensor fusion including IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), GPS(Global Positioning System), and DMI (Distance Measurement Indicator) is required to provide the vehicle's position to service provider and driver behind the wheel. The multi-sensor fusion is implemented via algorithm based on Kalman filtering technique. Navigation accuracy can be enhanced using this filtering approach. For the verification of fusion approach, land vehicle test was performed and the results were discussed. Results showed that the horizontal position errors were suppressed around 1 meter level accuracy under simulated non-GPS availability environment. Under normal GPS environment, the horizontal position errors were under 40㎝ in curve trajectory and 27㎝ in linear trajectory, which are definitely depending on vehicular dynamics.

  • In this paper, Human-in-the-Loop (HiTL) simulations of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) operations in two different Air Traffic Management (ATM) concepts, conventional radar vectoring and Trajectory Based Operations (TBO), were performed to assess the impacts of RPAS integration in the future ATM environment. TBO concept maximizes the throughput by planning and sharing 4-D trajectories between pilots and controllers, and it is considered one of the key concepts to enable RPASs to operate with manned aircraft in congested airspaces. RPASs are characterized by having communication delay or temporary loss of communication. TBO capability was added to the integrated air traffic simulation system for this study, which was developed in the Inha University. HiTL simulations were performed by a trainee air traffic controller with three scenarios, and the data were analyzed using safety, efficiency, and controller workload metrics. The results suggest that TBO were effective in reducing delays and controller workload while maintaining the level of safety.

Computations of Droplet Impingement on Airfoils in Two-Phase Flow

  • The aerodynamic effects of leading-edge accretion can raise important safety concerns since the formulation of ice causes severe degradation in aerodynamic performance as compared with the clean airfoil. The objective of this study is to develop a numerical simulation strategy for predicting the particle trajectory around an MS-0317 airfoil in the test section of the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel and to investigate the impingement characteristics of droplets on the airfoil surface. In particular, predictions of the mean velocity and turbulence diffusion using turbulent flow solver and Continuous Random Walk method were desired throughout this flow domain in order to investigate droplet dispersion. The collection efficiency distributions over the airfoil surface in simulations with different numbers of droplets, various integration time-steps and particle sizes were compared with experimental data. The large droplet impingement data indicated the trends in impingement characteristics with respect to particle size ; the maximum collection efficiency located at the upper surface near the leading edge, and the maximum value and total collection efficiency were increased as the particle size was increased. The extent of the area impinged on by particles also increased with the increment of the particle size, which is similar as compared with experimental data.

Performance Evaluation of Smart Intersections for Emergency Response Time based on Integration of Geospatial and Incident Data

  • The major objective of this research is to evaluate performance of improved intersections for response time to emergency vehicle preemption. Smart technologies have been introduced to civil infrastructure systems for resilient communities. The technologies need to evaluate their effectiveness and feasibility to confirm their introduction. This research focuses on the performance of emergency vehicle preemption, represented by response time, when smart intersections are introduced in a community. The response time is determined by not only intersections but also a number of factors such as traffic, distance, road conditions, and incident types. However, the evaluation of emergency response has often ignored factors related to emergency vehicle routes. In this respect, this research synthetically analyzes geospatial and incident data using each route of emergency vehicle and conducts before-and-after evaluations. The changes in performance are analyzed by the impact of smart intersections on response time through Bayesian regression models. The result provides measures of the project's performance. This study will contribute to the body of knowledge on modeling the impacts of technology application and integrating heterogeneous data sets. It will provide a way to confirm and prove the effectiveness of introducing smart technologies to our communities.
