Autonomous driving technologies have been gradually improved for road traffic owing to the development of artificial intelligence. Since the truck platooning is beneficial in terms of the associated transporting expenses, the Connected-Automated Vehicle technology is rapidly evolving. The structural performance is, however, rarely investigated to capture the effect of truck platooning on civil infrastructures. In this study, the dynamic behavior of bridges under truck platooning was investigated, and the amplification factor of responses was estimated considering several parameters associated with the driving conditions. Artificial intelligence techniques were used to estimate the maximum response of the mid span of a bridge as the platooning vehicles passing, and the importance of the parameters was evaluated. The most suitable algorithm was selected by evaluating the consistency of the estimated displacement.

The aim of this study is to develop travel time estimation model by using Self-Organized Neural network(in brief, SON) algorithm. Travel time data based on vehicles equipped with GPS and number-plate matching collected from National road number 3 (between Jangji-IC and Gonjiam-IC), which is pilot section of National Highway Traffic Management System were employed. We found that the accuracies of travel time are related to location of detector, the length of road section and land-use properties. In this paper, we try to develop travel time estimation using SON to remedy defects of existing neural network method, which could not additional learning and efficient structure modification. Furthermore, we knew that the estimation accuracy of travel time is superior to optimum located detectors than based on existing located detectors. We can expect the results of this study will make use of location allocation of detectors in highway.

Premature failures in pavements are frequently reported due to rapid increasement in traffic volume, heavy vehicles, and high temperature in the summer. Based on this concept in mind, Korea Highway Corporation established the Test Road Operation Center to estimate the pavement performance. To evaluate the pavement performance effectively using the field data, wandering is an important topic in pavement analysis. In this study, portable wandering system was developed and analyzed to investigate the pavement responses due to the dynamic truck passes, and analyzed the wandering to dynamic load test. The test results revealed that the advantages of laser devices were noticeable compare to the other measuring ones. To understand the behavioral characteristics of pavements using the wandering measurement devices, dynamic truck tests were conducted in the field. Test results showed that the effects of wandering on asphalt pavement were significant. The data analysis using this wandering effect is considered as an important tool in performance analysis of asphalt concrete pavement.

A Basic experimental study for the development of vibration-power generation system from the vibration energy of urban infrastructure, such as a railroad, highway, and bridges, was carried out to harvest electricity from moving vehicles. Starting with the proposal of vibration power generator which converts vibration energy to an electric power by using self-induction technology, the research explains the basic concept of self-induction technology and the dynamic characteristics of a ibration power generator. Also, in order to analyze the correlation of an electromotive force from vibration power generator which depends on external force and vibration speeds, many indoor experiments with various variables were achieved. Based on the experimental results, a vibration power generator system's ability were analyzed. With those results, basic data of vibration power generator system to acquire the maximum available power was confirmed.

This study is performed to apply a standard to evaluate fire protection assessment for tunnel structures when a fire breaks out in the road tunnel. Recently, a number of road tunnels have been rapidly increased and fire risk also multiplyed according to extend tunnel length, due to natural features and environmentally-friendly road construction in Korea. But we have not yet been prescribed appropriate time-temperature curve for tunnel fire. Therefore, we presented fire design model and investigated time-temperature curve proposed by a foreign country considering traffic, a kinds of vehicles which are a basis of heat rate. At the end, Hydrocarbon modified curve applied as design fire model by using numerical analysis and presented design fire model and examined the effects of tunnel structures.

In order to maintain the safety of the airspace with ever increasing traffic volume, it is necessary to thoroughly analyze the collision risk with the current data. In this study, collision risk analysis was conducted using Detect and Avoid (DAA) Well-Clear (DWC) metrics, risk induces developed for the DAA systems of unmanned aerial vehicles. All flights in year 2019 that flew within the Incheon Flight Information Region (FIR) boundary were analyzed using the recorded Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast(ADS-B) data. High risk regions as well as trends by airports and seasons were identified. The results indicate that the risk is higher around the congested area near Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport. Seasonally, the risk was highest in August that coincides with the Summer vacation period. The result will be useful for the baseline data for various aviation safety enhancement activities such as revision of routes and procedures and training of the field specialists.

Due to the rapid economic growth within the nation, the quality of life of individuals have improved dramatically. The scope of living activities of individuals have also extended, resulting in a rapidly increasing demand for automobiles. The number of vehicles registered in Korea is rapidly increasing and will reach 188.71 million as of December 2012. Compared to the registered residents of 50.94 million provided by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the registered population reflects about 4 people per every automobile. Due to the high demands for vehicles, the demands for parking lots in collective housing and businesses are also increasing. In reality, the current state of expansion of parking lots are underground, due to the limited available space on ground level. Specifically, the slope of a parking lot cannot exceed 17% linear slope and 14% curved slope according to the 'parking lot laws', however studies show that the driver feels at risk for safety when stopped on the parking ramp while driving in the parking lot. This study seeks to examine the suitability of parking lot ramps, concerning the safety aspects of the driver. First, the ramp type was categorized as linear or curved, then test drives were performed based on variations of slopes, slant distances, directions and points. A survey was administered to the driver after the completion of the test drive, in order to element design for an ideal ramp. In the case of curved ramp, the results of the estimate suggests a counterclockwise, slope at a maximum of 12% incline. The maximum slope for a linear ramp was analyzed to be between 13~14%, suggesting that slope greater than 15% need to be eliminated. In conclusion, it is anticipated that the element design parking ramp reported in this study will help to serve as a reference for future parking lot related guidelines, and provide cost effective traffic safety mechanisms in future parking lot businesses to follow.
In this paper, we developed DNL(Dynamic Network Loading) model based on Moving cell theory to analyze the dynamic characteristics of traffic flow in congested network. In this paper vehicles entered into link at same interval would construct one cell, and the cells moved according to Cell following rule. In the past researches relating to DNL model a continuous single link is separated into two sections such as running section and queuing section to describe physical queue so that various dynamic states generated in real link are only simplified by running and queuing state. However, the approach has some difficulties in simulating various dynamic flow characteristics. To overcome these problems, we present Moving cell theory which is developed by combining Car following theory and Lagrangian method mainly using for the analysis of air pollutants dispersion. In Moving cell theory platoons are represented by cells and each cell is processed by Cell following theory. This type of simulation model is firstly presented by Cremer et al(1999). However they did not develop merging and diverging model because their model was applied to basic freeway section. Moreover they set the number of vehicles which can be included in one cell in one interval so this formulation cant apply to signalized intersection in urban network. To solve these difficulties we develop new approach using Moving cell theory and simulate traffic flow dynamics continuously by movement and state transition of the cells. The developed model are played on simple network including merging and diverging section and it shows improved abilities to describe flow dynamics comparing past DNL models.
Traffic accident fatalities in Korea in 2016 was 4,292 and 1,732 cases were deaths of elderly people. In spite of this, the researches on behaviors of the elderly when crossing roads, are rather limited. The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze road crossing behavior characteristics of the elderly, when crossing roads, especially focusing on the characteristics of pedestrians and vehicles. Cross-sectional data was collected from six different sites in two regions and the following results was identified. First, at road crossings, 528 cases(84.3%) out of 626 conflict situations of the elderly and 303 cases(63.3%) out of 478 conflict situations of the non-elderly pedestrians were found to be dangerous, respectively. The elderly tend to face a statistically significant risk of 3.11 times higher than that of non-elderly people. Second, 519 cases(82.9%) of jaywalking occurred in 626 conflict cases of the elderly and 375 cases(78.5%) of jaywalking in 478 conflict events of non-elderly persons, which indicates the elderly's 1.34 times higher trend compared with the non-elderly's. Third, the pedestrian safety margin (PSM) analysis showed that the PSM of the elderly and the non-elderly were 3.33 seconds and 4.04 seconds respectively, which is 17.5% high. Fourth, the difference in pedestrian safety interval was examined by dividing the speed of approaching vehicle into less than 30km/h, above 30km/h and less than 50km/h, and over 50km/h. There was no significant difference between the PSM of coming vehicles with the speed less than 30km/h and the PSM of approaching with the speed 30km/h~50km/h, but the conflicts with vehicle of the speed above 50km/h show significantly lower PSM than with vehicle speed of 30km/h~50km/h. Finally, when the risk threshold is set to less than 2.5 seconds, the analysis shows that older pedestrians tend to cross roads dangerously 1.59~2.53 times than younger pedestrians. The results set forth here can be used as a basis for constructing the elderly safety measures at present and a potential basis for autonomous vehicle safety application in the future for solving the issue of the difference in crossing behavior between elderly and non-elderly pedestrians.

Preliminary feasibility study on Busan metro line #1 in Yangsan line (Nopo-Bukjeong) depending on active volume of mass transportation between Yangsan city and Busan city was conducted. As the study concluded that it's valid, the necessity to establish the metro railroad network connecting to Busan, Ulsan and Gyeongnam Province is demanded to improve the transportation issues in Ungsang area vulnerable to metro service and to drive the balanced development between metropolitan cities. In addition, the volume of transportation depending on methods in target areas and road traffic assignment are surveyed to put a stress on the necessity to establish the metro railroad network. As the demand of transportation for alternative lines is predicted, the budget and benefits for construction for each alternative line set for the rough economic analysis depending on traffic volume for each method and traffic assignment results. The total project budget necessary for construction of proposal line #1 set as effective one among target three lines in this project is calculated in 794.32 billion won. Construction accounts for the most expensive in expenses for project and contingency allowances, purchases for vehicles and collateral expense are followed in orders. However, compensation for lands is not counted. In particular, according to economic analysis in proposal #1, ratio of benefit/cost (B/C) is 0.584, net present value (NPV) is -217.47 billion won, the internal rate of return (IRR) is analyzed in 0.604 %. At the current stage, it is not economically feasible, but the B/C is 0.737 in long-term upon construction of Yangsan line between Wolpheong and Yongdang which is proposal line #3. Therefore, when Busan metro basic plan is reorganized to aim the benefit of residents in Ungsang area vulnerable to the metro service, we think it must be necessary to establish the metro railroad network connecting to Busan-Yangsan-Ulsan which is proposal line #2 by extending the existing Sinjeong line and including this task line in high-ranked plan related to metro railroad.
