Objective: To understand the characteristic of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and study the traditional Korean medicine (TKM)-based strategies or therapeutics for them. Methods: A male patient with NASH was treated with only Oriental therapies, and then the clinical outcome was evaluated by serum biochemical parameters and radiographs. Result: The clinical and biochemical values of the patient fluctuated over three years according to the treatments and cessation of herbal medicines. Conclusion: NASH or NAFLD are now prevalent and these disorders could be targets of TKM, and this case report would provide useful information.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) on hyperprolactinemia Methods: The patient in this case was a 26-year-old female. The patient was diagnosed as hyperprolactinemia with oligomenorrhea a month ago. We treated by Ickibohyoultang-gami and evaluated treatment effect by serum prolactin and basal body temperature. Results: After treatment, the Hyperprolactinemia value reduced and returned normal approach. And disorder of menstruation and basal body temperature became stable. Conclusions: TKM treatment is effective in patients with Hyperprolactinemia and disorder of menstruation.

Objectives : Our study aims to provide a collaborative Internet terminology dictionary like Wikipedia, where about 30,000 concept terminologies with respect to traditional Korean medicine (TKM) are shared and TKM experts can edit the terminologies. Methods : The concept terminologies have been collected and refined for three years by the terminology management system, a custom-made software built upon the Oracle database, where each terminology is divided and normalized into one or more tables. The operation of Wikipedia depends on MediaWiki, a free and open source wiki software built upon the MySQL database. The database schema of our terminology management system is different from that of MediaWiki so that MediaWiki cannot used as our terminology dictionary. Thus, we propose a way to share and edit TKM terminologies with wiki-like user interface. Results : We devise a new terminology dictionary system to search and edit terminology upon the database of the terminology management system. The online terminology dictionary of TKM has the user interface and functions which is similar to Wikipedia to support collaborative works. Conclusions : Wikipedia is operated on MediaWiki which is can be downloaded and used freely under the GNU General Public License. However, there occur problems to use MediaWiki upon the legacy system. Thus, other wiki projects start, they should be considered.

Objectives : The aim of this report was to evaluate the effects of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) in a patient suffering from abducens palsy. Methods : Acupuncture was applied to Left Sojangjungkyuk(BL66, SI2, GB41, SI3) for 15 minutes in all visits. Herbal medicine (Banggihwanggi-Tang) was administered regularly three times a day after each meal. Results : Patient's main symptoms remarkably improved after treatment. Conclusions : TKM therapy may be helpful in the treatment of ocular abnormalities related to abducens palsy.

Since Traditional Korean medicine (TKM) doctors use various knowledge systems during treatment, diagnosis results may differ for each TKM doctor. However, it is difficult to explain all the reasons for the diagnosis because TKM doctors use both explicit and implicit knowledge. In this study, an upgraded random forest (RF)-based evaluation tool was proposed to extract clinical knowledge of TKM doctors. Also, it was confirmed to what extent the professor's clinical knowledge was delivered to the trainees by using the evaluation tool. The data used to construct the evaluation tool were targeted at 106 people who visited the Sasang Constitutional Department at Kyung Hee University Korean Medicine Hospital at Gangdong. For explicit knowledge extraction, four TKM doctors were asked to express the importance of symptoms as scores. In addition, for implicit knowledge extraction, importance score was confirmed in the RF model that learned the patient's symptoms and the TKM doctor's constitutional determination results. In order to confirm the delivery of clinical knowledge, the similarity of symptoms that professors and trainees consider important when discriminating constitution was calculated using the Jaccard coefficient. As a result of the study, our proposed tool was able to successfully evaluate the clinical knowledge of TKM doctors. Also, it was confirmed that the professor's clinical knowledge was delivered to the trainee. Our tool can be used in various fields such as providing feedback on treatment, education of training TKM doctors, and development of AI in TKM.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) on climacteric syndrome. And we wanted that climateric symptoms were measured objectively and diagnosed definitely using climacteric index. Methods: Two patients complained climacteric symptoms. We treated them by TKM, and evaluated the progress of symptoms by Kupperman's index. And then We compared climacteric symptoms before treatment with one after treatment by Kupperman's index. Results: After TKM treatment, the climacteric symptoms were improved and mean score of K upperman's index was reduced (one reduces from 77 to 53, the other reduces from 65 to 25). Conculsion: TKM treatment is effective on climacteric syndrome. And Kupperman's index would be valid to measure for treatment's effect of climacteric syndrome.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the effect of TKM (Traditional Korean Medicine) to abdominal pain after laparoscopic gynecological surgery(LGS). Methods: 10 patients who visited the department of gynecology in OO medical center from 1st August 2007 to 31st December 2008 with abdominal pains after laparoscopic operation. They complained abdominal pain and other pains such as back pain, shoulder pain and vaginal bleeding etc. We treated patients with herb medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion treatment. The progress of signs and symptoms was evaluated by checking the change of visual analog scale(VAS). Results: The mean age was 45.1 years(range 38-49), parity 2(0-3) and previous abdominal surgery case was 5. The mean of hospital admitting day was 20 days(range 9- 51) and taken for reducing VAS 10 to 3 were 10 days(range 4-24). After taking TKM, patient's signs and symptoms were alleviated or resolved and Hb, Hct were increased. Conclusion: After laparoscopic gynecological surgery, patients had taken pain such as abdominal pain, shoulder pain, back pain etc. TKM treatment is effective on the recovery after laparoscopic surgery.

Background : I investigated clinical research methodology of Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) for treatment of lung cancer with Evidence Based Medicine(EBM) approach. Methods : I conducted the internet search of National Central Library, the National Assembly Library, Korea Education & Research Information Service, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information for Korean theses and papers, and MEDLINE for the outside articles. Conclusion : In addition to outcomes of clinical trial, abundant clinician's experience and patients' preference are also considered. Pragmatic trials and quasi-experimental trials are better than clinical trials to plan clinical design of TKM for lung cancer and appropriate endpoints includes overall survival, disease-free survival, patient reporting outcome.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of TKM to Rhumatitis Arthritis after parturition and show the importance of recuperation after parturition. Methods: The patient was a 33-year-old woman who complains arthralgia, edema and sense of coldness after her third parturition. The patient was treated by Herb medicine, Acupuncture treatment, Moxa treatment and Physical Treatment. And the progress of symptoms was evaluated by cheking the change of VAS, and inspecting the DITI. Results: The Pain and edema have declined. After discharge, she got definite diagnosis as Rhumatitis Arthritis. But We already estimated it from the results of serum test. So we had treated the patience with TKM and we could explain the prognosis. We regulated the pain and edema successfully at the acute phase. And the patient could take care of herself, she didn't play her disease down as a simple symptoms of parturition. Conclusion: TKM is expected to have positive effects on Rheumatic arthritis with quick onset after parturition.

CREST syndrome is a form of limited cutaneous scleroderma that occurs only in certain parts of the body, such as the skin of the hands and face. CREST refers to the five main features of the syndrome: calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia. Currently, there is no standard treatment for CREST syndrome, and there have been no studies of the use of traditional Korean medicine (TKM) for this disease. This study describes the effects of Keumsuyukun-jeon on CREST syndrome. The patient in this case had typical clinical symptoms of CREST syndrome. These symptoms improved within a relatively short period of receiving the TKM treatment. The results of Anti-centromere antibody (AI) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (mg/L) also improved.
