  • Since the Six Sigma strategy was first introduced to Motorola in 1987, it has been taken as an important business strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of leading companies in the global competitive environment. To keep growing and thriving, modern companies need to develop new businesses and find new applications while keeping existing ones on track. This situation necessitates a more effective way of discovering an optimal scenario in a business. In this paper, we propose a Business for Six Sigma (BFSS) road-map to create new businesses. BFSS consists of five macro phases: define, identify, analyze, evaluate, and implement. We also provide an example of F electronics, a Korean electronics component manufacturer, which actually applied the BFSS road-map to analyze marketability, technological plausibility and economic potential/success in connection with its new product development.

  • In the grand alliance (GA) HDTV receiver, a coherent detection is empolyed for coherent demodulation of vestigial side-band (VSB) signal by using frequency and phaselocked loop(FPLL) operating on the pilot carrier. Additional phase tracking loop (PTL) employed to track out phase noise that has not been removed by the FPLL in theGA system. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for phase detection which utilizes a weighting function. The simplest implementation of the proposed algorithm using te sign of the Q channel component can be tractable by imposing a phase detection gain to the loop gain. It is obserbed that the propsoed algorithm has a robust characteristic against the performance of the digital filters used for Q channel estimation. A second goal of this paper is to introduce a gain control algorithm for the PTL in order to provide an effective implementation of the proposed phase detection algorithm. And we design the PTL through the realization of the simplified digital filter for H/W reduction. The proposed algorithms and the designed PTL are evaluated by computer simulation. In spite of using the simplified H/W structure, simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform the coventional PTL algorithms in the phase detection and tracking performance.

  • Real-Time object tracking has emerged as an important component in several application areas including machine vision. surveillance. Human-Computer Interaction. image-based control. and so on. And there has been developed various algorithms for a long time. But in many cases. they have showed limited results under uncontrolled situation such as illumination changes or cluttered background. In this paper. we present a novel. computationally efficient algorithm for tracking human face robustly under illumination changes and cluttered backgrounds. Previous algorithms usually defines color model as a 2D membership function in a color space without consideration for illumination changes. Our new algorithm developed here. however. constructs a 3D color model by analysing plenty of images acquired under various illumination conditions. The algorithm described is applied to a mobile head-eye robot and experimented under various uncontrolled environments. It can track an human face more than 100 frames per second excluding image acquisition time.

  • Edge detection is a key component for many modern computer vision applications. While it is certainly not the only way to identify an object, or track a feature, it can be one of the most convenient if it is done quickly and consistently. Many algorithms proposed is applied to gray level images. But. there are limits in method using only intensity information, so, many researchers has try to done research about using color information. In this paper, we propose the new edge detection method usign color information, implement the widely used algorithms and compared with them in performance. In result of experiment, we show that the proposed algorithm have better result in fine detail and shaded region of image.

  • Anchor bolt in baseplate fastenings on the slab track is an important component to conform placing and safety of fastenings. Due to the way of load transmission control of fastenings, sometimes anchor bolt has to be applied lateral load. So we have to take care for it when we design. Especially, in the case of anchor bolt which is applied loads repeatedly, we have to consider fatigue failure. If parts of machine are damaged in static loads, stress will exceed the yield strength. So parts could be transformed largely. Therefore because they are visible to the naked eyes, we can replace parts before failure. However, because fatigue failure that are invisible to the naked eyes happen unexpectedly, it's very dangerous. To make a reasonable design of anchor bolts, we will analyze them by changing diameters of anchor bolt, quality of insert, initial gap between anchor bolt and insert, the presence of insert, etc. which affect the stresses of anchor bolts. We can get the maximum and minimum amplitude of stress through the modified Goodman diagram or Smith diagram which represents limit of all strengths and stress components to the average stress. We also tried to show the way of examining the expected th life of anchor bolt briefly through considering above.

  • An analysis method of trajectory prediction has been suggested and the developed trajectory prediction module, which is an important functional component of the Arrival Manager (AMAN) of Jeju airport, has been tested by applying the suggested method. The objective of this method is to improve prediction performance of the trajectory prediction module. The trajectory prediction module predicts the trajectories based on the real-time track data and flight plans. Therefore, the suggested analysis method includes the simulation framework which is based on real-time playback, recording, and graphic display systems for testing. Besides, the definition of time error, which is a important index for the time based scheduling system, such as AMAN, is included in the suggested analysis method. An example of arrival time prediction accuracy improvement through the suggested analysis method has also been presented.

  • This paper presents a new method of designing digital controller based on closed-loop identification of a pulse width modulation (PWM) converter system. We consider the control system structure which is composed of both current control loop and voltage control loop. The current controller can be designed independently of voltage loop. Whereas voltage controller can not do easily due to the PWM switching component which is nonlinear in nature. Furthermore, the control objective of inner loop is to track the sine wave of 60 Hz, but the outer loop shall maintain the constant DC voltage irrespective to load change. To systematically design outer loop controller, we propose a method finding linear approximate model of the nonlinear inner loop part including current controller by closed loop identification. Based on the identified model, we show that a simple digital voltage controller can be directly designed and it has good performance.

  • Micro Hotplate (MHP) is the key component in micro-sensors, particularly gas sensors. Indeed, in metal oxide gas sensors MOX, micro-heater is used as a hotplate in order to control the temperature of the sensing layer which should be in the requisite temperature range over the heater area, so as to detect the resistive changes as a function of varying concentration of different gases. Hence, their design is a very important aspect. In this paper, we have presented the design and simulation results of a meander micro heater based on three different materials - platinum, titanium and tungsten. The dielectric membrane size is 1.4 mm × 1.6 mm with a thickness of 1.4 μm. Above the membrane, a meander heating film was deposed with a thickness of 100 nm. In order to optimize the geometry, a comparative study by simulating two different heater thicknesses, then two inter track widths has also been presented. Power consumption and temperature distribution were determined in the micro heater´s structure over a supply voltage of 5, 6, and 7 V.

  • The sensor/actuator active sensor diagnostics procedure, where the sensors/actuators are confirmed to be functioning properly during operation, is a critical component to successfully complete the structural health monitoring (SHM) process with large numbers of active sensors typically installed in a structure. The basis of this process is to track the changes in the capacitive value of piezoelectric materials, which shows up in measured admittance. Due to the temperature dependent nature of piezoelectric materials, we investigated the effects of temperature variations on sensor diagnostic process. The effect of temperature variations found to be remarkable, modifying the measured capacitive values significantly. In addition we analyzed the effect of bonding agents between a PZT patch and a host structure. This paper summarizes considerations needed to develop such sensor diagnostic processes, experimental procedures and results, and additional issues that can be used as guidelines for future investigations.

  • This paper proposed a structural time-varying damage detection method by using synchrosqueezing wavelet transform. The instantaneous frequencies of a structure with time-varying damage are first extracted using the synchrosqueezing wavelet transform. Since the proposed synchrosqueezing wavelet transform is invertible, thus each individual component can be reconstructed and the modal participation factor ratio can be extracted based on the amplitude of the analytical signals of the reconstructed individual components. Then, the new time-varying damage index is defined based on the extracted instantaneous frequencies and modal participation factor ratio. Both free and forced vibrations of a classical Duffing nonlinear system and a simply supported beam structure with abrupt and linear time-varying damage are simulated. The proposed synchrosqueezing wavelet transform method can successfully extract the instantaneous frequencies of the damaged structures under free vibration or vibration due to earthquake excitation. The results also show that the defined time-varying damage index can effectively track structural time-varying damage.
