The purpose of this study was to investigate the basic materials for enhancing the professionalism of 51 infant/toddler teachers through in-depth interview about the actual condition of child care centers. The results were as follows: First, the infant/toddler teachers got less credits of young child care and education subjects than day care teachers did. The current criteria for qualification of infant/toddler teachers was not appropriate for providing the child care services. An efficient and substantial curriculum must be designed to facilitate the day care services for infant/toddler teachers. Second, the infant/toddler teachers recognized that their roles were similar to child care teachers. The curriculum and practice must encourage and nurture the characters, beliefs, and dispositions of infant/toddler teachers. Third, it is necessary to review the various problems to enhance the professionalism of infant/toddler teachers. Several suggestions for enhancing the professionalism are discussed.
Objective: This study tried to find out if a teacher education program that supports professionalism for beginning child care teachers in toddler classes is effective in professionalism, self-respect, and efficacy in teaching. Methods: The study subjects were 40 beginning child care teachers in toddler classes teaching in day care centers in Seoul, Incheon, and Gwangmyeong Gyeonggi-do. They were divided into an experimental group (20 teachers) and a comparative group (20 teachers). The collected data were applied to the SPSS 22.0 program. To find homogeneity of the two groups, a t-test was conducted. To analyze an intergroup difference, ANCOVA was conducted in the way of setting a pre-test score as a covariate. Results: The experimental group which participated in the program showed more positive effects than the comparative group in terms of professionalism, self-respect, and efficacy in teaching. Conclusion/Implications: Based on the results of this study, the program is expected to be meaningful in the field of early childhood education, and to lay the foundation for beginning child care teachers in toddler classes to become experts in their field.
The purpose of this study was to provide a better understanding of prospective teachers' experiences during their toddler educaring practicum and what the meanings of their experiences are. A narrative study on practicum experiences was conducted with four junior students who major in early childhood education in A university in Seoul. The experiences of prospective teachers in daycare centers for toddler were diverse. Such diverse experiences allowed teachers to find the meaning of the relationship between teacher and toddler and to learn what being a teacher was like. And they showed positive changes in their attitude toward practicum and becoming toddler care and education teachers following improved understanding about the lives and development of toddlers and care-giving and teaching skills. The meaning of toddler educaring practicum was explained as building justification for existence and essential identity through continuous self-reflection, and experiencing happiness of caring and teaching toddlers. During the practice, they also learned that teachers in charge of toddlers should understand their lives, provide child friendly and stable environments, and be receptive and sensitively respond to them according to their needs and developmental levels. Student teachers realized that their role was to give loving care and to have sincere concern about the lives of toddlers.
This research aimed to analyze the quality of center-based infant/toddler programs in Korea. Scale for infant and toddler programs divide accreditation standards into 4 areas(physical environment, curriculum, health care, management system) with 60 standards. Standards can be divided into basic criteria and general criteria. The subjects are 149 day care centers(44 infant day care centers and 105 day care centers), and raters(teachers or principal) assessed the quality of each item on a 5-point Likert scale. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Self-evaluation result have marked 3.67 as average(range : 2.32~4.90), which barely meets basic criteria level. 2) Physical environment area has received worst score(3.41) and Health care area has received best score(3.92). 3) Each standard's score indicate the quality of infant/toddler care program: Feed care(4.29), Affectionate teacher-infant interaction(4.14) were highly rated while Nature environment/anmal/plant(2.75) and Teacher's facilities(2.74) were rated low. 4) Some variation factors showed differences in the qualitative level; number of child, education level of principal.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of toddler's temperament and toddler-teacher relationship on their peer interaction, focusing on gender differences. A total of 221 toddlers(122 boys and 99 girls) attending 16 child care centers in South Korea participated in this study. Each toddler was observed during a free-play period in the classroom over 4 sessions of 5 minutes, so a total of 20 minutes was measured. Two observers scored recorded observation scenes with two peer interaction criteria, including interaction initiation and interaction participation level. The main results of this study are as follows: First, there was a signigicant gender difference in peer interaction and toddler's temperament and toddler-teacher relationship. Second, the factor of toddler-teacher relationship significantly predicted the boys' peer interaction, while for the girls, the significant predictor was intentional control of temperamental factors. Further, implications for different approaches according to the gender difference of the affecting factor on toddlers' peer interaction have been discussed.
Early Head Start (EHS) can provide services to a child and family from pre-birth until the child is three years old. Services are comprehensive, intensive, individualized and flexible according to child and family needs, and integrated with community service delivery systems. The local program designs and operations were developed and carried out within the framework of the Head Start Revised Performance Standards, which included specific provisions for services to pregnant women, infants and toddlers and emphasized prevention, early intervention, safety, and health education. As with preschool Head Start, EHS programs are required to make available 10 percent of their enrollment for infants and toddlers with disabilities as defined by Part C regulations of the state in which the program operated. Quality child care has become a priority for EHS. A majority of EHS children need child care, and the quality is important to their development. An evaluation of EHS in 17 programs selected from the first program cohorts showed that the program had significant and positive impacts on a wide range of parent and child dimensions, some with implications for children's later school success. Among the issues for policy attention identified by American EHS for the Korean system are: - The need to create a comprehensive infant/toddler care system - The need to address access of teachers for young children - The need to improve quality.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among toddler's symbolic play level, mother's responsiveness and verbal interaction. The subjects were 56 pairs of 24-29 months old toddlers and their mothers. The toddler's symbolic play level was classified using categories by Gowen(1995). The mother's verbal interaction was coded during a 10-minute-free play session with her toddler using Caldera, Huston, and O'Brien's(1989) categories. PICCOLO(The Parenting Interactions with Child Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes) by Roggman, Cook, Innocenti, Jump, Norman, & Christiansen(2009) was used to investigate the mother's responsiveness. While the mothers played with their toddlers during a 10-minute-free play session, their interaction were videotaped. The data were analyzed by means, t-test, and correlations. The results of the study were as follows: First, the mean levels of the toddler's symbolic play were in level 3, 'the pretending others'. Also girls spent more symbolic play time with mothers than boys. Second, mothers' responsiveness was generally high in free play with their toddlers. Mothers frequently used 'questions' 'comments' and 'fantasy statements'. Mothers with girls used more 'questions' than mothers with boys. Third, there was a significant relationship among toddler's symbolic play level, mother's responsiveness and verbal interaction. Maternal responsiveness and 'fantasy statements' were positively related with the mean level, and the frequency of play. The 'questions' and 'answers' were also related with symbolic play level and frequency. But 'praise' was negatively related with symbolic play frequency. In conclusion, this study suggested that toddler's symbolic play level was related with mother's responsiveness and verbal interaction during free play.
