The results are summarized as what follows: 1) The modeling of thin beams, which is a continuous system, into a two DOF system yields satisfactory results for the chaotic vibrations. 2) The concept of "natural forcing function" derived from the eigenfunction of the bifurcation mode is very useful for the natural responses of the system. 3) Among the perturbation techniques, HBM is a good estimate for the response when the geometry of motion is known. 4) It is known that there exist periodic solutions of coupled mode response for somewhat large damping and forcing amplitude, as well as weak damping and forcing. 5) The route-to-chaos related with lateral instability in thin beams is composed of period-doubling and quasiperiodic process and finally follows discontinuous period-doubling process. 6) The chaotic vibrations are verified by using Poincare maps, FFT's, time responses, trajectories in the configuration space, and the very powerful technique Lyapunov characteristics exponents.exponents.
Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. In our laboratory, there have been a series of experimental investigations on the nasal airflow in normal, abnormal, and deformed nasal cavity models cavity models by PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this time normal and several deformed nasal cavity models, which simulate surgical operation, Turbinectomy, are investigated numerically by the FVM general purpose code and PIV analysis. The comparisons of these results are appreciated. Dense CT data and careful treatment of model surface under the ENT doctor's advice provide more sophisticated cavity models. The Davis (LaVision Co.) code is used for PIV flow analysis. Average and RMS distributions have been obtained for inspirational and expirational nasal airflows in the normal and deformed nasal cavities.

Two-dimensional lid-driven closed flows within square cavity were studied numerically for four Reynolds numbers : $10^4$, 3$\times10^4$, 5$\times10^4$ and 7.5$\times10^4$. A convective difference scheme to maintain the same spatial accurary by irregular grid correction is adopted by applying the interior division principle. Grid number is $80\times80$and its minimum size is about 1/400 of the cavity height. At Re=$10^4$, periodic migration of small eddies appearing in corner separation region and its temporal sinusoidal fluctuation are represented. At three higher Reynolds numbers(3$\times10^4$, 5$\times10^4$ and 7.5$\times10^4$), an organizing structure of four consecutive vorticles at two lower corners is revealed from time-mean flow patterns. But, instantaneous flow characteristics show very random unsteady fluctuation mainly due to the interaction between rotating shed vortices and stationary eddies within the corners.

The characteristics of a pulsating flow field from a heated block representing heat-dissipating electronic component in a channel have been numerically investigated. At the channel inlet a pulsating sinusoidal flow is imposed. The Reynolds number based on the channel height (H) is fixed at Re=500, and the forcing frequency is varied in the range of $0\leqSt\leq2$. Numerical results on the time-dependent flow field are obtained and averaged over a cycle of pulsation. The effect of the important governing parameters such as the Strouhal number is investigated in detail. The results indicate that the recirculating flow behind the block is substantially affected by the pulsation frequency. To characterize the periodic vortex shedding due to the inflow pulsation, numerical flow visualizations are carried out.
Partial Discharge(PD) pulses propagate in gas insulated substation(GIS) with rise time shorter than one nanosecond. Therefore, Ultra high frequency(UHF) couplers which have ultra wide band(UWB) characteristics from hundreds of MHz to several GHz are desirable for the detection of the PB pulses in GIS. In this paper, the authors proposed a log-periodic antenna for GIS PD detection. Various parameters of the coupler such as frequency bandwidth, coupler gain, radiation pattern, coupler geometry were considered through the simulations and the experiments together.
There are many studies about submerged structures or porous wave absorbers to decrease damage of coast and structures. Submerged structures and porous wave absorber are decreasing energy of incoming wave by reflecting or dissipation with changing depth or with porous rubble mound. This study addresses the reflection and transmission of long wave from a trapezoidal breakwater and a vertical porous wave absorber at the same time. A systematic shape transfer is derived to determine wave reflection and transmission. And periodic solutions are matched at the slope and the front face of the absorber by assuming continuity of pressure and mass. The transmission coefficient is determined as a function of parameters describing the incoming waves, transmitting waves through the trapezoidal breakwater and the absorber characteristics.

In this paper, battery charging and discharging circuit with a single voltage power supply is proposed. The proposed circuit has the separated current path and charging-monitoring sequence control scheme. In the charging sequence, the proposed 2-level comparator combined with control signal of the micro-processor can control the constant charging current to protect the over current of the battery. Furthermore, the proposed circuit uses a periodic main power switch control to detect the discharging characteristics to estimate the approximated battery life-time. In the experiments, the proposed emergency power supply for emergency call system has 89% efficiency with 98% power factor. And the proposed sequence control scheme is well operated in the designed emergency power system.
Distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon of different characteristics were formed to determine their optical constants in the visible wavelength range using a periodic square wave current between low and high current densities. The surface and cross-sectional SEM images of distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon were obtained using a cold field emission scanning electron microscope. The surface image of distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon indicates that the distributions of pores are even. The cross-sectional image illustrates that the multilayer of distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon exhibits a depth of few microns and applying of square current density during the etching process results two distinct refractive indices in the contrast. Distributed Bragg reflector porous silicon exhibited a porosity depth profile that related directly to the current-time profile used in etch. Its free-standing film was obtained by applying an electro-polishing current.
In wireless personal area networks (WPANs), the successful design of channel time allocation algorithm is a key factor in guaranteeing the various quality of service (QoS) requirements for the stringent real-time constraints of multimedia services. In this paper we propose a channel time allocation algorithm for achieving a high quality transmission and high channel error tolerance of MPEG stream in the IEEE 802.15.3 high-rate wireless PANs. Our algorithm exploits the characteristics of MPEG stream. When a new MPEG stream arrives, a DEV models it by the traffic envelope and delivers the traffic envelope to the piconet coordinator (PNC) along with the channel time request. The PNC performs channel time allocation according to the envelope. Performance of the proposed scheme is investigated by simulation and analysis. Our results show that compared to conventional scheme, the proposed scheme is very effective and provides a good performance under typical channel error conditions.

One of the important characteristics of the response of nonlinear systems is the existence of subharmonic resonances. When some conditions in parameter space are satisfied. It is possible even in the presence of damping for a periodically excited nonlinear system to possess a response which is the combination of a contribution at the excitation frequency and a component at the system natural frequency. The system natural frequency being a submultiple of the excitation frequency implies that the resulting response is a subharmonic oscillation. In general, there also co-exists, for the system, a response at the excitation frequency, and initial conditions determine which of the steady-state responses is achieved in an experiment or a numerical simulation. In single-degree-of-freedom systems with harmonic excitation, depending on the type of the nonlinearity, e.g., cubic or quadratic the frequency of subharmonic response is respectively, one-third or one-half of that of the excitation frequency. Although subharmonic resonance is one of the principal characteristics of a nonlinear system the subharmonic responses of structures in the presence of internal resonances have been studied very rarely. In this work, we consider subharmonic responses in the two-mode approximation of the plate equations. It is assumed that the two modes are in one-to-one internal resonance. Constant and periodic steady-state solutions of the averaged equations are studied. Finally, the results of direct time integration of the original equations of motion are presented and compared with those obtained from the averaged equations.
