The sensitivities of eigenvalues to the change of element thickness have been calculated for beams in the paper. For a cantilever beam the sensitivities fluctuate more for higher modes. When the thickness of the element near the fixed end increases, the eigenvalues for all modes increase. On the other hand, increasing of the thickness of the element at the tip decreases the eigenvalues for all modes. For a simply supported beam the sensitivities fluctuate more for higher modes, which is the same phenomenon as for a cantilever beam. The sensitivities are always positive for all modes

This paper presents the results of a feasibility study on an impedance-based damage detection technique using thickness modes of piezoelectric (PZT) patches for steel structures. It is newly proposed to analyze the changes of the impedances of the thickness modes (frequency range > 1 MHz) at the PZT based on its resonant frequency shifts rather than those of the lateral modes (frequency range > 20 kHz) at the PZT based on its root mean square (RMS) deviations, since the former gives more significant variations in the resonant frequency shifts of the signals for identifying localities of small damages under the same measurement condition. In this paper, firstly, a numerical analysis was performed to understand the basics of the NDE technique using the impedance using an idealized 1-D electro-mechanical model consisting of a steel plate and a PZT patch. Then, experimental studies were carried out on two kinds of structural members of steel. Comparisons have been made between the results of crack detections using the thickness and lateral modes of the PZT patches.
Bifurcation intability modes of axially compressed circular cylindrical shell are investigated in the limit of zero thickness (i.e., h (thickness) ${\rightarrow}$ 0) analytically, adopting the general stability theory developed by Triantafyllidis and Kwon (1987) and Kwon (1992). The primary state of the shell is obtained in a closed form using the asymptotic technique, and then the straight-forward bifurcation analysis is followed according to the general stability theory to obtain the bifurcation modes in the limit of zero thickness in a full analytical manner. Hence, the closed form bifurcation solution is obtained. Finally, the result is compared with the classical one.
This work shows that it is possible to obtain information about more than one parameter from acoustic field information. A variety of ultrasonic Lamb wave modes were utilized to reconstruct thickness and density of an isotropic plate. An image reconstruction of one parameter (thickness of a plate) was carried out for four cases, i.e., the lowest symmetrical and anti symmetrical modes, and the fastest symmetrical and anti symmetrical Lamb waves among multiple modes. For two parameter reconstructions (thickness and density), the image processing was performed using the lowest symmetrical and antisymmetrical modes simultaneously. In this work, a modified version of algebraic reconstruction technique (ART), which is a form of finite-series expansion method, was employed to reconstruct the ultrasonically computed tomographic images. Results from several sample geometries are presented.
Total number of resonant modes in a microwave oven cavity may be maximized for a given frequency bandwidth to obtain more uniform power distribution by choosing proper size of the cavity. The total number of modes is calculated for a dielectrically loaded rectangular cavity and its size is suggested here for which the change in the number of modes is less sensitive to the change of dielectric layer thickness and its total number of modes is maximized in a given range of cavity sizes. A prove coupled rectangular cavity is constructed and the total existing modes are measured to see the change of modes depending on the dielectric layer thickness and the cavity size. Surface wave mode existing in the dielectric layer is confirmed by measuring Q and the input impedance of the cavity for this mode, which closely compares with the calculation.
To study the effects of foam core density and face-sheet thickness on the mechanical properties and failure modes of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS) beam, especially when the aluminum foam core is made in aluminum alloy and the face sheet thickness is less than 1.5 mm, three-point bending tests were investigated experimentally by using WDW-50E electronic universal tensile testing machine. Load-displacement curves were recorded to understand the mechanical response and photographs were taken to capture the deformation process of the composite structures. Results demonstrated that when foam core was combined with face-sheet thickness of 0.8 mm, its carrying capacity improved with the increase of core density. But when the thickness of face-sheet increased from 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm, result was opposite. For AFS with the same core density, their carrying capacity increased with the face-sheet thickness, but failure modes of thin face-sheet AFS were completely different from the thick face-sheet AFS. There were three failure modes in the present research: yield damage of both core and bottom face-sheet (Failure mode I), yield damage of foam core (Failure mode II), debonding between the adhesive interface (Failure mode III).

In this paper, various influence factors on the impact-echo test which is an effective method in characterizing defects such as such as the delamination in the concrete structures were studied. The side to thickness ratio(a/h), the relative position of impacting and sensing points over the delamination that have great effects on the flexural and impact-echo(thickness) modes were investigated and examined by the parametric finite element analysis. As a result, the flexural modes dominate in the case of a/h > 2 and the thickness mode was more evident when a/h < 2. With regard to the relative position of impact source and sensing point to the defect, the flexural modes dominate even when either the loading or sensing point was over the delamination defect. However, the thickness mode prevails when both the impacting and sensing points are over the solid region beyond the delamination area.

With polymer properties and ceramic volume fraction as design variables, the optimal structure of 1-3 piezocomposites has been determined to maximize the thickness mode electromechanical coupling factor. When the piezocomposite vibrates in a thickness mode, inter-pillar resonant modes are likely to occur between lattice-structured piezoceramic pillars and polymer matrix, which significantly deteriorates the performance of the piezocomposite. In this work, a new method to design the structure of the 1-3 type piezocomposite is proposed to maximize the thickness mode electromechanical coupling factor while preventing the occurrence of the inter-pillar modes. Genetic algorithm was used for the optimal design, and the finite element analysis method was used for the analysis of the inter-pillar mode.

This study aimed to determine the optimal thickness of the active layer and scan mode for a flexible radiochromic film (F-RCF) based on the active lithium salt of pentacosa-10,12-diynoic acid (LiPCDA). F-RCFs of 90, 120, 140, and 170-㎛ thickness were fabricated using LiPCDA. Several pieces of the F-RCFs were exposed to doses ranging from 0 to 3 Gy. Transmission and reflection modes were used to scan the irradiated F-RCFs. Their dose-response curves were obtained using a second-order polynomial equation. Their sensitivity was evaluated for both scanning modes, and the uniformity of the batch was also examined. For both the transmission and reflection modes, the sensitivity increased as the film thickness increased. For the reflection mode, the dose response increased dramatically under 1 Gy. The value of the net optical density varied rapidly as the thickness of the film increased. However, the dose-response curves showed a supralinear-curve relationship at doses greater than 2 Gy. The sensitivity of the reflection scan at doses greater than 2 Gy was higher than that of the reflection scan within 0-2 Gy. The sensitivity steadily decreased with increasing doses, and the sensitivity of the two modes was within 0.1 to 0.2 at 2 Gy and was saturated beyond that. For the transmission scan, the sensitivity was approximately 0.2 at 3 Gy. For the intra-batch test result, the maximum net optical density difference of the intra-batch was 5.5% at 2 Gy and 7.4% at 0.2 Gy in the transmission and reflection scans, respectively. In the low-dose range, film thickness of more than 120-㎛ was proper in the transmission mode. In contrast, the transmission mode showed a better result compared to the reflection mode. Therefore, the proper scan mode should be selected according to the dose range.
This work proposes an alternative pipe wall-thinning inspection method based on change of eigenfrequencies of shell vibration modes in wall-thinned pipes. It takes much time to detect wall-thinning of pipes using ultrasonic thickness gauge and only a limited number of pipes are under regular inspection. In a pipe with locally decreased thickness, stiffness varies along circumferential direction and natural frequencies of shell vibration modes of the pipe change or frequencies of same modes bifurcate into two different values. Therefore, one can monitor pipe wall-thinning by measuring change of natural frequencies or estimate wall-thinning shape qualitatively. The feasibility of the proposed method was studied by FE vibration analysis for wall-thinned pipes. Modal testing was also carried out for the pipes with artificial wall-thinned section to verify the working performance of the suggested technique.
