  • In this study we have investigated physical and electrical properties of high temperature oxide (HTO) thin film using dichlorosilane (DCS) gas. This film had low etch rate and excellent step coverage, and its characteristics of Si-O bond were similar to those of thermal oxide. I-V curves also showed similar electrical properties to those of thermally grown oxide (SiO2) while time dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) results revealed 1/4 value of thermal oxide. However, defect density was measured to be much lower value than that of thermal oxide.

  • The aim of the work was to investigate the thermo-electrical properties of low cost and rapidly produced randomly oriented carbon/carbon (C/C) composite. The composite body was fabricated by combining the high-pressure hot-pressing (HP) method with the low-pressure impregnation thermosetting carbonization (ITC) method. After the ITC method step selected samples were graphitized at $3000^{\circ}C$. Detailed characterization of the samples' physical properties and thermal properties, including thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat and coefficient of thermal expansion, was carried out. Additionally, direct current (DC) electrical conductivity in both the in-plane and through-plane directions was evaluated. The results indicated that after graphitization the specimens had excellent carbon purity (99.9 %) as compared to that after carbonization (98.1). The results further showed an increasing trend in thermal conductivity with temperature for the carbonized samples and a decreasing trend in thermal conductivity with temperature for graphitized samples. The influence of the thickness of the test specimen on the thermal conductivity was found to be negligible. Further, all of the specimens after graphitization displayed an enormous increase in electrical conductivity (from 190 to 565 and 595 to 1180 S/cm in the through-plane and in-plane directions, respectively).

  • This study evaluates the changes of the subjective hand, preference, comfort and mechanical properties of tricot based artificial suede made from sea-island type micro fibers according to raising condition. The subjective hand and the preference of raised suede for jacket were rated by the 20's and 30's women experts according to raising cycles. Comfort properties were evaluated by air permeability, water vapor transmission, and thermal transmission. Mechanical properties were measured by the KES-FB system. The subjective hand of artificial suede was categorized into three hand factors: smoothness, warmness and thickness. Smoothness, warmness and thickness perception increased with raising cycles which affected hand preference and luxuriousness perception. The thickness and wale density of suede increased with the number of raising. Suede became more compact and less pliable and less stretchable due to increased fabric thickness; in addition, the surface of suede became smoother and compressive since the surface evenness of suede improved with smaller fiber fineness and an increased amount of naps covered the base fabric. Furthermore, water vapor transmission decreased and thermal insulation increased. The best raising conditions for artificial suede was four cycles in which artificial suede was preferred without changes in physical properties.

  • Physical properties of artificial graphite electrodes were evaluated along three different directions; circumferential (X), radial (Y), and axial (Z) directions. Four kinds of commercial electrode products were used in this study for the evaluation; pole (AP) and nipple (AN) of manufacturer A, pole (BP) and nipple (BN) of manufacturer B. The mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties in X and Y directions were very similar to each other. In Z direction, however, the mechanical properties, including flexural strength and compressive strength, were higher, and electric resistance and thermal expansion were much lower than those in the other directions. The microstructures observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope revealed that the differences in properties by the measuring direction were caused by the preferential alignment of needle cokes along the Z direction. When comparing the properties of the electrode samples in the same direction, the mechanical properties mainly depended on the bulk density or porosity of the samples as well as preferential alignment of needle cokes.

  • To examine the physical properties of POY through the microstructure control, the crystal structure such as the crystallinity, the crystallite size, the orientation, the shrinkage, the tensile properties, and the thermal stress of POY(80/48, SD) were examined at different draw ratios and annealing temperatures. From the examination following conclusions were obtained : 1. The crystallinity was more effected by the heat setting temperature than by the draw ratio. The increasing rate was greatest at the heat setting temperature range of $170~190^\circ{C}$. 2. The crystallite size perpendicular to the fiber axis was more effected by the annealing temperature at lower draw ratios. On the other hand, the crystal and amorphous orientations were more effected by the heat setting at higher draw ratios. 3. The boiling shrinkage did not change significantly, but the total shrinkage showed 13% at the draw ratio 1.9 and the heat setting temperature $170^\circ{C}$. 4. The maximum thermal stress increased with increasing the draw ratio and decreasing the heat setting temperature in the temperature range of $170~210^\circ{C}$. At the draw ratio 1.9 and the heat setting temperature $170^\circ{C}$, the maximum thermal stress found was 1.1gf/d. 5. In the heat setting temperature above $170^\circ{C}$ after the drawing, the crystallinity, the crystallite size, the orientation, and the strength increased with increasing temperature, but the shrinkage and the maximum thermal stress decreased with increasing temperature.

  • Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified with epoxy and aminosilane diethanolamine (DEA), and nanocomposites of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and the modified MWCNTs were prepared with the aim of improving the physical properties of biodegradable PBAT. The physical and the thermal properties of the PBAT/MWCNT nanocomposites were investigated using various techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements revealed that the MWCNTs were efficiently modified with DEA. Scanning electron micrographs of the nanocomposites indicated that the modified MWCNTs were dispersed homogeneously in PBAT. The thermal stability of the nanocomposite decreased with increase in the content of epoxy-MWCNT-DEA due to the poor thermal stabilities of epoxy and amino silane DEA. However, the surface hydrophobicity of the nanocomposite increased. The highest stress (170% of PBAT) was observed when the content of epoxy-MWCNT-DEA in the nanocomposite was 2 wt%.

  • Experimental study of the deterioration of high-temperature rock subjected to rapid cooling is essential for thermal engineering applications. To evaluate the influence of thermal shock on heated granite with different temperatures, laboratory tests were conducted to record the changes in the physical properties of granite specimens and the dynamic mechanical characteristics of granite after rapid cooling were experimentally investigated by using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The results indicate that there are threshold temperatures ($500-600^{\circ}C$) for variations in density, porosity, and P-wave velocity of granite with increasing treatment temperature. The stress-strain curves of $500-1000^{\circ}C$ show the brittle-plastic transition of tested granite specimens. It was also found that in the temperature range of $200-400^{\circ}C$, the through-cracks induced by rapid cooling have a decisive influence on the failure pattern of rock specimens under dynamic load. Moreover, the increase of crack density due to higher treatment temperature will result in the dilution of thermal shock effect for the rocks at temperatures above $500^{\circ}C$. Eventually, a fitting formula was established to relate the dynamic peak strength of pretreated granite to the crack density, which is the exponential function.

  • In this study, the influence of dilauroyl peroxide on mechanical and thermal properties of different polypropylene (PP) matrices was investigated. Polypropylene matrices, different molecular weight isotactic PP containing 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 wt% of dilauroyl peroxide (DLP) were prepared by using a single-screw extruder. The effect of the visbreaking agent (DLP) on mechanical, physical, thermal and morphological properties of different molecular weight PP had been studied. Mechanical properties (tensile strength at break point, at yield and elongation at break point), melt flow index (MFI), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses of these matrices were examined. Melting ($T_m$) and crystallization ($T_c$) temperatures, crystallinity ratio (%) and enthalpies were determined. The microstructure of isotactic polypropylene matrix was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From SEM analysis, it was observed that the surface disorder increased by the increasing amount of DLP. As a result of DSC analyses, the crystallinity ratio of the PP matrices has varied between 1.64-7.27%. Mechanical properties of the matrices have been improved. Particularly, the mechanical tests of PP have given interesting results when compounded with 0.06-0.08 wt% dilauroyl peroxide (DLP). Mechanical properties and thermal decomposition processes were all changed by increasing the amount of DLP in the matrix structure.
