A 3D thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model is developed to analyze the sealing performance of a notched mechanical seal applied in the reactor coolant pump. In the model, the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation coupled with notch heat balance equation, the heat conduction equations, and the deformation equations of the sealing rings are iteratively solved by the finite element method. The film pressure and temperature distribution are obtained, and the deformation of the sealing rings is revealed to study the mechanism of the notched mechanical seals. A parameterized study is conducted to analyze the sealing performance under different operating conditions. As a comparison, the sealing performance of non-notched seals is also studied. The results show that the hydrostatic effect is dominant in the load-carrying capacity of the fluid film due to the radial mechanical and thermal deformations. The notch can cool the fluid film and influence the thermal deformation of seal rings. The sealing performance is sensitive to the pressure difference, ambient temperature, and rotational speed. It is suggested to set the notches on the softer sealing rings to acquire the greater hydrodynamic effect. Compared with the non-notched, the notched end face holds a better lubrication performance, especially under lower rotational speed.

The buoyancy and initial momentum fluxes make near-field dominated by buoyant jet when thermal discharge releases underwater. In order to estimate prediction capabilities of those near-field phenomena, non-hydrostatic RANS applied CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) model was used. Condition of model was composed based on past laboratory experiments. Numerical simulations carried out for the horizontal buoyant jet in the stagnant flow and vertical buoyant jet into crossflow. The results of simulation are compared with the terms of trajectory and dilution rate of laboratory experiments and analytic model(CorJET) results. CFD model showed a good agreement with them. CFD model can be appropriate for assessment of submerged thermal discharge effect because CFD model can resolve the limitations of near-field analytic model and far-field quasi 3D hydrodynamic model. The accuracy and capability of the CFD model is reviewed in this study. If the computational efficiency get improved, CFD model can be widely applied for simulation of transport and diffusion of submerged thermal discharge.
The study was aimed to evaluate the applicability of a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic and water quality model, ELCOM-CAEDYM for Yongdam Reservoir, Korea. The model was applied for the simulations of hydrodynamics, thermal stratification processes, stream density flow propagation, and water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, nutrients, organic materials, and algal biomass (chl-a) for the period of June to December, 2006. The field data observed at four monitoring stations (ST1~ST4) within the reservoir were used to validate the models performance. The model showed reasonable performance nevertheless low frequency boundary forcing data were provided, and well replicated the physical, chemical, and biological processes of the system. Simulated spatial and temporal variations of water temperature, nutrients, and chl-a concentrations were moderately consistent with the field observations. In particular, the model rationally reproduced the succession of different algal species; i.e., diatom dominant during spring and early summer, after then cyanobacteria dominant under warm and stratified conditions. ELCOM-CAEDYM is recommendable as a suitable coupled 3D hydrodynamic and water quality model that can be effectively used for the advanced water quality management of large stratified reservoirs in Korea.
This Daper presents effective simulation of the dispersion of thermal discharge which can be relesed at Boryong power plant. Applied numerical models are finite difference method for hydrodynamic analysis and Masch-model comprised of conditions for ambient current velocity. Application of these models is done in Cheonsu Bay Summing up the results of this study are as follows; 1. It is found that the result for measurements of temperature appears high at southwardly Songdo on flood. The reason is that tidal currents which flowed north direction were accompanied with southwardly dispersed thermal discharge. A minute Particle of thermal Plume has a tendency to dispels inward Deacheon Bay. 2. According to the results of numerical experiment, maximum distance for thermal discharge dispersion appeared 10.8 km at lower part and 8.6 km at upper part with power plant outlet as starting point. 3. Comparative the numerical simulation and Airbone Multispectral Scanner indicated that thermal discharge should be verified separative phenomena. The simulated results were compared with field data set showing good agreement. It is concluded that these model can be simulated well.

Galerkin's finite element method is applied to a two-dimensional heat convection-diffusion problem arising in the hydrodynamic lubrication of thrust bearings used in naval vessels. A parabolized thermal energy equation for the lubricant, and thermal diffusion equations for both bearing pad and the collar are treated together, with proper juncture conditions on the interface boundaries. it has been known that a numerical instability arises when the classical Galerkin's method, which is equivalent to a centered difference approximation, is applied to a parabolic-type partial differential equation. Probably the simplest remedy for this instability is to use a one-sided finite difference formula for the first derivative term in the finite difference method. However, in the present coupled heat convection-diffusion problem in which the governing equation is parabolized in a subdomain(Lubricant), uniformly stable numerical solutions for a wide range of the Peclet number are obtained in the numerical test based on Galerkin's classical finite element method. In the present numerical convergence errors in several error norms are presented in the first model problem. Additional numerical results for a more realistic bearing lubrication problem are presented for a second numerical model.
Using two-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic simulations, we investigate the regulation of star ormation rates in turbulent, multiphase, galactic gaseous disks. Our simulation domain is xisymmetric, and local in the radial direction and global in the vertical direction. Our models nclude galactic rotation, vertical stratification, self-gravity, heating and cooling, and thermal onduction. Turbulence in our models is driven by momentum feedback from supernova events ccurring in localized dense regions formed by thermal and gravitational instabilities. Self-onsistent radiative heating, representing enhanced/reduced FUV photons from the star formation, s also taken into account. Evolution of our model disks is highly dynamic, but reaches a quasi-teady state. The disks are overall in effective hydrostatic equilibrium with the midplane thermal ressure set by the vertical gravity. The star formation rate is found to be proportional pproximately linearly to the midplane thermal pressure. These results are in good agreement with the predictions of a recent theory by Ostriker, McKee, and Leroy (2010) for the thermal/dynamic equilibrium model of star formation regulation.
A three-dimensional thermal hydrodynamic model is developed for carrying out unsteady simulation of the selective withdrawal of the stably stratified flow in a geometrically complex, natural reservoir The governing equations are discretized on a non-staggered grid using a second-order accurate, finite-volume scheme. The numerical model is validated by applying it to simulate three-dimensional, turbulent, stratified, shear-layer flow case. The numerical predictions appear to capture reasonably well the general shape of velocity and temperature profiles observed in the laboratory experiments, while significant overestimation of the magnitude of velocity profiles is observed in the application to the flow in a natural reservoir. The physics of selective withdrawal as emerge from the numerical simulations are also discussed.
Unlike land-based nuclear power plants, a marine or floating reactor is affected by external forces due to ocean conditions. These external forces can cause additional accelerations and affect each system and equipment of the marine reactor. Therefore, in designing a marine reactor and evaluating its performance and stability, a thermal hydraulic safety analysis code is necessary to consider the thermal hydrodynamic effects of ship motion. MARS, which is a reactor system analysis code, includes a dynamic motion model that can simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena under three-dimensional motion by calculating the body force term included in the momentum equation. In this study, it was verified that the dynamic motion model can simulate fluid motion with reasonable accuracy using conceptual problems. In addition, two modifications were made to the dynamic motion model; first, a user-supplied table to simulate a realistic ship motion was implemented, and second, the flow regime map determination algorithm was improved by calculating the volume inclination information at every time step if the dynamic motion model was activated. With these modifications, MARS could simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena under ocean motion more realistically.
Generalized hydrodynamic (GH) theory for multi-species gas and the computational models are developed for the numerical simulation of hypersonic rarefied gas flow on the basis of Eu's GH theory. The rotational non-equilibrium effect of diatomic molecules is taken into account by introducing excess normal stress associated with the bulk viscosity. The numerical model for the diatomic GH theory is developed and tested. Moreover, with the experience of developing the dia-tomic GH computational model, the GH theory is extended to a multi-species gas including 5 species; O$_2$, N$_2$, NO, O, N. The multi-species GH model includes diffusion relation due to the molecular collision and thermal phenomena. Two kinds of GH models are developed for an axisymmetric flow solver. By compar-ing the computed results of diatomic and multi-species GH theories with those of the Navier-Stokes equations and the DSMC results, the accuracy and physical consistency of the GH computational models are examined.
