  • Storage and transfer heat in soils is governed by the soil thermal properties and these properties are therefore needed in many engineering applications, including horizontal ground heat exchanger for ground-coupled heat pumps. This paper presents the evaluation results of the thermal diffusivity of soils (silica, quartzite, limestone, sandstone, granite, and two masonry soils used for the trench backfilling materials of the horizontal ground heat exchanger. To assess this thermal property, we (i) measure the soil thermal conductivities using single-probe method and (ii) use the de Vries method of summing the heat capacities of the soil constituents. The results show that the thermal diffusivity tends to increase as dry soil begins to wet, but it approaches a constant value or even decreases as the soil continues to wet. Combined algorithm with and improved model for the thermal conductivity of soils and the constituent equation provides accurate estimates of the soil thermal diffusivity.

  • The precipitation effect of Al-6%Si-0.4%Mg-0.9%Cu-(Ti) alloy (in wt.%) after various heat treatments was studied using a laser flash device (LFA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Solid solution treatment was performed at 535 ℃ for 6 h, followed by water cooling, and samples were artificially aged in air at 180 ℃ and 220 ℃ for 5 h. The titanium-free alloy Al-6%Si-0.4%Mg-0.9%Cu showed higher thermal diffusivity than did the Al-6%Si-0.4%Mg-0.9%Cu-0.2%Ti alloy over the entire temperature range. In the temperature ranges below 200 ℃ and above 300 ℃, the value of thermal diffusivity decreased with increasing temperature. As the sample temperature increased between 200 ℃ and 400 ℃, phase precipitation occurred. From the results of DSC analysis, the temperature dependence of the change in thermal diffusivity in the temperature range between 200 ℃ and 400 ℃ was strongly influenced by the precipitation of θ'-Al2Cu, β'-Mg2Si, and Si phases. The most important factor in the temperature dependence of thermal diffusivity was Si precipitation.

  • A flash method for measuring the unknown thermal property (the density, specific heat, or thermal diffusivity could be chosen as unknown) is described. The thermal diffusivity of UO$_2$ fuel samples is obtained from room temperature (300 K) to high temperature (1400 K). The specific heat is measured using a commercially available differential scanning calorimeter from room temperature to 500 K. The thermal conductivity of UO$_2$ fuel samples is calculated from the density, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat at constant pressure. The present results are in complete agreement with the usual trends for the thermal conductivity of dielectric materials, in which impurity levels are very important at low temperatures but become relatively unimportant at high temperatures. In addition, the thermal diffusivity values at room temperature are reexamined by measuring the thermal diffusivity of several UO$_2$ fuel samples with same level of doped Gd$_2$O$_3$.

  • In general, the factors affecting the heat transfer of asphalt pavement are divided into weather factors and pavement materials. Among them, material factors include the thermophysical and surface properties. An experiment was conducted on the thermal-physical factors of asphalt, which are the basis for the pavement failure model. The thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal emissivity were evaluated as the thermo-physical properties of asphalt. The specimens (WC-2 & PA-13) used in the experiment were compacted with a Gyratory Compactor. The experimental results of WC-2 and PA-13 showed a thermal conductivity of 1.18W/m·K and 0.9W/m·K, specific heat capacity of 970.8J/kg·K and 960.1J/kg·K, thermal emissivity of 0.9 and 0.91, and thermal diffusivity of 5.15㎡/s and 4.66㎡/s, respectively. Experiments on the heat transfer characteristics (thermo-physical properties) of asphalt pavement that can be used for thermal failure modeling of asphalt were conducted.

  • The effects of hairline treatment on surface blackening and thermal diffusion behaviors of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel sheet were evaluated by the three-dimensional surface profiler and laser-flash technique. The metallographic observation of coating damages by hairline treatments showed that several cracks were initiated and propagated along the interface between primary Zn/eutectic phases. As the hairline processing became more severe, the crack occurrence frequency in eutectic phase of coating layer and the surface roughness increased, which had a proportional relationship with the level of blackening on the coating surface. In addition, the higher interfacial areas of the blackened coating surface, caused by the hairline process, led to an increase in thermal diffusivity and conductivity of the coated steel sheet. On the other hand, when the coating damage by hairline treatment was excessive and the steel substrate was exposed, there was little difference between the thermal diffusivity/conductivity of the untreated sample though the blackening degree was higher than that of untreated sample. This work suggests that the increase in the surface areas of the coating layer without exposure to steel substrate through hairline treatment can be one of the effective technical strategies for the development of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel sheets with higher blackening level and thermal diffusivity.

  • Thermal and physical properties were measured on 206 Jurassic granite samples obtained from three boreholes in the central part of Korea. Thermal conductivity(${\lambda}$), thermal diffusivity(${\alpha}$), and specific heat(Cp) were measured in a laboratory; the average values are ${\lambda}$=2.813 W/mK, ${\alpha}=1.296mm^2/sec$, and Cp=0.816 J/gK, respectively. In addition, porosity(${\phi}$), and dry and saturated density(${\rho}$) were measured in the laboratory; the average values are ${\phi}$=0.01, ${\rho}(dry)=2.662g/cm^3$ and ${\rho}(saturated)=2.67g/cm^3$, respectively. Thermal diffusivity of 10 granite samples were measured with increasing temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. In this study, we found that thermal diffusivity at $200^{\circ}C$ is about 30% lower than thermal diffusivity at $25^{\circ}C$. In correlation analysis, thermal conductivity increases with increasing thermal diffusivity. However, thermal conductivity does not show good correlation with porosity and density. Consequently, we know that thermal conductivity of granite would be more influenced by mineral composition than by porosity. We also derived ${\rho}=-2.393{\times}{\phi}+2.705$ from density and porosity data. XRD and XRF analysis were performed to investigate effects of mineral and chemical composition on thermal conductivity. From those results, we found that thermal conductivity increases with increasing quartz and $SiO_2$, and decreases with increasing albite and $Al_2O_3$. Regression analysis using those mineral and chemical composition were carried out ; we found $K=0.0294V_{Quartz}+1.93$ for quartz, $K=0.237W_{SiO_2}-14.09$ for $SiO_2$, and $K=0.053W_{SiO_2}-0.476W_{Al_2O_3}+6.52$ for $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$. Specific gravities were measured on 10 granite samples in the laboratory. The measured specific gravity depends on chemical compositions of granite. Therefore, specific gravity can be estimated by the felsic-mafic index(F) that is calculated from chemical composition. The estimated specific gravity ranges from 2.643 to 2.658. The average relative error between measured and estimated specific gravities is 0.677%.

  • Thermal characterization of geomaterials has significant implication on the geothermal energy, disposal of nuclear wastes, geological sequestration of carbon dioxides and recovery of hydrocarbon resources. Heat transfer in multiphase materials is dominated by the thermal conductivity of consisting components, porosity, degree of saturation and overburden pressure, which have been investigated by the empirical correlation at macro-scale. The thermal measurement by Transient Plane Source (TPS) and associated algorithm for interpretation of thermal behavior in geomaterials corroborate the robustness of sensing techniques. The method simultaneously provides thermal conductivity, diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity. The newly introduced thermal network model enables estimating thermal conductivity of geomaterials subjected to the effective stress, which has not been evaluated using previous thermal models. The proposed methods shows the applicability of reliability of TPS technique and thermal network model.

  • To improve mean-life and reliability of power cable, we have investigated volume resistivity and thermal conductivity showed by changing the content of acetylene black which is the component parts of semiconductive shield in underground power transmission cable. The sheets were primarily kneaded in their pellet form material samples for 5 minutes on rollers ranging between 70[$^{\circ}C$] and 100[$^{\circ}C$]. Then they were produced as sheets after pressing for 20 minutes at 180[$^{\circ}C$] with a pressure of 200[kg/cm]. The content of conductive acetylene black was the variable, and their contents were 20, 30 and 40[wt%], respectively. Volume resistivity of specimens was measured by volume resistivity meter after 10 minutes in the preheated oven of both $25\pm1[^{\circ}C]$ and $90\pm1[^{\circ}C]$. Thermal conductivity was measured by Nano Flash Diffusivity. The measurement temperatures of thermal conductivity using Nano Flash Diffusivity were both 25[$^{\circ}C$] and 55[$^{\circ}C$]. From these experimental results, volume resistivity was high according to an increase of the content of acetylene black. And thermal conductivity was increased to an increase of the content of acetylene black. And thermal conductivity were increased by heating rate because volume of materials was expanded according to rise in temperature.

  • Thermal management is a critical issue for the development of high-performance electronic devices. In this paper, thermal conductivity values of mild steel and stainless steel(STS) are measured by light flash analysis(LFA) and dynamic thermal interface material(DynTIM) Tester. The shapes of samples for thermal property measurement are disc type with a diameter of 12.6 mm. For samples with different thickness, the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity are measured by LFA. For identical samples, the thermal resistance($R_{th}$) and thermal conductivity are measured using a DynTIM Tester. The thermal conductivity of samples with different thicknesses, measured by LFA, show similar values in a range of 5 %. However, the thermal conductivity of samples measured by DynTIM Tester show widely scattered values according to the application of thermal grease. When we use the thermal grease to remove air gaps, the thermal conductivity of samples measured by DynTIM Tester is larger than that measured by LFA. But, when we did not use thermal grease, the thermal conductivity of samples measured by DynTIM Tester is smaller than that measured by LFA. For the DynTIM Tester results, we also find that the slope of the graph of thermal resistance vs. thickness is affected by the usage of thermal grease. From this, we are able to conclude that the wide scattering of thermal conductivity for samples measured with the DynTIM Tester is caused by the change of slope in the graph of thermal resistance-thickness.
