  • This paper presented to design the power system stabilizer(PSS) for a turbo-generator system using LQG/LTR control synthesis for improving small-signal stability. Application study of LGG/LTR control synthesis is more appropriate in this system since a turbo-generator system is usually operated under circumstance of unmeasurable uncertainties and external disturbance. The LQG/LTR control theory was briefly reviewed for good understanding and the reasonable design approach. The design results are simulated for a case study and to check the system performance in comparison with currently operating lead-lag filtered PSS performance.

  • Acoustic Quanta, which British Physicist Dennis Gabor created, is the theoretical background for granular synthesis and has influenced many computer music artists and sound designers. Acoustic Quanta is a very short sound burst, lasting only 1 to 100 ms. Granular synthesis is a sound synthesis technique which slices original sound into sound grains and re-combines them into a new acoustic event. Concept of sound grain is borrowed from the acoustic quanta. Granular Synthesis can make very unique sound, so that it can be useful in many ways, especially in sound design. This paper presents concept of acoustic quanta and granular synthesis. It then discusses making a synthesizer as an implementation of synchronous granular synthesis and its applications on sound design. As a result, the duration of acoustic quanta should range between 0.239 and 33.367 ms, in consideration of audible frequencies, which is different from the original concept of the acoustic quanta.

  • The changes of growth and protein synthesis pattern by aluminum (Al), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn) treatments were studied in Cyanobacterium synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. When exposed to Al from 5ppm to 3oppm, synechocystis grows normally. But more than that retard the growth of algae notably. The 0.05ppm Cd additions had no effect on the growth of algae. 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5ppm Cd inhibited growth. Under 1 and 2ppm Cd stress, growth was greatly diminished. Zn had dual effects. The growth of algae in media containing 5ppm was stimulated. As concentration increases more than l5ppm, growth inbition increases. Under 25ppm Zn stress, growth was greatly diminished. According to logistic theory, r and K values of each heavy metal-treated groups were estimated. Correlation analysis of r and K values with metal concentration shows that there is negative correlation between K and concentration in Cd and Zn treatments. Critical concentration which shows lethal or sublethal effect was estimated by t-test of each r and K value. The cells cultured in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 5oppm of Al, 1 and 2ppm of Cd, and 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30ppm of Zn for 4 days was used for protein analysis. Analysis of protein synthesis with SDS-PACE showed alterations of protein synthesis pattern. The synthesis of protein about 220kD increased markedly. In this study, it showed that resistance mechanism against Al, Cd, and Zn is K selection and that metal stress induced the change of protein synthesis in Cyanobacterium synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.Key words:Cyanobacterium synechocystis sp. FCC 6803, Heavy metals, Aluminum, Cadmiutm Zinc, Crowth, Frotein synthesis.

  • This paper presents a new data path synthesis algorithm which takes into account simultaneously three important design criteria: testability, design area, and total execution time. We define a goodness measure on the testability of a circuit based on three rules of thumb introduced in prior work on synthesis for testability. We then develop a stepwise refinement synthesis algorithm which carries out the scheduling and allocation tacks in an integrated fashion. Experimental results for benchmark and other circuit examples show that we are able to enhance the testability of circuits with very little overheads on design area and execution time.

  • A novel neural network model, termed the standard neural network model (SNNM), similar to the nominal model in linear robust control theory, is suggested to facilitate the synthesis of controllers for delayed (or non-delayed) nonlinear systems composed of neural networks. The model is composed of a linear dynamic system and a bounded static delayed (or non-delayed) nonlinear operator. Based on the global asymptotic stability analysis of SNNMs, Static state-feedback controller and dynamic output feedback controller are designed for the SNNMs to stabilize the closed-loop systems, respectively. The control design equations are shown to be a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) which can be easily solved by various convex optimization algorithms to determine the control signals. Most neural-network-based nonlinear systems with time delays or without time delays can be transformed into the SNNMs for controller synthesis in a unified way. Two application examples are given where the SNNMs are employed to synthesize the feedback stabilizing controllers for an SISO nonlinear system modeled by the neural network, and for a chaotic neural network, respectively. Through these examples, it is demonstrated that the SNNM not only makes controller synthesis of neural-network-based systems much easier, but also provides a new approach to the synthesis of the controllers for the other type of nonlinear systems.

  • $\mu$ theory can handle the parametric uncertainty and produces more non-conservative controller than H$_{\infty}$ control theory. However an existing solution of the theory, D-K iteration, creates a controller of huge order and cannot handle the real or mixed real-complex perturbation sets. In this paper, we use genetic algorithms to solve these problems of the D-K iteration method. The Youla parameterization is used to obtain all stabilizing controllers and the genetic algorithms determines the values of the state feedback gain, the observer gain, and Q parameter to minimize $\mu$, the structured singular value, of given system. From an example, we show that this method produces lower order controller which controls a real parameter-perturbed plant than D-K iteration method.

  • Equations of motion are derived and solved using the finite element method substructure synthesis for the disk-spindle system with rigid spindle and flexible shaft. The disk is modeled as a flexible spinning disk by Kirchhoff plate theory and von Karman nonlinear strain. The spindle supporting the flexible disk is modeled as a rigid body to consider its complex geometry. The stationary shaft supporting the rotating disk-spindle-bearing system is modeled by Euler beam, and the ball bearings are modeled as the stiffness matrix with 5 degrees of freedom. Developed theory is applied to analyze the vibration characteristics of a 3.5" HDD and a 2.5" HDD, respectively, and modal tests are performed to verify the simulation results. This paper shows that the developed theory can be effectively applied to the rotating disk-spindle system with the spindle of complex shape.

  • The objectives of this study was to apprehend the displaying components by comparing and analyzing the ten types of construction textbooks used in Technical high schools by elaboration theory by Ferigeluth, and to supply preliminary data for the following revising textbooks. To achieve them, first, comparable units were excerpted by analyzing between the national textbooks of 7th curriculum and the new revised curriculum used in Technical high schools. Second, each five types of 7th and new curriculum textbooks were compared and analyzed by seven requisites in the Elaboration theory by Reigeluth. As the results of the study, first, elaborating process like conceptual, procedural, and theoretical elaboration has been applied to the different subjects according to their properties. Second, cognitive strategy activator among the seven strategies was widely used. Whereas, analogy was not applied to all the ten types of the text books. In addition, Learning prerequisite sequence was presented with only simple picture and explanation, and it was inadequately used in practice. Third, summary was more used in 7th curriculum text than the new revised text. Fourth, six strategy components were widely used to all texts except construction and materials in the five types of texts. Lastly synthesis of theory and practice was more used than summary in theory subjects and learner control was more used in the subject of the synthesis of theory and practice.
