  • The international nuclear industry has undergone a lot of changes since the Fukushima, Chernobyl and TMI nuclear power plant accidents. However, there are still large and small component deficiencies at nuclear power plants in the world. There are many causes of electrical equipment defects. There are also factors that cause component failures due to human errors. This paper analyzed the root causes of failure and types of human error in 300 cases of electrical component failures. We analyzed the operating experience of electrical components by methods of root causes in K-HPES (Korean-version of Human Performance Enhancement System) and by methods of human error types in HuRAM+ (Human error-Related event root cause Analysis Method Plus). As a result of analysis, the most electrical component failures appeared as circuit breakers and emergency generators. The major causes of failure showed deterioration and contact failure of electrical components by human error of operations management. The causes of direct failure were due to aged components. Types of human error affecting the causes of electrical equipment failure are as follows. The human error type group I showed that errors of commission (EOC) were 97%, the human error type group II showed that slip/lapse errors were 74%, and the human error type group III showed that latent errors were 95%. This paper is meaningful in that we have approached the causes of electrical equipment failures from a comprehensive human error perspective and found a countermeasure against the root cause. This study will help human performance enhancement in nuclear power plants. However, this paper has done a lot of research on improving human performance in the maintenance field rather than in the design and construction stages. In the future, continuous research on types of human error and prevention measures in the design and construction sector will be required.

  • This study has purpose on analyzing the error types which are identified after middle and high school students perform the online programming assignments and also has the purpose on the analysis of correlation between the frequency of error occurrence according to academic achievement level in programming concept learning and types of errors analyzed previously. For this study, the syntax, logical, and coding errors are analyzed from the performed results of programming research assignment for 88 students. Analyzed results show that the logical error has the highest occurrence rate of 69.3% among three types of errors, and it has been shown meaningful difference in the frequency of error occurrence between three achievement level groups of high, middle, and low. In the correlation analysis of achievement level and error types, it shows negative relationship between logical error and coding error, and therefore it can be concluded that as achievement level is higher, both logical and coding errors tend to occur less. In the correlation analysis in error types, it shows positive relationship between syntax error and coding error.

  • This paper describes ongoing work on the correction of adverb errors committed by Korean learners studying English as a foreign language (EFL), using an automated English writing assessment system. Adverb errors are commonly found in learners 'writings, but handling those errors rarely draws an attention in natural language processing due to complicated characteristics of adverb. To correctly detect the errors, adverbs are classified according to their grammatical functions, meanings and positions within a sentence. Adverb errors are collected from learners' sentences, and classified into five categories adopting a traditional error analysis. The error classification in conjunction with the adverb categorization is implemented into a set of mal-rules which automatically identifies the errors. When an error is detected, the system corrects the error and suggests error specific feedback. The feedback includes the types of errors, a corrected string of the error and a brief description of the error. This attempt suggests how to improve adverb error correction method as well as to provide richer diagnostic feedback to the learners.

  • Interests in ecosystem services have increased and a number of attempts to perform a quantitative valuation on them have been undertaken. To classify the ecosystem types landcover classification maps are generally used. However, some forest types on landcover classification maps have a number of errors. The purpose of this study is to verify the forest types on the landcover map by using a variety of field survey data and to suggest an improved method for forest type classifications. Forest types are compared by overlaying the landcover classification map with the 4th forest type map, and then they are verified by using National Forest Inventory, 3rd National Ecosystem Survey and field survey data. Misclassifications of forest types are found on the forest on the forest type map and farm and other grassland on the landcover map. Some errors of forest types occur at Daegu, Busan and Ulsan metropolitan cities and Gangwon province. The results of accuracy in comprehensive classification show that deciduous forest is 76.1%; coniferous forest is 54.0%; and mixed forest is 22.2%. In order to increase the classification accuracy of forest types a number of remote sensing images during various time periods should be used and the survey period of NFI and the National Forest Inventory and National Ecosystem Survey should be consistent. Also, examining areas with wide forest patch should be prioritized during the field survey in order to decrease any errors.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze eighth grade students' errors in the constructed-response items to improve teaching and learning of mathematics in schools. By analyzing 99 students' responses to nine constructed-response items, we found several types of students' errors in their responses to the assessment items involving with mathematical reasoning and representations, problems within realistic contexts, and mathematical connections. Not only a single error but also multiple errors (a combination of two or more types of errors) were discovered. In particular, high achieving students showed more simple errors than multiple errors while low achieving students had more multiple errors in various kinds.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the at of denture bases processed by injection pressing technic using laser scanner of reverse engineering technic. The auther duplicated 20 maxillary edentulous models and 20 mandibular edentulous models, which were scanned on HYSCAN 45C 3D BCANNER(Hymarc Co., Canada). The scanned data were stored in the personal computer using SURFACER (Imageware Co. U.S.A.) software program. After 40 dentures were cured by PERform Inkovac system, SR-Ivocap system, Palajet system, and Sulfon system, they were stored in water at room temperature fir 24 hours. The dentures were scanned on HYSCAN 45C 3D SCANNER(Hymarc Co., Canada). The scanned data were stored in the personal computer using SURFACER (Imageware Co., U.S.A.) software program. By overlapping two images using the same program, the fit between two surfaces was scaled by positive and negative errors. The obtained results were as follows 1. In the upper denture, most of the positive errors occurred on the lingual side of anterior alveolar ridge and the negative errors were on the flange of denture bases. 2. In the lower denture, most of the positive errors occurred on the inner side of lingual flange and the negative errors were on the border of anterior labial flange areas, 3. There were no statistical differences among the positive errors of the four types of injection denture curing methods and also no statistical differences between negative errors except only in negative maximum errors. 4. In PERform system and SR-Ivocap system, they have the tendency of inaccurate at of lower denture bases comparing to that of upper denture bases. 5. The negative error scales were greater than the positive error scales in all types of injection denture curing methods.

  • Background: Statistical analysis is essential in regard to obtaining objective reliability for medical research. However, medical researchers do not have enough statistical knowledge to properly analyze their study data. To help understand and potentially alleviate this problem, we have analyzed the statistical methods and errors of articles published in the Korean Journal of Pain (KJP), with the intention to improve the statistical quality of the journal. Methods: All the articles, except case reports and editorials, published from 2004 to 2008 in the KJP were reviewed. The types of applied statistical methods and errors in the articles were evaluated. Results: One hundred and thirty-nine original articles were reviewed. Inferential statistics and descriptive statistics were used in 119 papers and 20 papers, respectively. Only 20.9% of the papers were free from statistical errors. The most commonly adopted statistical method was the t-test (21.0%) followed by the chi-square test (15.9%). Errors of omission were encountered 101 times in 70 papers. Among the errors of omission, "no statistics used even though statistical methods were required" was the most common (40.6%). The errors of commission were encountered 165 times in 86 papers, among which "parametric inference for nonparametric data" was the most common (33.9%). Conclusions: We found various types of statistical errors in the articles published in the KJP. This suggests that meticulous attention should be given not only in the applying statistical procedures but also in the reviewing process to improve the value of the article.

  • The study was done to find out if there's any correlation between the results of the state-run college entrance examination called "suneung," or college scholastic ability test (CSAT) and the frequency of errors of the medical and nursing students. These two groups of students were subjects for the research. The study was based on the writing of fresh year students who were required to take four-credit-hour English course. These students' writing, particularly their self introduction, was analyzed to see if medical students (the high-scored) made fewer errors on the writing and nursing students (the medium-scored) made more critical errors or vice versa, and furthermore, if the results of the scores had any correlation on the critical errors in writing. The concern of the study was also to explain the attributable factors of the outcome if the high-scored of CSAT actually made fewer errors as well as the types of critical errors made and ways to minimize them.
