  • This research intends to give a practice of mathematics lesson-critique and some perspectives on a mathematics lesson in the elementary school level. We carried out a mathematics lesson-critique on a lesson chosen as a good lesson by a local educational district in Korea. The main themes of mathematics lesson-critique were the reconstruction of lesson models, the pursuit of relational understanding, the activation of mathematical communication, and the didactical transformation by a in-service teacher. Meanwhile we confirmed that we need to discuss the properness and adequateness of contents about division of natural numbers given in the elementary mathematics textbook and teachers' guide according to the revised 2007 mathematics curriculum.

  • In this study, we investigated how the relationship between 'parallel' lines and 'identical' lines is stated in mathematics textbooks of the 2007 revised national curriculum. In school mathematics, 'parallel' lines and 'identical' lines are explicitly distinguished in the perspective of 'coincidence', whereas 'identical' lines are implicitly regarded as a special case of 'parallel' in the perspective of 'slope'. These different treatments could bring out a confusion as was in the mock mathematics test for 2012 College Scholastic Ability Test. To resolve this confusion, it needs to be considered that the relationship between 'parallel' lines and 'identical' lines are more clearly stated in the context of 'slope' such as in some textbooks for the 4th and 5th curriculum and a textbook of Japan.

  • 'Sentence posing' is newly given in the third through sixth grade mathematics textbooks of the revised 2007 curriculum to confirm students' understanding on mathematical concepts of definitions. In this paper, we discuss the role of the sentence posing in the third grade mathematics textbooks on the basis of the problems occurred in third graders' sentence posing activities. Overall, it turned out that the role of the sentence posing was somewhat restrictive. Hence the sentence posing needs to be applied to check whether students can properly use the definitions in real life situations. In addition, it is necessary to employ the present role of the sentence posing to confirm students' understanding on mathematical concepts of definitions selectively according to the concepts of definitions.

  • This paper analyzed the topics dealing with three-dimensional figures in most recently revised mathematics textbooks on the basis of the national mathematics curriculum announced in 2007. First, the overall content was analyzed with regard to how textbooks were aligned to the curriculum as well as how the main elements including the definitions of specific solid figures were introduced and developed in different units across grades. Second, the instructional methods of three-dimensional figures were analyzed, which specifically revealed the lack of inquiry phase before introducing cones and pyramids. Third, the instructional methods to foster students' spatial sense with solid figures were analyzed, which showed the increased focus on the prediction and representation of figures. It is expected that the issues and suggestions from this study are informative revising curricular materials and applying them to the classroom.

  • A characteristic of the national mathematics curriculum revised in 2007 is to repeal the level-oriented individualized curriculum and choose substance of individualized teaching and learning based on the student's achievement level and quality. To do this we first have to think through how to compare students' achievement and differentiate classes. In this paper, we introduce the (modified) Angoff method as a method for comparing students' achievement and the concept of representative items for each achievement level in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement of Mathematics, and discuss how to use them in individualized teaching and learning, especially comparing students' achievement.

  • The study of 2011 education course revision proposal suggests that middle school level function shall be taught with emphasis on its role as tool to understand the situations of actual world, and the concept shall be extended in high school into formularized setting that integrate various fields based on middle school function. In revising education course, the circumstances of other countries are desired to be considered to keep abreast of international standard education courses. In this study, the textbooks of Gesamtschule a general school a school type similar to the education system in Korea among various school forms of Germany were selected to look into the characteristics of function introduction and teaching & learning in Germany, and the textbooks were compared and analyzed with those of Korea. As a result of comparison and analysis on the system and contents with emphasis on function area, German textbooks differed from the 7th revised education course on the introduction of function concept, contents development method and method of instructing on graph etc. Such differences are anticipated to serve as data for reference in the development of revised education courses and textbooks in Korea.

  • The Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation(KICE) has carried out the research on the development of the standards on teaching evaluation between 2004 and 2006, and particularly on the 'mathematics' teaching evaluation in 2006. The purpose of development of mathematics teaching evaluation standards is to improve not only mathematics teachers' professionalism but also their own teaching methods or strategies. The standards on mathematics teaching evaluation were developed based on the standards on general (not individual subject) teaching evaluation. They were revised and modified by analyzing the results of the interviews and survey with teachers about the adaptability of the standards in school. The standards were classified into four major areas of knowledge, planning, practice, and professionalism. Each area of these four were categorized into 6 smaller divisions and 36 elements. In addition, it was presented that brief descriptions on each teaching evaluation standards(element), guideline for evaluation methods, evaluator's observation index, and performance level with explanation for the standard achievement in four stages.

  • New mathematics textbooks for elementary school students are under development according to the 2015 national revised curriculum. Not only contents but also framework of textbooks may be interesting to the mathematics educators and researchers. Considering the high dependency on textbooks in elementary classrooms, the influence of the framework of textbooks in mathematics learning cannot be overlooked. The unit and lesson frameworks of the textbook are important because they are directly related to the quality of mathematic lessons, especially when teachers make a lesson plan based on the unit and lesson frameworks of the textbook. This study is to analyse the unit and lesson frameworks of elementary school mathematics textbooks and to find out elementary school teachers' preference about its analysed key points. For longitudinal analysis, we selected 3rd-grade mathematics textbooks of 5th, 6th, 7th, the 2007, and the 2009 national revised curriculums. For horizontal analysis, we selected 3rd-grade mathematics textbooks of Korea, Japan, United States and Finland. We compared unit and lesson frameworks of various textbooks, and abstracted key elements of the textbook frameworks, and constructed survey questions. Looking at results from survey questions based on analysed key points, we were able to grasp the teachers' preference for unit and lesson frameworks for mathematics textbook. Based on the results of this study, some implications for the development of framework for new mathematics textbooks are suggested.

  • In this study, we surveyed on the 3rd and 4th grade teachers' perception and teaching practices towards open-ended question in the elementary mathematics textbook in the revised 7th curriculum. According to the result, teachers understood the purpose of open-ended question in general, but they recognized some problems in terms of open-ended question itself, difficulties found when they dealt with open-ended question in their classes, teacher's guide and teacher training. This research suggests ways of improvement of open-ended question on the basis of the survey results.
