  • This study aims to develop performance assessment tools for mathematics in the primary school. In order to achieve this aim, it reviews the tics in the primary school. In order to achieve this aim, it reviews the meaning and the purpose of mathematics performance assessment, and the characteristics of performance assessment tasks. Then the framework for portfolio developed in this study is introduced. This portfolio is called 'mathematical thinking and applying'. It aims at balanced assessment for improvement of mathematics instruction. It is composed of journal writhing, problem by the student, constructed task, work samples, written test, self assessment, teacher's comment and parents' comment. The criteria of performance tasks is categorized in impact, reasoning, accuracy and communication. The procedures of development of these tasks are as follows: the analysis of mathematics curriculum for the primary school, the design of performance tasks with considering teaching unit goals, designing rubrics, discussing these tasks with teachers in primary school, modifying them when is needed, observing the process of children's task performing, interviewing with teachers and final modifying. After performance assessment tasks are implemented, the answers by the students is analyzed using rubrics. Then anchor papers are selected. Also, the errors of children are analyzed. Through the process, teachers can obtain the information of children for improvement of mathematics instruction. Finally in order to generalize this study, I suggest that we need to cooperate with the field of education and to establish expert assessment groups.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of mathematical communication-centered teaching using peer feedbacks on students' mathematics achievement and mathematical dispositions toward mathematics, and then this study examined the characteristics of feedbacks used by students. To do this study, two sixth grade classes selected from an elementary school in Seoul participated in the current study; one class for a treatment group applying mathematical communication-centered teaching using peer feedback, and the other for a comparison group applying traditional teaching using teacher-centered communication. The results of this study showed the fact that a treatment group of mathematical communication-centered teaching applying peer feedback scored statistically higher than a comparison group applying teacher-centered communication with respect to both students' mathematical achievement and disposition. Especially, this communication-centered teaching program focused on peer feedback was more effective to middle or lower level students than higher level students. In addition, mathematical communication-centered teaching applying peer feedbacks helps students reflect their own thinking process about problem solving, and students experienced the improvement of their confidence about mathematics from opportunities to provide peers with feedbacks. Finally, the present study suggests the important role of communication in mathematics learning, particularly student-to-student feedbacks rather than teacher-to-students feedbacks. That is to say, students need to have many opportunities to represent their own mathematical thinking processes using mathematical language.

  • The present study focuses on the contribution of a teaching unit to the development of spatial ability of third graders in general and from a gender point of view in particular. The research population consisted of seventy-four pupils: thirty-seven pupils in the experimental group who attended the teaching unit and thirty-seven pupils in the control group. The spatial ability of all the pupils was examined by means of common tests which checked cognitive capabilities of spatial ability. The research findings illustrate an improvement in the spatial ability of the experimental group pupils following the participation in the teaching unit. Moreover, regarding the gender aspect, the findings show that there was no significant differentiation between the spatial ability of third grade boys and the spatial ability of girls of the same age group.

  • The study aims to compare between two lectures of elementary mathematics education in United States and Korea based on the Ball et al.'s classification of mathematical knowledge for teaching. The lecturers are a professor of University in United States and me. In both lectures, subjects and contents of lectures are much similar but there are many different things. And the differences are mainly due to the area of pedagogical content knowledge, especially either knowledge of content and students or knowledge of content and teaching. Also the different courses of both universities are one of important causes of the differences. The study will be able to contribute to the studies on the improvement of our course, elementary mathematics education.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of mathematics learning through tessellation activities on the improvement of spatial sense and to find out a better mathematics teaching method that could further develop spatial sense. For this purpose, the following questions were attempted; Can mathematics learning using tessellation activities develop spatial sense? In odor to test this hypothesis, twenty-four fifth graders of a class were selected at random. And the experimental group was divided into four groups according to gender and academic performance. The groups were protested and post-tested to determine results based on the quasi-experimental design(i.e. one-group pretest-post test design). The process of this study was checking spatial sense for a common evaluation of experimental group. In this study, tangram, pattern block, and GSP was used for mathematics learning through tessellation activities during each independent-study, discretion-activity, and math class. The instrument used in this study was a spatial sense test and pretest and post-test were implemented with the same instrument(i.e. K-WISC-III Activity Test). In conclusion, mathematics learning through tessellation activities with tangram, pattern block, and GSP is an effective teaching and learning method for the improvement of the spatial sense.

  • The purpose of this study is to affirm what influences the lessons applied by reorganizing the ratio-graph unit of level 6-A on the basis on Realistic Mathematics Education(RME) give on mathematical scholastic achievements and mathematical preferences. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the experimental study was exerted by making two classes of 6 grades in J elementary school located in Gumi city, Gyeongbuk province as subjects. In this study, test of degree of the mathematics learning ability of student, multiple-choice test and descriptive test of the learning dispositions of student were exerted and the results were t-test officially. The results and the conclusions of this study were as follows: First, the results acquired by officially t-test the levels of the mathematics learning ability of student of the group taught by lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME and the group taught by lessons according to the 7th curriculum show a meaningful difference(p=.007). This means that the lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME showed meaningful influences on the improvement of degree of the mathematics learning ability of student. Second, the results acquired by officially t-test the learning dispositions of student multiple-choice test of the group taught by lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME and the group taught by lessons according to the 7th curriculum show a meaningful difference. Especially in the factors of 'mathematical will'(p=.017) and 'mathematical value'(p=.029) were meaningful differences. Also in the descriptive test of the learning dispositions of student, the experimental class showed that it had the potential possibility to have more positive attitudes meaningfully in comparison with the compared class. This means that the lessons according to the teaching materials reorganized on the basis of RME showed meaningful influences on the learning dispositions of student.

  • The axiomatic geometry unit of the space figure in Mathematics II in the expository book of high school math curriculum (published by Ministry of Education, June 20, 1995) suggests some teaching points to bear in mind, so as not to make use of the system of axiom. However, it doesn't take the axiom about the space geometry as a starting point of argument, and so many textbooks can be found, in which intuitively true propositions are proved acceptable by the logical ambiguous statements. Thus, this study analyzes the contents of axiomatic geometry in high school math II textbooks and draws their problems. As an alternative improvement, 3 kinds of axiom on the space geometry and some important propositions, which are basic to proofs of proposition, will be presented here in this paper.

  • This study tried to analyze the problems by critically examining how the chance is taught in relation to the concept of chance and randomness in the Korean elementary school mathematics curriculum. To this end, the concepts of chance and randomness were first examined, and problems were presented in based on this by the literature analysis on mathematics curriculum material and textbooks for elementary school in Korea. As a result, there was a lack of experience in reasoning based on data, and randomness instruction was not performed properly. In addition, as the teaching of the sample space was omitted, contradictory materials were being used. Moreover, it was pointed out that the teaching of chance is focused on a specific grade level. For the improvement of the teaching of chance, a teaching of the probability experiment and the sample space were mainly suggested, and it was also suggested that the contents of the data area be adjusted for the composition focused on a specific grade.

  • This study implemented a comparative analysis of the international mathematics curriculum on time learning. It aimed the improvement of challenges students facing when they learn time. As a preliminary step, I reviewed the previous literature on teaching and learning of time, and based on this, I drew five issues that require to be considered for better time learning. The coverage of time contents and the learning periods of respective time contents were compared across the mathematics curriculum of Korea, Japan, Australia, the United States, and Finland. The textbook cases of those countries were analyzed with a special focus on the five issues. The results showed that the Korean curriculum assigned time learning contents compressively during short periods compared to other countries. responded to the issues on teaching and learning of time, several improvement ideas were deduced from textbook cases of other countries. Implications for the curriculum reform were discussed underlying the results.

  • This paper provides an outline of mathematics education based on the classroom ecology. Ecology is the subject that concentrates on the relations of human and environment. As mathematics education consists of many factors, it is natural that mathematics education should be interest in the perspective of ecology. This paper examines the meaning of ecology and classroom ecology of mathematics education in the perspective of ecology. And it provides the directions of ecological mathematics education. In special, I set the frame of mathematics classroom in the perspective of ecology. The ecological structure divides microsystem(teacher, student, content), mesosysten(relations of microsystems), exosystem(school), and macrosystem(the objects of mathematics education). Lastly, I suggest the ways of mathematical learning and research of classroom ecology in mathematics education. For we should focus the improvement of students' mathematical ability, we must search for the various teaching and learning methods and the ares of research in the perspective of ecology classroom. Therefore, we should be interested in the classroom environments as well as teaching methods, contents based on the ecology classroom in mathematics education.
