  • In this paper, several process parameter studies of the manufacturing process of the steel cords are carried out to verify the relation between the process parameters and the residual stresses on the steel cords. At first, the finite element analysis of the drawing process is performed and the residual stress distributions with respect to the wire material and the area reduction ratio are obtained. The residual stress of the drawn wire is imported the finite element analysis of the twisting process as an initial stress. After that a parameter study of the twisting process is carried out. The process parameters are the applied tension, the over-twisting angle and the tensile strength of the drawn wire. Based on these studies, the optimum values of the process parameters which can remove or reduce the undesired residual stresses are determined. The optimum value of the process parameters are confirmed by the finite element analysis of the elastic recovery process of the steel cords. Finally, the finite element analysis of the roller straightening process is done to study the variation of the distribution of the residual stress before and after the process.

  • Estimating the damage induced by an explosion around a blast hole has always been a challenging issue in geotechnical engineering. It is difficult to determine an exact dimension for damage zone since many parameters are involved in the formation of failures, and there are some uncertainties lying in these parameters. Thus, the present study adopted a probabilistic approach towards this problem. First, a reliability model of the problem was established and the failure probability of induced damage was calculated. Then, the corresponding exceedance risk curve was developed indicating the relation between the failure probability and the cracked zone radius. The obtained risk curve indicated that the failure probability drops dramatically by increasing the cracked zone radius so that the probability of exceedance for any crack length greater than 4.5 m is less than 5%. Moreover, the effect of each parameter involved in the probability of failure, including blast hole radius, explosive density, detonation velocity, and tensile strength of the rock, was evaluated by using a sensitivity analysis. Finally, the impact of the decoupling ratio on the reduction of failures was investigated and the location of its maximum influence was demonstrated around the blast point.

  • Fabrication of a complex aluminum alloy by the ARB process using dissimilar aluminum alloys has been carried out. Two-layer stack ARB was performed for up to six cycles at ambient temperature without a lubricant according to the conventional procedure. Dissimilar aluminum sheets of AA1050 and AA5052 with thickness of 1 mm were degreased and wire-brushed for the ARB process. The sheets were then stacked together and rolled to 50% reduction such that the thickness became 1 mm again. The sheet was then cut into two pieces of identical length and the same procedure was repeated for up to six cycles. A sound complex aluminum alloy sheet was successfully fabricated by the ARB process. The tensile strength increased as the number of ARB cycles was increased, reaching 298 MPa after 5 cycles, which is about 2.2 times that of the initial material. The average grain size was $24{\mu}m$ after 1 cycle, and became $1.8{\mu}m$ after 6 cycles.

  • Polycarbonate diol-based waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was prepared by prepolymer mixing process. The prepolymer mixture contained the polycarbonate diol, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), dimethylol propionic acid, triethylamine, and ethylenediamine (EDA). The NCO/OH ratio in the prepolymer was adjusted by controlling the molar ratio of IPDI, and its effects on the properties of WPU were studied. The structure of WPU was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The average particle size increased and viscosity decreased with increasing NCO/OH ratio and EDA content in WPU. The reduced phase separation between soft and hard segments increased glass transition temperature. The reduction in the thermal decomposition temperature could be attributed to the low bond energy of urethane and urea groups, which constituted the hard segment. Additionally, the polyurethane chain mobility was restricted, elongation decreased, and tensile strength increased. The hydrogen bond between the hard segments formed a dense structure that hindered water absorption.

  • Geopolymer binders fascinate the attention of researchers as a replacement to cement binder in conventional concrete. One-ton production of cement releases one ton of carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere. In the replacement of cement by geopolymer material, there are two advantages: one is the reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere, second is the utilization of Fly ash and Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) are by-products from coal and steel industries. This paper focuses on the mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete. The framework considered in this research work is geopolymer source (Fly ash, GGBFS and crimped steel fibre) and alkaline activator which consists of NaOH and Na2SiO3 of molarity 8M. Here the Na2SiO3 / NaOH ratio was taken as 2.5. The variables considered in this experimental work include Binder content (360,420 and 450 kg/m3), the proportion of Fly ash and GGBS (70-30, 60-40 and 50-50) for three different grades of Geopolymer concrete (GPC) GPC 20, GPC 40 and GPC 60. The percentage of crimped steel fibres was varied as 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%. Generally, the inclusion of steel fibres increases the flexural and split tensile strength of Geopolymer concrete. The optimum dosage of steel fibres was found to be 0.4% (by volume fraction).

  • Lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) were prepared using a two-step deep eutectic solvent (DES) and enzymatic pretreatment followed by mechanical defibrillation, and we examined the effects of enzymatic pretreatment conditions on different characteristics of the LCNFs thus obtained. The LCNFs yielded using the two-step DES pretreatment (Enz-LCNF) exhibited a well-defibrillated entangled web-like structure with an average fiber diameter ranging from 15.7 to 20.4 nm. Furthermore, we found that the average diameter and filtration time of the Enz-LCNFs decreased with an increase in enzyme concentration and enzymatic treatment time, whereas we detected a concomitant reduction in the tensile strength of the Enz-LCNF sheets. The Enz-LCNFs were characterized by a typical cellulose I structure, thereby indicating that the enzymatic treatment causes very little damage to the crystalline form.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the cold reduction rate and an ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) on the fatigue behaviors of STS 304L. The tensile strength, yield strength, hardness value and fatigue limit in the UFT fatigue test linearly increased as thickness decreased from 1.5 mm to 1.1 mm, as the cold reduction rate of STS 304L increased. As a result of the UFT fatigue test (R = -1) of four specimens, the fatigue limit of the S-N curve formed a knee point in the region of $10^6$, and the 2nd fatigue limit caused by giga cycle fatigue did not appeared. In the case of t = 1.1 mm, the highest fatigue limit was 345 MPa, which was 64.3% higher than the original material (t = 1.5 mm). As a result of the UFT fatigue test of STS 304L, many small surface cracks occurred, grown, coalesced while tearing.

  • This study conducted tensile tests on SA508 Gr.1a low alloy steel and SA312 TP316 stainless steel piping materials under various strain rates at room temperature (RT) and $316^{\circ}C$ to investigate the effects of loading rate on the deformation behavior of nuclear piping materials. At RT, the deformation behavior for both pipe materials showed a typical loading rate dependence, i.e., the strength increased and the ductility decreased as the loading rate increased. At $316^{\circ}C$, however, the strength and elongation of SA508 Gr.1a low alloy steel decreased as the loading rate increased, and its reduction of area non-linearly varied with the loading rate. For SA312 TP316 stainless steel, the strength, elongation, and reduction of area at $316^{\circ}C$ were almost the same regardless of the loading rate. At both temperatures, the strain hardening capacity was nearly independent of the loading rate for SA508 Gr.1a low alloy steel, while it decreased with increasing loading rate for SA312 TP316 stainless steel.

  • Purpose: For optimizing properties of final glasses frame, the aim of this study is to examine the correlation of processing conditions and properties of cellulose acetate (CA) sheets through the investigation of properties of CA sheets prepared under processing steps. Methods: The properties of CA sheets were investigated in terms of different glasses frame processing conditions, bending process, barrel process, and ultrasonic cleaning process. CA sheets prepared through the sequential processing were examined by various analysis: gloss, mechanical properties, thermal properties. Results: After barrel process, hardness and tensile strength of CA sheet were increased. However, bending strength and impact strength were decreased. It is suggested the CA sheet had became rather stiff state (brittle). Also, in degradation temperature region of plasticizer, about 3% of reduction in plasticizer weight was confirmed upon TGA analysis. Conclusions: Glasses frame process, especially in the barrel process have a profound influence on the properties of CA sheet owing to reduction of total amount of plasticizer.
