  • Advances in MEMS and CMOS technologies have motivated the development of low cost/power sensors and wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSN). The WMSNs were created to ubiquitously harvest multimedia content. Such networks have allowed researchers and engineers to glimpse at new Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Systems, such as remote monitoring of biosignals for telemedicine networks. These systems require the acquisition of a large number of data streams that are simultaneously generated by multiple distributed devices. This paradigm of data generation and transmission is known as event-streaming. In order to be useful to the application, the collected data requires a preprocessing called data fusion, which entails the temporal alignment task of multimedia data. A practical way to perform this task is in a centralized manner, assuming that the network nodes only function as collector entities. However, by following this scheme, a considerable amount of redundant information is transmitted to the central entity. To decrease such redundancy, data fusion must be performed in a collaborative way. In this paper, we propose a collaborative data alignment approach for event-streaming. Our approach identifies temporal relationships by translating temporal dependencies based on a timeline to causal dependencies of the media involved.

  • This paper proposes a sensor-fusion technique where the data sets for the previous moments are properly transformed and fused into the current data sets to enable accurate measurement, such as, distance to an obstacle and location of the service robot itself. In the conventional fusion schemes, the measurement is dependent on the current data sets. As the results, more of sensors are required to measure a certain physical parameter or to improve the accuracy of the measurement. However, in this approach, instead of adding more sensors to the system, the temporal sequence of the data sets are stored and utilized for the measurement improvement. Theoretical basis is illustrated by examples and the effectiveness is proved through the simulations. Finally, the new space and time sensor fusion(STSF) scheme is applied to the control of a mobile robot in an unstructured environment as well as structured environment.

  • This paper presents a new morphological spatio-temporal segmentation algorithm. The algorithm incorporates intensity and motion information simultaneously, and uses morphological tools such as morphological filters and watershed algorithm. The procedure toward complete segmetnation consists of three steps: joint marker extraction, boundary decision, and motion-based region fusion. By incorporating spatial and temporal information simultaneously, we can obtain visually meaningful segmentation results. Simulation results demonstrates the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • Radiometric normalization with multi-temporal satellite images is essential for time series analysis and change detection. Generally, relative radiometric normalization, which is an image-based method, is performed, and histogram matching is a representative method for normalizing the non-linear properties. However, since it utilizes global statistical information only, local information is not considered at all. Thus, this paper proposes a histogram matching method considering local information. The proposed method divides histograms based on density, mean, and standard deviation of image intensities, and performs histogram matching locally on the sub-histogram. The matched histogram is then further partitioned and this process is performed again, iteratively, controlled with the wasserstein distance. Finally, the proposed method is compared to global histogram matching. The experimental results show that the proposed method is visually and quantitatively superior to the conventional method, which indicates the applicability of the proposed method to the radiometric normalization of multi-temporal images with non-linear properties.

  • Satellite-based land surface temperature (LST) has been used as one of the major parameters in various climate and environmental models. Especially, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST is the most widely used satellite-based LST product due to its spatiotemporal coverage (1 km spatial and sub-daily temporal resolutions) and longevity (> 20 years). However, there is an increasing demand for LST products with finer spatial resolution (e.g., 10-250 m) over regions such as urban areas. Therefore, various methods have been proposed to produce high-resolution MODIS-like LST less than 250 m (e.g., 100 m). The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of recent research trends and challenges for the downscaling of MODIS LST. Based on the recent literature survey for the past decade, the downscaling techniques classified into three groups-kernel-driven, fusion-based, and the combination of kernel-driven and fusion-based methods-were reviewed with their pros and cons. Then, five open issues and challenges were discussed: uncertainty in LST retrievals, low thermal contrast, the nonlinearity of LST temporal change, cloud contamination, and model generalization. Future research directions of LST downscaling were finally provided.

  • Face classification has wide applications in security and surveillance. However, this technique presents various challenges caused by pose, illumination, and expression changes. Face recognition with long-distance images involves additional challenges, owing to focusing problems and motion blurring. Multiple frames under varying spatial or temporal settings can acquire additional information, which can be used to achieve improved classification performance. This study investigates the effectiveness of multi-frame decision-level fusion with photon-counting linear discriminant analysis. Multiple frames generate multiple scores for each class. The fusion process comprises three stages: score normalization, score validation, and score combination. Candidate scores are selected during the score validation process, after the scores are normalized. The score validation process removes bad scores that can degrade the final output. The selected candidate scores are combined using one of the following fusion rules: maximum, averaging, and majority voting. Degraded facial images are employed to demonstrate the robustness of multi-frame decision-level fusion in harsh environments. Out-of-focus and motion blurring point-spread functions are applied to the test images, to simulate long-distance acquisition. Experimental results with three facial data sets indicate the efficiency of the proposed decision-level fusion scheme.

  • HDR(High dynamic range) imaging is a technique to represent a dynamic range of real world. Exposure fusion is a method to obtain a pseudo-HDR image and it directly fuses multi-exposure images instead of generating the true-HDR image. However, it results ghost artifacts while fusing the multi-exposure images with moving objects. To solve this drawback, temporal consistency assessment is proposed to remove moving objects. Firstly, multi-level threshold bitmap and brightness bitmap are proposed. In addition, hue-angle constancy map between multi-exposure images is proposed for compensating a bitmap. Then, two bitmaps are combined as a temporal weight map. Spatial domain image quality assessment is used to generate a spatial weight map. Finally, two weight maps are applied at each multi-exposure image and combined to get the pseudo-HDR image. In experiments, the proposed method reduces ghost artifacts more than previous methods. The quantitative ghost-free evaluation of the proposed method is also less than others.
