Chromatographic Separation of Xanthine Derivatives on Single and Mixed-Template Imprinted Polymers

  • We developed in the present study molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs), using single templates (pentoxifylline, caffeine and theophylline) and mixed-templates (pentoxifylline-caffeine, pentoxifylline-theophylline and caffeine-theophylline). The MIPs were prepared with methacrylic acid (MAA) as the monomer, ethylene glycol dimetharylate (EGDMA) as the crosslinker and 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as the initiator. The obtained polymer particles (particle size after grinding was about 25-35 ${\mu}$m) were packed into a HPLC column (3.9 mm i.d. ${\times}$ 150 mm). The selectivity and chromatographic characteristics of the MIPs were studied using acetonitrile as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. UV detector wavelength was set at 270 nm. Different single template MIPs showed different molecular recognitions to the templates and the structurally analogues, according to the rigidity and steric hindrance of the compounds. Recognition was improved on the mixed-template MIPs as a result of the cooperation or sum effect of the templates, whereas on the pentoxifylline-theophylline imprinted polymer, the highest selectivity and affinity were obtained. Separations of the test compounds on different polymers were also investigated.

Low Temperature Sintering of BNKT Lead-Free Piezoelectric Ceramics Using CuO-Coated Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 Templates (산화구리가 피복된 Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 틀입자를 이용한 BNKT 무연 압전 세라믹스의 저온소성 연구)

  • This study investigated the low temperature sintering with various templates of Bi-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. The effects of using CuO-coated Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 templates on the sintering behavior as well as the dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties of Bi1/2(Na0.78K0.22)1/2TiO3 (BNKT) ceramics have been examined. In comparison with the specimens sintered with the Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 templates without CuO coating, those sintered with the CuO-coated Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 templates showed larger template sizes as well as a larger electric field induced strain (Smax/Emax) of 422 pm/V after sintering at temperatures as low as 975℃. These results are promising for low-cost multilayer ceramic actuator applications.

Dependence of Gas Sensing Properties of Embossed TiO2 Thin Films on Links Between Hollow Hemispheres (엠보싱 TiO2 박막에서 링크 형상 제어에 따른 가스 감도 변화)

  • Embossed $TiO_2$ thin films with high surface areas are achieved using soft-templates composed of monolayer polystyrene beads. The form of links between the beads in the templates is controlled by varying the $O_2$ plasma etching time on the templates, resulting in various templates with close-linked, nano-linked, and isolated beads. Room-temperature deposition of $TiO_2$ on the plasma-treated templates and calcination at $550^{\circ}C$ result in embossed films with tailored links between anatase $TiO_2$ hollow hemispheres. Although all the embossed films have similar surface areas, the sensitivity of films with nano-linked $TiO_2$ hollow hemispheres to 500 ppm CO and ethanol gases are much higher than that of films with close-linked and isolated hollow hemispheres, and the detection limits of them are as low as 0.6 ppm for CO and 0.1 ppm for ethanol. The strong correlation of sensitivity with the form of links between hollow hemispheres reveals the critical role of potential barriers formed at the links. The facile, large-scale, and on-chip fabrication of embossed $TiO_2$ films with nano-linked hollow hemispheres on Si substrate and the high sensitivity without the aid of additives give us a sustainable competitive advantage over various methods for the fabrication of highly sensitive $TiO_2$-based sensors.

A Quantitative and Qualitative Study on Virtual Makeup of Instant Beautifying Application - Focus on Color and Shape (화장품 앱에서 가상 메이크업 템플릿과 메이크업 룩과의 관계에 관한 연구)

  • Inspired by the increasing popularity of cosmetic-related mobile application as a tool for instant beautification, the present study examined colors of virtual makeup templates and makeup looks. A survey study was performed by thirty-six respondents to determine the top three desirable virtual makeup templates among nineteen templates. The templates of 'Bella', 'Hilary' and 'Cara' were then analyzed by makeup specialists and color experts for the evaluation of their makeup design and colors. Each color feature of three makeup templates were also evaluated through statistical analysis of ANOVA on the measure of $L^*a^*b^*$ crossed with five types of face elements on three types of virtual makeup images. Overall results indicate that Korean female users in their 20s and 30s preferred a similar makeup concept appeared in makeup template and key worlds. They also preferred a pale skin tone with higher lightness and a slightly higher saturated lip color as an emphasis than other features.

  • Polymeric hydrogel particles were fabricated to demonstrate the scale-up possibilities with the Particle Replication In Non-wetting Templates (PRINT) process. A permanently etched, specifically designed master was made on a silicon wafer using conventional photolithography, then reactive ion etching. The master and substrate were used repeatedly to make a large number of identical elastomeric perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) replica molds. The PFPE replica molds were used to fabricate and harvest individual, monodisperse micron-sized particles using the PRINT process. A water-soluble polymer adhesive was used as a sacrificial layer for harvesting particles. Particles were composed of biodegradable poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-diA), and aminoethylacrylate (AEM) and 2-acryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (AETMAC) were added to them for improving the uptake of the cells. This study suggested PRINT used to produce the uniformed and shape specific biodegradable polymer is the effective technique for the non viral vector for the drug and the gene delivery.

Dictionary Attack on Functional Transform-Based Cancelable Fingerprint Templates

  • Recently, Ratha and others proposed a cancelable biometrics scheme which transforms an original fingerprint template into a new one using a noninvertible transformation. However, we show that the original template is recovered by a dictionary attack if two transformed templates originating from it are revealed. In our attack, we simulate the transformation and construct a set of possible pre-images for each transformed template. Then, we find the correct pre-image by computing the intersection of these sets. We present an algorithm implementing this idea as well as successful experimental results.

Segmentation Algorithm for Wafer ID using Active Multiple Templates Model

  • This paper presents a method to segment wafer ID marks on poor quality images under uncontrolled lighting conditions of the semiconductor process. The active multiple templates matching method is suggested to search ID areas on wafers and segment them into meaningful regions and it would have been impossible to recognize characters using general OCR algorithms. This active template model is designed by applying a snake model that is used for active contour tracking. Active multiple template model searches character areas and segments them into single characters optimally, tracking each character that can vary in a flexible manner according to string configurations. Applying active multiple templates, the optimization of the snake energy is done using Greedy algorithm, to maximize its efficiency by automatically controlling each template gap. These vary according to the configuration of character string. Experimental results using wafer images from real FA environment are presented.

Recognition of Object ID marks in FA process from Active Template Model

  • This paper presents a method to segment object ID marks on poor quality images under uncontrolled lighting conditions of FA inspection process. The method is based on multiple templates and normalized gray-level correlation (NGC) method. We propose a multiple template method, called as ATM (Active Template Model) which uses combinational relation of multiple templates from model templates to match and segment several characters of the inspection images. Conventional Snakes algorithm provides a good methodology to model the functional of ATM. To increase the computation speed to segment the ID mark regions, we introduce the Dynamic Programming based algorithm. Experimental results using images from real FA environment are presented.

Synthesis of Stepped Carbon Nanotubes in Anodic Aluminum Oxide Templates (알루미나 형틀을 이용한 서로 다른 직경을 갖는 모양을 가진 탄소나노튜브의 합성)

  • Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) with pores of various diameter, density, and thickness values was obtained through control of the anodization parameters including voltage, temperature, pore widening time, anodization time, etc. The pore diameter was controlled by a pore widening in an etchant, and alumina templates having stepped nano-channels were fabricated by repetition of anodization and pore widening processes. Stepped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were then grown on the stepped AAO templates by pyrolysis of acetylene without using the catalyst. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images revealed that CNTs have a multi-wall structure made of graphite flakes of several nm sizes. The current-voltage characteristic of the sloped and linear CNTs were also examined.

Accurate Corner Detection using 4-directional Edge Labeling and Corner Positioning Templates

  • Corner positioning templates are proposed in order to detect the accurate positions of corners that are extracted using 4-directional edge labeling. Top-down and bottom-up directional labeling are used to label the edge segments with four kinds of labels according to their directions. The points whose labels have changed are then determined as corners. The exact positions of the missing corners due to the disconnected edges are detected through the corner positioning templates that are determined according to the labels of start-points and end-points after the two-pass edge labeling. Experiment results show that the proposed method can detect the exact positions of the real corners.
