In this study, we investigated the perceptions of science-related careers and career education among middle school science teachers. Sixty-four science teachers experienced in teaching unit 7 in the first year of middle school participated. The results of the study revealed that not only careers in science but also careers with science were found to be quite high when teachers were asked to provide examples of science-related careers. Jobs related to research/engineering, which are careers in science, comprised the highest proportion of teachers' answers, followed by jobs related to education/law/social welfare/police/firefighting/military, and health/medical, which are careers with science. However, the proportion of jobs mentioned related to installation/maintenance/production was extremely low. The skills required for science-related careers were mainly perceived to consist of tools for working and ways of working. The number of skills classified under living in the world was perceived to be extremely low across most careers, irrespective of career type. Most teachers only taught unit 7 for two to four sessions and devoted little time to science-related career education, even in general science classes. In the free semester system, a significant number of teachers responded that they provide science-related career education for more than 8 hours. Teachers mainly utilize lecture, discussion/debate, and self-study activities. Meanwhile, in the free semester system, the resource-based learning method was utilized at a high proportion compared to other class situations. Teachers generally made much use of media materials, with the use of textbooks and teacher guides found to be lower than expected. There were also cases of using materials supported by science museums or the Ministry of Education. Teachers preferred to implementing student-centered classes and utilizing various teaching and learning methods. The purpose of this study was to examine elementary teachers' perception on birds and problems on teaching it. For this study, the science textbooks from 3rd grade to 6th grade according to the 7th national curriculum were analyzed. Results revealed that, firstly, there were 34 bird species recorded and these were described 55 times in the surveyed textbooks. Secondly, the survey showed that $20\%$ of the teachers were interested in birds despite the fact that $98\%$ of them had no special knowledge about birds nor had studied them in college. Additionally, it was revealed that $41\%$ of the teachers felt lacking in specialist knowledge about birds and this lead to difficulties in teaching on this subject. Thirdly, academic backgrounds had an affect teachers' perceptions on teaching this area. The teachers' levels of interest in birds and the teachers' ratio of teaching on this topic tended to increase as their academic careers developed, and the proportion of male teachers in this category were higher than female teachers. To overcome difficulty in teaching on this area, it is suggested that a reconstitution of subject materials, as well as a revision of the teachers' guidebooks be undertaken.

In this study, classroom instructions of teachers who participate in the science teachers' community were videotaped and analyzed to understand their teaching professionalism. Among the "Standards for teaching evaluation of science instruction" developed by Korea Education Curriculum and Assessment, 12 evaluation elements were selected and used for data analysis. First of all, the results indicate that most of the teachers show the highest teaching level in the interaction between student and teacher, and the lowest in the statement of teaching object as the teaching evaluation element. Second, from the viewpoint of the teaching level, all of the teachers at the superior level were veterans whose teaching careers have spanned longer than 15 years. It was found that they used various teaching materials in class and designed meaningful learning programs for their students. Compared with teachers at the superior level, beginning teachers used limited teaching materials due to their lack of experience. In addition, their instruction falls short of flexible management in teaching. The results show that they tend to teach in a somewhat rigid style that does not have sufficient positive interaction with students.

In many countries, secondary school science is no longer solely for those destined for careers in science, medicine or engineering and both boys and girls study biology, chemistry and physics. In Japan, secondary science has been studied by boys and girls as a compulsory subject since the establishment of the modem school system in the late 19th Century. However, although 'science for all' is becoming the norm, it appears that science is less popular with girls than it is with boys, and that lower-attaining students are not adequately catered for in Japan and elsewhere. In this paper, the author investigates gender issues in the secondary science curriculum and examines the curriculum for future scientists using a historical perspective and focusing on the case of Japan. An analysis of two historical issues, gender and the curriculum for future scientists, found that, firstly, the science curriculum needs to contain a clear statement of its aims, and, secondly, that the secondary science teacher is one of the most important factors influencing science teaching particularly for girls. ost important factors influencing science teaching especially for girls.
