The Use of Gambits in the English Language Classroom

  • Learners and users of a second language have to resort to a variety of conversational strategies or structures to enable them to communicate effectively and competently. Factors affecting effective communication among English as a second or English as foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners are diverse in nature because of different socio-cultural backgrounds. Gambits as a conversational strategy are used to a large extent and teachers must be made aware of such conversational strategies used by English as second or foreign language learners. Thus, studies focusing on conversational strategies among ESL/EFL learners in the English language classroom are important in order to identify the types of conversational strategies used and to help teachers to understand the appropriate conversational strategies and structures. Such understanding can be used to guide learners to use correct conversational strategies when communicating in English. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the use of gambits as a communication strategy in conversation among non-native speakers of English in an English as a second language(ESL) context based on Kellers conversational strategy signals. Utilizing Teacher Noticing within a Representation of an Elementary Engineering Lesson to Support Responsive Teaching in the Classroom

  • Teacher noticing has been termed consequential to teaching because what you see and do not see impacts decisions made within the classroom. Further, how a teacher responds to student thinking depends on what a teacher sees in student thinking. Within this study we sought to understand what teachers noticed within an engineering lesson and the decisions made as a result of that noticing. Findings indicate that student teachers and cooperating teachers drew on their pedagogical knowledge for decisions, rather than taking up the integrated content of student thinking and understanding. These findings serve as a guide for the experiences needed to engage in the complex work of teaching or, more specifically, implementing engineering into instruction through a responsive teaching frame.

우리나라 초등학교 수학에서 사각형의 상호 관계 지도 변천 재음미 - 1차에서 3차 교육과정까지의 변화를 중심으로- (A Study on the Mutural Relation of Quadrilateral in History of Mathematics Education of South Korea)

  • 이 논문에서는 사각형의 상호 관계가 우리나라 교육과정에 어떻게 자리 잡게 되었는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 1차, 2차, 3차 교육과정기에 발행된 국가수준 교육과정 문서, 교과서는 물론 당시 발간된 교사용 지도서, 교육과정 해설서, 실험용 교사용 지도서 등을 고찰하였다. 사각형의 상호 관계는 3차 교육과정에서 본격적으로 교육내용을 자리 잡았으며, 집합의 포함 관계를 지도할 수 있는 소재로서 주목을 받았다. 특히 사각형의 정의를 바탕으로 상호 관계를 이해하도록 하였는데, 이는 수학적 정의의 중요한 학문적 기능인, 범주화와 그를 통한 논증의 용이성과 관련 시킬 수 있다. 이 논문의 연구결과는, 국가수준에서 수학교육내용으로서 사각형의 상호 관계의 적정성을 판단할 때 기초적인 창조 자료가 될 것으로 기대한다.

해운산업 기초인력의 이탈 원인에 관한 실증 연구 (The Breaking away Factors Analysis of the Preliminary Basic Seamen)

  • Today the number of high school drop-outs is increasing , and also it is serious social problems. But almost factor analyses on the drop-outs are projected by questionnaire. This paper find out by the real data form the concerned documents what factors of drop-outs are. In order to accomplish this study purpose, the methodology are used such as Fequency Analysis, Correlation Analysis, Crosstabulation Analysis. Through the this study this paper could siome suggestions as followings. The first , all education authority should analysis what factors of drop-outs and what drop-out situation is . The second, every teacher should counsel with all problem students sincerely regarding to their characters, future occupations, life course and etc. The third, the most and worst important factors of drop-out is runaway. Because it is very difficult for teacher to teach, lead and guide a runaway student, therefore thepreventino of runaway is efficient for reducing of drop-outs. The fouth, the students violating rules are retrained propoerly in view of guide for good path. The fifth, besides of the above factors. there are drop-out factors such as the health, disease, dafety accidents . All parents. teachers, and students should try their best to solve. To the end, education authority try to encourage teachers to do their role with maximum sense of duty.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the elementary teachers' conceptions on the inquiry activity about 'make a fossil model' focusing the 6th, 7th, 2007 revised, and 2009 revised elementary science textbook. This study is intended to find causes of teachers' conceptions and to derive educational implications. We have analyzed questionnaires which were collected from 77 elementary school teachers. It was carried out about comparisons actual fossil with fossil model in each step of the inquiry activity, the lesson goal, the thought for changes of the inquiry activity, the improvement of the inquiry and conception related fossil. Teachers have a general understanding about the contents of the inquiry activity but some of them have partially incorrect understanding. And they emphasize the understanding of the concept on lesson goal. It is necessary to improve inquiry activity reflecting teachers' thinking about the merit and weaknesses. There was not statistically difference in understanding of fossil related concepts according to teachers' career, teaching or training experience. Through this research, there is a need to improve a textbook, a guide book, a teachers' training. So, teachers who have professionalism about science textbook be able to teach students.

교과서와 교사용 지도서에 제시된 소리의 성질 단원의 파동개념에 대한 초등 교사들의 이해도, 확신도와 친숙도 분석 (A Study on Elementary School Teachers' Understanding of, Certainty in, and Familiarity with Wave Concepts in Textbook and Teacher's Guidebook)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze elementary school teachers' understanding, certainty, and familiarity with 13 key concepts of wave physics that are presented in textbook and teacher's guidebook. 123 elementary school teachers answered concept tests and questionnaires. In the results to these tests and questionnaires, teachers demonstrated a high level of understanding and high certainty in understanding with regard to the concepts of sound generation, effect of medium on wave, timbre, wavelength, and trough and crest of wave. For the topics of sound velocity, wave reflection and wave transmission, teachers demonstrated a high level of understanding but low certainty in understanding. With regard to sound propagation, teachers demonstrated a low level of understanding and an improperly high certainty in that low understanding. Teachers lacked knowledge, i.e., displayed a low level of understanding and low certainty in sound strength, sound frequency, constructive interference and destructive interference. In constructive and destructive interference, the teachers also displayed a low level of familiarity. We analyzed the differences in teacher's understanding, certainty, and familiarity according to teacher demographics defined by the teacher's gender, teaching experience with concepts of sound, career, curriculum track while in high school, and major in university. There were no significant differences in understanding, certainty, or familiarity as defined by gender, teaching experience, and career. However, these displays of knowledge were affected by the teacher's curriculum track in high school and their major. These results suggest that the teacher's understanding of, familiarity with, and certainty in wave physics concepts are more influenced by their learning experience than by their teaching experience. Therefore, we suggest additional learning opportunities for teachers (such as teacher training programs) in order to improve teacher knowledge and correct teacher misconceptions in wave physics.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop lesson plans. teaching guide, and teaching materials applying practical reasoning teaching model in the area of ’human development and family relationship’in middle school home economics. The practical reasoning teaching model consists of five factors: Desired results, Awareness of context, Alternative approaches, Consequences of action, and Action. This study based on practical reasoning has following process: Curriculum development. Developing lesson pan, teaching material, an teaching guide, Experimental teaching and evaluation. Feedback, Production of CD-Rom. Teaching guide includes lesson plan, workbook multimedia materials and teaching resources. Especially teaching guide in CD-Rom can be used effectively in the actual teaching. In the classroom, this teaching model accomplished active and interesting participation of teachers and students. It is proposed that practical reasoning teaching model should be applied to other areas of home economics. In addition various teaching materials based on practical reasoning need to developed.

교원임용 시험을 준비하는 중등학교 기간제 교사들의 교직생활과 삶에 관한 질적 연구 (A Qualitative Study on the Lives of Non-Tenured, Secondary School Teachers Who Are Preparing for Teachers' Exam)

  • 본 연구에서는 교원임용 시험을 준비하고 있는 기간제 교사들의 교직생활과 삶을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 10명의 기간제 교사들을 대상으로 반구조화된, 일대일 면담을 진행하였고, 합의적 질적 연구 방법을 사용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 대부분의 참여자들은 경제적 필요를 충족시키고 자신의 꿈인 교사생활의 기쁨과 보람을 맛보며, 임용 시험에 실질적인 도움을 얻고자 기간제 교사직을 선택한 것으로 나타났다. 기간제 교사생활에서 경험하는 어려움으로는 학교 관리자로부터의 차별 대우가 가장 두드러졌으며, 이로 인한 자존감의 저하와 정체성의 혼란을 겪고 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 이러한 차별이 오히려 임용 시험 준비에 대한 강한 의지로 전환되어 참여자들은 안정되고 당당한 교사 신분을 얻기 위해 임용시험준비에 전념하고 있다고 진술하였다. 하지만, 시험준비 과정에서 부족한 공부시간, 끝없는 공부양, 다양한 삶의 역할 수행, 체력 저하, 난해한 시험 유형, 이전 실패경험에서 오는 불안감 등으로 상당한 스트레스를 경험하는 것으로 확인되었다. 연구결과를 토대로 향후 연구의 방향에 대해 제언하였다.

한국의 지역적 특성을 고려한 STS 모듈 및 그 평가 방법의 개발 (Development of STS Modules Reflecting Korean local Concerns and Their Evaluation Tools)

  • 본 연구는 한국이라는 지역적 상황에서 고유하게 제기되는 과학-기술-사회 문제들 중 네 가지 과학-기술-사회 관련 문제를 주제로 한 한국의 지역적 관심을 고려한 STS 모듈과 그 모듈이 학교 현장에서 유용하게 쓰일 수 있도록 하기 위한 적절한 과정 평가 방법을 개발하는 것을 그 목적으로 하는 STS 교재 개발 연구이다. 본 연구에서 개발된 모듈은 모듈 1. 보신식품, 정말 먹어야 하나요?, 모듈 2. 외래종과 토착종의 생존경쟁, 모듈 3. 시화호의 교훈, 모듈 4. 음식물쓰레기, 돈이라면 버리시겠습니까? 등 네 가지이다. 각 모듈들마다 고유한 방법으로 학생 활동 과정을 평가할 수 있는 과정평가 방법을 준거형과 서술형의 두 가지 형식으로 새로 개발하여 도입하였는데, 이는 과학 수행평가 방법에 관한 아이디어가 절실히 필요한 일선 과학교사들에게 평가 방법의 아이디어 뱅크 역할도 겸할 수 있다.

과학 지식 생성 모형을 기반으로 한 초등학생용 거미 탐구 프로그램 개발 (Development of a Spider Inquiry Program for Elementary Students based on the Scientific-Knowledge Generation Model)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a spider inquiry program for elementary school students based on the scientific-knowledge generating model. For the purposes of this study, we selected three species of snider (e.g. Pardosa astrigera, Argiope bruennichii, Nephila clavata) which were easily found in a school garden by elementary school students. The spider inquiry program was based on a model of the process of scientific-knowledge generation, and consisted of two sections: for students and teachers. The students' program was designed to generate scientific-knowledge, whilst the teachers' program was designed to guide the inquiry smoothly even in the case of teachers who lack experience in inquiry activities or possess limited subject knowledge on spiders. As a result, this program was found to have an influence on generating the scientific-knowledge of elementary students and the results further suggest that it may be helpful to teachers conducting an inquiry activity. Additionally, this program could be used as a selective activity lesson such as a science inquiry lesson, or as a biology inquiry class, as a weekend life experience study or as an activity on a science camp.
