The lyotropic mesomorphism of lamellar liquid crystalline phase was examined by observing the swelling behavior of Distearoylphosphatidylcholine(DSPC) in glycerin and panthenol without water. The lyotropic mesomorphism was examined by using DSC, XRDs and Cryo-SEM. Increase of two polar solvents under non-hydrous condition showed distinctive differences in the lyotropic mesomorphism from forming different anisotropic structures with DSPC. Glycerin did not affect to the crystalline region of lamellar phase, whereas typical swelling mesomorphism was shown in the noncrystalline region. In contrast, panthenol showed some effect on the crystalline region, but common swelling mesomorphism was found in the non-crystalline region. In this case, the isopropyl and propyl groups in panthenol were the main factor to affect to the lipophilic domain in the crystalline region of lamellar phase. Also, it was found that the formation of well-arranged lamellar structure only by introducing glycerin and panthenol as a solvent without water, was possible. These results were confirmed by examination of the swelling mesomorphism of liquid crystal membrane triggered by introducing the two polar solvents.
Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) [P(NIPAAm-co-AN)] copolymers with AN content of up to 10 mol% and their hydrogels were synthesized using water as a reaction medium, and the effects of AN unit incorporation on the critical gel transition temperature(CGTT) and swelling behaviors of the hydrogels were investigated. The CGTT of the copolymer hydrogel was $30{\sim}32\;^{\circ}C$, decreasing with increasing AN content. Below CGTT, swelling rate and equilibrium swelling ratio of the copolymer hydrogel decreased with increasing AN content. On the other hand, it exhibited faster deswelling and lower equilibrium deswelling ratio with increasing AN content above CGTT.

Superporous Hydrogels (SPHs) have been extensively investigated for various biomedical applications due to their fast swelling and superabsorbent properties. In this study, glycol chitosan that is one of most abundant natural polymers was used as a cross-linking agent instead of bisacrylamide (BIS), which is a broadly used crosslinking agent for preparation of SPHs. Glycol chitosan was modified to have reactive vinyl groups by chemical conjugation with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The vinyl group-containing glycol chitosan (GC-GMA) was characterized by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR measurements. SPHs have been prepared in various synthetic conditions to establish the optimum synthetic process for making superporous structure, where the inner pores are interconnected to each other to form a open channel structure. Various SPHs with different GC-GMA contents have been successfully prepared and have been observed to show faster swelling properties than other conventional SPHs. From the study on the swelling behavior of SPHs, the GC-GMA content is considered to be an important factor for controlling their swelling properties.
Poloxamer-poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were prepared via matrix polymerization of acrylic acid with poloxamer prepolymer. The equilibrium s welling of poloxamer/PAA IPNs was determined in various pH medium. The swelling of poloxamer/PAA IPNs was more affected by pH difference compared with the swelling of homo PAA gel due to protonation and deprotonation of the PAA network, followed by reversible formation and dissociation of the interpolymer complex due to hydrogen bonding between acidic hydrogens and ether oxygens. Nonionic/anionic/cationic drugs were incorporated into IPN matriceds as a model drug and their release behavior was studied. Nonionic, drug revealed release patterns depending solely on pH dependent swelling kinetics. In contrast, the release of ionic drugs was significantly affected by ionic drug-polymer interaction as well as the swelling kinetics.
To graft N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) onto alginate, varying dosages of ${\gamma}$-rays were irradiated onto alginate films in deionized water and methanol media, which are non-solvents of alginate. We investigated the hydrogels graft ratio, mechanical strength, swelling kinetics and ratio, and behavior with respect to drug release. The graft yield of NIPAAm increased upon increasing the irradiation dose. The use of the aqueous solution increased the graft yield relative to that obtained in methanol. The mechanical strength of the grafted hydrogels increased after grafting with NIPAAm. In a study of the swelling kinetics, we found that all hydrogels reached an equilibrium swollen state within 3 h. The equilibrium swelling ratio of the hydrogels decreased upon increasing the irradiation dose. The swelling ratio of the hydrogels decreased dramatically between 30 and 35$^{\circ}C$ because phase separation of NIPAAm occurred at 32$^{\circ}C$. The swelling process, with respect to the temperature change, was repeatable. An NIPAAm-grafted alginate containing a drug sustained its release rate until 3 h after an initial high drug release caused by a burst effect.
The U-Zr or U-TRU-Zr cylindrical metallic fuel slug used in fast reactors is known to swell significantly and to grow during irradiation. In neutronics simulations of metallic-fueled fast reactors, it is assumed that the slug has swollen and contacted cladding, and the bonding sodium has been removed from the fuel region. In this research, a realistic burnup-dependent fuel-swelling simulation was performed using Monte Carlo code McCARD for a single-batch compact sodium-cooled breed-and-burn reactor by considering the fuel-swelling behavior reported from the irradiation test results in EBR-II. The impacts of the realistic burnup-dependent fuel swelling are identified in terms of the reactor neutronics performance, such as core lifetime, conversion ratio, axial power distribution, and local burnup distributions. It was found that axial fuel growth significantly deteriorated the neutron economy of a breed-and-burn reactor and consequently impaired its neutronics performance. The bonding sodium also impaired neutron economy, because it stayed longer in the blanket region until the fuel slug reached 2% burnup.
The purpose of this study was to use a ternary polymeric matrix system for high drug loading of a highly soluble drug for controlled release delivery. The controlled drug delivery of diltiazem HCl (solubility > 50% in water at $25^{\circ}C$) with high loading dose (the final loading dose of drug was 34%) from a ternary polymeric matrix (gelatin, pectin, HPMC) was successfully accomplished. This simple monolithic system with 240 mg drug loading provided near zero-order release over a 24 hour-period by which time the system was completely dissolved. The release kinetics of diltiazem HCl tablet with high loading dose from the designed ternary polymeric system was dependent on the ratios of HPMC : pectin binary mixture. The release rate increased as pectin : HPMC ratio were increased. Swelling behavior of the ternary system and the ionic interaction of formulation components with cationic diltiazem molecule appear to control drug diffusion and the release kinetics. Comparable release profiles between commercial product and the designed system were obtained. The binding study between gelatin with diltiazem HCl showed the presence of two binding sites for drug interaction with subsequent controlled diffusion upon swelling. This designed delivery system is easy to manufacture and drug release behavior is highly reproducible and offers advantages over the existing commercial product.
In this work, the emulsified asphalt with high phase stability and storage stability was prepared by using phase inversion emulsification and the surfactant mixed with cationic and nonionic surfactants. It was found that the asphalt together with Span 20, nonionic surfactant and DDA (Dimethyl Dodecyl Amine), cationic surfactant showed the most stable phase. The phase stability of the emulsified asphalt, therefore, was investigated through the particle size with mixed surfactant content, rheology behavior and Zeta potential value; the particle size decreased with the increase of the mixed surfactant content but the viscosity increased. The shear thinning behaviors and the Zeta potential value with 50 mV~60 mV were shown, which was found to be considered stable. In addition, SBR latex(Styrene-butadiene-rubber) and water dispersed Epoxy (EPD) were used to enhance the physical properties of the emulsified asphalt. The swelling and adhesion features of the emulsified asphalt were also studied with $CaCO_3$, Silica, and Montmorillonite (MMT). It was shown that the addition of SBR latex and MMT can be another way to improve the physical properties of the emulsified asphalt in that the lowest swelling feature was found.

Internal fibrillation of pulp fiber is an important factor affecting paper properties. Internal fibrillation of pulp fiber is usually introduced with several kinds of modifications of fiber by the mechanical treatment such as refining, high shear and/or high consistency mixing, etc. Unfortunately there are no standardized methods that can characterize the extent of internal fibrillation and its contribution on the paper properties. The purpose of this study is to try and find the potential methods that can characterize the internal fibrillation of pulp fiber quantitatively. Softwood bleached kraft pulp was treated with Hobart mixer to introduce the internal fibrillation without the significant fiber damage and external fibrillation. The extent of internal fibrillation was increased with the increase of mechanical treatment consistency. Several fiber properties were measured to find the potential means that could characterize and quantity the internal fibrillation. Laminated area could not be used as a means for quantifying the internal fibrillation because of the effect of swelling and the different internal fibrillation behavior at different mechanical treatment consistency. Micro and macro internal fibrillation models were proposed for describing the different behavior for the mechanical treatment at low and high consistencies of pulp. The Internal fibrillation showed good correlation with swelling of fiber wall. This trend was confirmed through the measurement of wall thickness and/or cross section area of fiber. Therefore the internal fibrillation possibly can be described as the indices indicating the change of wall thickness and/or cross section area.

We present a novel process to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) metallic patterns from 3D printed polymeric structures utilizing different hygroscopic swelling behavior of two different polymeric materials. 3D patterns are printed with two different polymers as cube shape. The surface of the 3D printed polymeric structures is plated with nickel by an electroless plating method. The nickel patterns on the surface of the 3D printed cube shape structure are formed by removing sacrificial layers using the difference in the rate of hygroscopic swelling between two printing polymer materials. The hygroscopic behavior on the interfaced structure was modeled with COMSOL Multiphysics. The surface and electrical properties of the fabricated three-dimensional patterns were analyzed and characterized.
