The effects of blasting and acidic treatment on the corrosion characteristics of dental implant fabricated with Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been researched by using electrochemical methods. The fabricated implants were cleaned and sandblasted by $Al_2O_3$ powder and then acidic treatment was carried out in nitric acid solution. The surface morphology were observed using scanning electron microscope. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiosat and EIS in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The potentio-dynamic test in 0.9% NaCl indicated that the corrosion potential of blasting and acidic treated implant was lower than that of non treated implant, but current density was higher than that of non treated implant. From the cyclic potentiodynamic test results of Ti implant, the passivation current density of blasting and acidic treated implant slightly higher than that of non treated implant. From A.C. impedance test results in 0.9% NaCl solution, polarization resistance($R_p$) value of blasting and acidic treated implant was lower than that of non treated implant. In case of blasting and acidic treated implant surface, the pits were observed in valley and crest of implant surface.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. A number of studies about the nano-treated surfaces of implants have been conducting along with micro-treated surfaces of implants. PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to get information for the clinical use of nano-treated surfaces compared with micro-treated surfaces by measuring removal torque and analyzing histological characteristics after the placement of various surface-treated implants on femurs of dogs. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Machined surface implants were used as a control group. 4 nano-treated surface implants and 3 micro-treated surface implants [resorbable blast media surface (RBM), sandblast and acid-etched surface (SAE), anodized RBM surface] were used as experimental groups. Removal torque values of implants were measured respectively and the histological analyses were conducted on both 4weeks and 8weeks after implant surgery. The surfaces of removed implants after measuring removal torque values were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 8 weeks. RESULTS. 1. Removal torque values of the nano-treated groups were lower than those of micro-treated groups. 2. Removal torque values were similar in the anodized RBM surface groups. 3. On the histological views, there was much of bone formation at 8 weeks, but there was no difference between 4 and 8 weeks, and between the types of implant surfaces as well. CONCLUSION. it is suggested that implant topography is more effective in removal torque test than surface chemistry. To get better clinical result, further studies should be fulfilled on the combined effect of surface topography and chemistry for the implant surface treatments.
In this study, surface characteristics of dental implant fixture with various manufacturing process have been researched using electrochemical methods. The dental implant fixture was selected with 5 steps by cleaning, surface treatment and sterilization with same size and screw structure; the 1st step-machined surface, 2nd step-cleaned by thinner and prosol solution, 3th step-surface treated by RBM (resorbable blasting media) method, 4th step-cleaned and dried, 5th step-sterilized by gamma-ray. The electrochemical behavior of dental implant fixture has been evaluated by using potentiostat (EG&G Co, 2273A) in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion surface was observed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The step 5 sample showed the cleaner and rougher surface than step 3 sample. The step 5 sample of implant fixture treated by RBM and gamma sterilization showed the low corrosion current density compared to others. Especially, the step 3 sample of implant fixture treated by RBM was presented the lowest value of corrosion resistance and the highest value of corrosion current density. The step 3 sample showed the low value of polarization resistance compared to other samples. In conclusion, the implant fixture treated with RBM and gamma sterilization has the higher corrosion resistance, and corrosion resistance depends on the step of manufacturing process.
Background: A compact passive oxide layer can grow on tantalum (Ta). It has been reported that this oxide layer can facilitate bone ingrowth in vivo though the development of bone-like apatite, which promotes hard and soft tissue adhesion. Thus, Ta surface treatment on facial implant materials may improve the tissue response, which could result in less fibrotic encapsulation and make the implant more stable on the bone surface. The purposes of this study were to verify whether surface treatment of facial implant materials using Ta can improve the biohistobiological response and to determine the possibility of potential clinical applications. Methods: Two different and commonly used implant materials, silicone and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), were treated via Ta ion implantation using a Ta sputtering gun. Ta-treated samples were compared with untreated samples using in vitro and in vivo evaluations. Osteoblast (MG-63) and fibroblast (NIH3T3) cell viability with the Ta-treated implant material was assessed, and the tissue response was observed by placing the implants over the rat calvarium (n = 48) for two different lengths of time. Foreign body and inflammatory reactions were observed, and soft tissue thickness between the calvarium and the implant as well as the bone response was measured. Results: The treatment of facial implant materials using Ta showed a tendency toward increased fibroblast and osteoblast viability, although this result was not statistically significant. During the in vivo study, both Ta-treated and untreated implants showed similar foreign body reactions. However, the Ta-treated implant materials (silicone and ePTFE) showed a tendency toward better histological features: lower soft tissue thickness between the implant and the underlying calvarium as well as an increase in new bone activity. Conclusion: Ta surface treatment using ion implantation on silicone and ePTFE facial implant materials showed the possibility of reducing soft tissue intervention between the calvarium and the implant to make the implant more stable on the bone surface. Although no statistically significant improvement was observed, Ta treatment revealed a tendency toward an improved biohistological response of silicone and ePTFE facial implants. Conclusively, tantalum treatment is beneficial and has the potential for clinical applications.
Purpose : This experiment examined the effects of anodization on commercially pure titanium implant fixtures. Material & methods : The implant fixtures were anodized at three different voltage levels, producing three different levels of oxidation on the surface of the fixure. Implant were divided into four groups according to the level of oxidation. Group 1 consist of the control group of machined surface implants, Group 2 implants were treated by anodizing to 100 voltage, Group 3 implants were treated by anodizing oxidation to 200 voltage Group 4 implants were treated by anodizing oxidation to 350 voltage. Surface morphology was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and the surface roughness was measured using NanoScan $E-1000^{\circledR}$. Implantation of the fixtures were performed using New Zealand white rabbits. $Periotest^{\circledR}$ value(PTV) resonance frequency analysis(RFA), and removal torque were measured in 0, 2, 4, 8, 12 weeks after implantation. Results : The results of the study were as follows: 1. Values for the measured surface roughness indicate statistically significant differences in Ra, Rq, and Rt values among group 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the top portion of the thread,(p<0.05) while values at the base of the threads indicated no significant difference in these values. 2. A direct correlation between the firming voltage, and surface roughness and irregularities were observed using scanning electron microscope. 3. No statistically significant differences were found between test groups regarding $Periotest^{\circledR}$ values. 4. Analysis of the data produced by RFA, significant differences were found between group 1 and group 4 at 12 weeks after implantation.(p<0.05) Conclusions : In conclusion, no significant differences could be found among test groups up to a certain level of forming voltage threshold, beyond this firming voltage threshold, statistically significant differences occurred as the surface area of the oxide layer increased with the increase in surface porosity, resulting in enhanced bone response and osseointegration.

Objectives: This study compared the impact of implant surface treatment on the stability and osseointegration of implants in dog mandibles. Materials and Methods: Six adult dogs received a total of 48 implants that were prepared using four different surface treatments; resorbable blast media (RBM), hydroxyapatite (HA), hydrothermal-treated HA, and sand blasting and acid etching (SLA). Implants were installed, and dogs were separated into 2- and 4-week groups. Implant stability was evaluated via Periotest M, Osstell Mentor, and removal torque analyzers. A histomorphometric analysis was also performed. Results: The stability evaluation showed that all groups generally had satisfactory values. The histomorphometric evaluation via a light microscope revealed that the HA surface implant group had the highest ratio of new bone formation on the entire fixture. The hydrothermal-treated HA surface implant group showed a high ratio of bone-to-implant contact in the upper half of the implant area. Conclusion: The hydrothermal-treated HA implant improved the bone-to-implant contact ratio on the upper fixture, which increased the implant stability.
The present study was performed to evaluate histomorphological difference in various surface-treated implants in beagle. Implants($Implantium^{(R)}$, Dentium Co. Korea) with pure titanium machined surface, acid treated surface, and $Al_2O_3(50{\sim}100\;{\mu}m)$blasted with acid treated surface were used in this study. All mandibular premolars of $1.5{\sim}2$ year old male beagle dogs were extracted. At 3 months after extraction, the implants(${\Phi}$ 4mm, l 6mm) were installed. The beagle were sacrificed at 1, 3 months after installation and then tissues including implants were prepared for non-decalcified specimens. These specimens were analyzed comparatively under light microscope. The results of this study were as follow 1. Higher rate of osseointegration were showed in the $Al_2O_3(50{\sim}100\;{\mu}m)$blasted with acid-treated surface. 2. Increased osseointegration were showed in the $Al_2O_3(50{\sim}100\;{\mu}m)$blasted with acidtreated surface with time. 3. Higher maturation of integration were showed in the $Al_2O_3(50{\sim}100\;{\mu}m)$blasted with acid-treated surface. In conclusion, surface treatment of $Al_2O_3blasted$ with acid might be considered to shorten healing time and improve success rate as increasing contact of implant and bone.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. A few of studies which compared and continuously measured the stability of various surface treated implants in the same individual had been performed. PURPOSE. We aim to find the clinical significance of surface treatments by observing the differences in the stabilization stages of implant stability. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Eight different surface topographies of dental implants were especially designed for the present study. Machined surface implants were used as a control group. 4 nano-treated surface implants(20 nm $TiO_2$ coating surface, heat-treated 80 nm $TiO_2$ coating surface, CaP coating surface, heat treated CaP coating surface) and 3 micro-treated surface implants [resorbable blast media(RBM) surface, sandblast and acid-etched(SAE) surface, anodized RBM surface] were used as experiment groups. All 24 implants were placed in 3 adult dogs. $Periotest^{(R)}$ & ISQ values measured for 8 weeks and all animals were sacrificed at 8 weeks after surgery. Then the histological analyses were done. RESULTS. In PTV, all implants were stabilized except 1 failed implants. In ISQ values, The lowest stability was observed at different times for each individual. The ISQ values were showed increased tendency after 5 weeks in every groups. After 4 to 5 weeks, the values were stabilized. There was no statistical correlation between the ISQ values and PTV. In the histological findings, the bone formation was observed to be adequate in general and no differences among the 8 surface treated implants. CONCLUSIONS. In this study, the difference in the stability of the implants was determined not by the differences in the surface treatment but by the individual specificity.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare removal torques and surface topography between laser treated and sandblasted, large-grit, acid-etched (SLA) treated implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Laser-treated implants (experimental group) and SLA-treated implants (control group) 8 mm in length and 3.4 mm in diameter were inserted into both sides of the tibiae of 12 rabbits. Surface analysis was accomplished using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM; Hitachi S-4800; Japan) under ${\times}25$, ${\times}150$ and ${\times}1,000$ magnification. Surface components were analyzed using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Rabbits were sacrificed after a 6-week healing period. The removal torque was measured using the MGT-12 digital torque meter (Mark-10 Co., Copiague, NY, USA). RESULTS. In the experimental group, the surface analysis showed uniform porous structures under ${\times}25$, ${\times}150$ and ${\times}1,000$ magnification. Pore sizes in the experimental group were 20-40 mm and consisted of numerous small pores, whereas pore sizes in the control group were 0.5-2.0 mm. EDS analysis showed no significant difference between the two groups. The mean removal torque in the laser-treated and the SLA-treated implant groups were 79.4 Ncm (SD = 20.4; range 34.6-104.3 Ncm) and 52.7 Ncm (SD = 17.2; range 18.7-73.8 Ncm), respectively. The removal torque in the laser-treated surface implant group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P=.004). CONCLUSION. In this study, removal torque values were significantly higher for laser-treated surface implants than for SLA-treated surface implants.
State of problem : A number of investigation about increase of surface area via various surface treatments and modification of surface constituent have been carried out. Purpose : The surface characteristics and stability of implants treated with anodic oxidation, fluoride ion incorporation, and groups treated with both methods were evaluated. Material and method : Specimens were divided into six groups, group 1 was the control group with machined surface implants, groups 2 and 3 were anodic oxidized implants (group 2 was treated with 1M $H_2SO_4$ and 185V, group 3 was treated with 0.25M $H_2SO_4$ and $H_3PO_4$ and 300V). Groups 4, 5 and 6 were treated with fluoride. Group 4 was machined implants treated with 0.1% HF, and groups 5 and 6 were groups 2 and 3 treated with 10% NaF respectively. Using variable methods, implant surface characteristics were observed, and the implant stability was evaluated on rabbit tibia at 0, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Result : 1. In comparison of the surface characteristics of anodic oxidized groups, group 2 displayed delicate and uniform oxidation layer with small pore size containing Ti, C, O and showed mainly rutile, but group 3 displayed large pore size and irregular oxidation layer with many crators. 2. In comparison of the surface characteristics of fluoride treated groups 4, 5, 6 and non-fluoride treated groups 1, 2, 3, the configurations were similar but the fluoride treated groups displayed rougher surfaces and composition analysis revealed fluoride in groups 4, 5, 6. 3. The fluoride incorporated anodic oxidized groups showed the highest resonance frequency values and removal torque values, and the values decreased in the order of anodic oxidized groups, fluoride treated group, control group. 4. According to implant stability tests, group 2 and 3 showed significantly higher values than the control group (P<.05). The fluoride treated groups showed relatively higher values than the non fluoride treated groups and there were significant difference between group 4 and group 1 (P<.05). Conclusion : From the results above, it can be considered that the anodic oxidation method is an effective method to increase initial bone stability and osseointegration and fluoride containing implant surfaces enhance new bone formation. Implants containing both of these methods should increase osseointegration, and reduce the healing period.
