  • Among the various precious metals, silver is used in various fields because of its low price than other precious metals. However, the surface of silver remains after rain in the atmosphere containing sulfur ions and chlorine ions, causing silver corrosion and discoloration. Existing documents have developed a anode to prevent corrosion but that are concentrated on secondary batteries. This study tried to prevent corrosion and discoloration of silver by using an Al sacrificial anode. Sulfuric acid decreased the potential of silver and increased the current density at active polarization and OCP. The amount of corrosion of silver with the Al sacrificial anode was reduced from 0.5 % to 6.5%. When silver is used for decoration outside, corrosion and discoloration of silver can be suppressed by installing an Al anode.

  • 3-(4-Iodophenyl)-2-imino-2,3-dihydrobenzo[d]oxazol-5-yl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (4-IPhOXTs) was synthesized and its inhibiting action on the corrosion of stainless steel 316L (SS) in sulfuric acid was investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results of the investigation show that this compound has excellent inhibiting properties for SS corrosion in sulfuric acid. Inhibition efficiency increases with increase in the concentration of the inhibitor. The adsorption of 4-IPhOXTs onto the SS surface followed the Langmuir adsorption model with the free energy of adsorption ΔG0ads of −8.45 kJ mol−1 . Quantum chemical calculations were employed to give further insight into the mechanism of inhibition action of 4-IPhOXTs.

  • In NaCl solutions acidified with $H_2SO_4$, Fe20Cr1.1N alloy showed enhanced pitting corrosion resistance than Fe20Cr alloy. An XPS analysis revealed that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy contained higher cationfraction of Cr than that of Fe20Cr alloy, and nitrogen was incorporated into the film. In addition, it was found that the passive film of Fe20Cr1.1N alloy was thinner and had higher oxygen vacancy density than that of Fe20Cr alloy. Based on these observations, it was concluded that the chemical composition was the determining factor for the protectiveness of the passive film of Fe20Cr based alloy in dilute $H_2SO_4$ solution.

  • Various kinds of corrosion prevention methods have been developed. It is known that the method of electrochemical protection is more effective and economical than any other method on the large scale metal structures in corrosive solutions. Strong acid solutions such as nitric and sulfuric acid solutions are often used in industries, and the expensive stainless steel is almost exclusively used for the equipment that comes in contact with such acid solutions. However, it is more reasonable that carbon steel is used rather than stainless steel depending upon concentration of those acid solutions from the economical viewpoint. In this study, the typical strong acid solution such as nitric and sulfuric acid solutions are chosen for the experiment and the selected materials of specimen are the stainless steels of SUS 304L and SUS 316L, the carbon steels of SS 41, SM 50 and RA 32, and highly pure lead. Electrochemical protection diagrams can be drawn with data from the external cathodic and anodic polarization curves of SUS 304L, SUS 316L and SM 50 steels in 5-60% nitric acid solutions and from those polarization curves of SS 41, RA 32, SM 50 and SUS 316L steels, and highly pure lead in 2.5-98% sulfuric acid solutions at the slow scanning rate. The data obtained with using the determination method of the optimum cathodic protection potential, the Tafel extrapolation method and the characteristics of anodic polarization curves. The main results obtained from the diagrams are as follows: 1) In nitric acid solution : (1) Corrosion potentials exist in each of those corrosion zones on the stainless steels in the lower concentration than about 12% solutions and on the high tensile strength steels in the lower concentration than about 30% solutions, but the corrosion current (density) in each zone is small on the above mentioned former steels and large on the latter ones. (2) The stainless steels can be self-passivated in the higher concentration than 15% solutions, and the high tensile strength steels gives rise to the same phenomenon in the higher concentration than 35% solutions. (3) The stainless steels in the lower concentration than 60% solutions and the high tensile strength steels in the higher concentration than 35% solutions can be used without protection, but the latter steels must ve protected anodically in the lower conccentration than about 30% solutions. 2) In sufuric acid solution : (1) The carbon steels can be self-passivated in the higher concentration than 45% solutions, and the SUS 316L steel in higher concentration than 75% solutions and the lead in all concentration solutions also gives rise to the same phenomenon. (2) The lead in the lower concentration than 80% solutions and the SUS 316L steel in the higher concentration than 80% solutions can be used without protection. (3) The carbon steels in the higher concentration than 50% solutions also can be used without protecting economically, but the SUS 316L steel in the 20-70% solutions are considerably corrosive without protecting anodically.

  • The inhibition performance of sodium gluconate (SG), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and their mixture (SG/CTAB) on the corrosion behavior of ${\alpha}$-brass in 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution has been investigated by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry (ICPS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation techniques. The results reveal that SG with 5ppm CTAB, noted SG/CTAB, acts as a good corrosion inhibitor and its inhibition efficiency reached 89% after 24 h immersion in sulfuric acid solution, but slightly decreased at higher temperatures. The polarization curves displayed that SG/CTAB acts as a cathodic-kind inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies revealed that the addition of 5ppm CTAB to different concentrations of SG considerably increases the corrosion resistance of ${\alpha}$-brass. The SEM-EDS and ICPS analyses support the experimental results. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to understand the adsorption profiles of SG/CTAB on Cu(111) and Zn(111) surfaces.

  • The effect of addition of Cu on the localized corrosion performance of aged duplex stainless steel in chloride media has yet to be explained in a consistent manner, and there is some controversy in the literature regarding the composition of stainless steel and the experimental conditions (pH, temperature, chloride concentration, etc.) used. In this work, the effect of the addition of Cu on the microstructure, hardness, and corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel in an acidic chloride or high concentration sulfuric acid solutions was investigated for annealed and aged alloys. The Cu addition of annealed duplex stainless steel strengthened the alloy and reduced the ferrite contents of the alloy, and it also increased the polarization behavior in chloride or sulfuric solutions, except for the case of a high potential in acidic chloride solution. However, the Cu addition of aged duplex stainless steel reduced the formation of harmful phases such as sigma and kai and increased the polarization behavior in acidic chloride or sulfuric solutions up to 0.8 wt% of the Cu content, after which it slightly decreased at 0.8 wt% Cu or more.

  • Polymer concrete shows excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance compared with conventional normal cement concrete. The polymer concrete Is drawing a strong interest as high-performance materials in the construction industry Resins using recycled PET offer the possibility of a lower source cost of materials for making useful polymer concrete products. Also the recycling of PET in polymer concrete would help solve some of the solid waste problems Posed by plastics and save energy. An objective of this paper is to estimate the damage of sulfuric acid, through investigating recycled PET polymer concrete, immersed at sulfuric acid solution for 84 days. As a result of testing, recycled PET PC, used $CaCO_3$ as filler, makes a problem of appearance and strength if they are exposed for long term at corrosion environment. On the other hand, recycled PET PC, used fly-ash as filler, had less effect on decrease in weight and strength. Recycled PET PC is excellent chemical resistance, resulting in the role of unsaturated polyester resin which consists of polymer chain structure accomplishes bond of aggregates and filler strongly. Also, recycled PET PC, used fly-ash as filler, is stronger resistance of sulfuric acid corrosion than $CaCO_3$, because it is composed of $SiO_2$ and very strong glassy crystal structure. Therefore, recycled PET PC, used fly-ash as filler, is available under corrosion circumstances like sewer pipe or waste disposal plant.

  • Sewage facilities mainly consisted of concrete structures are being deteriorated seriously by biodeterioration originated from sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. To prevent biochemical corrosion of the sewage concrete, antibiotics which prevent growth of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were developed. Recently, to evaluate biochemical corrosion properties of concrete, antimicrobial performance and resistance to sulfuric acid were investigated respectively. But, in this study, to evaluate it complexly, concrete specimen covered with antibiotics were exposed in the actual sewage environment and were investigated about corrosion properties after three months. As a result, weight change ratio, nature potential and sulfuric ratio of concrete covered with antibiotics were less than plain concrete.

  • Aluminum alloys have poor corrosion resistance compared to the pure aluminum due to the additive elements. Thus, anodizing technology artificially generating thick oxide films are widely applied nowadays in order to improve corrosion resistance. Anodizing is one of the surface modification techniques, which is commercially applicable to a large surface at a low price. However, most studies up to now have focused on its commercialization with hardly any research on the assessment and improvement of the physical characteristics of the anodized films. Therefore, this study aims to select the optimum temperature of sulfuric electrolyte to perform excellent corrosion resistance in the harsh marine environment through electrochemical experiment in the seawater upon generating porous films by variating the temperatures of sulfuric electrolyte. To fabricate uniform porous film of 5083 aluminum alloy, we conducted electro-polishing under the 25 V at $5^{\circ}C$ condition for three minutes using mixed solution of ethanol (95 %) and perchloric (70 %) acid with volume ratio of 4:1. Afterward, the first step surface modification was performed using sulfuric acid as an electrolyte where the electrolyte concentration was maintained at 10 vol.% by using a jacketed beaker. For anode, 5083 aluminum alloy with thickness of 5 mm and size of $2cm{\times}2cm$ was used, while platinum electrode was used for cathode. The distance between the two was maintained at 3 cm. Anodic polarization test was performed at scan rate of 2 mV/s up to +3.0 V vs open circuit potential in natural seawater. Surface morphology was compared using 3D analysis microscope to observe the damage behavior. As a result, the case of surface modification showed a significantly lower corrosion current density than that without modification, indicating excellent corrosion resistance.
