  • This study was performed to convert NOx in atmosphere by photochemical reaction utilizing the eco-friendly solar energy. The mortar specimen coated with photocatalyst was fabricated and the photochemical conversion efficiency of NOx was analyzed. The photocatalyst coated concrete was fabricated by first adding TiO2 photocatalyst on the bottom of mold first and next adding cement mortar and, then, curing the concrete mortar. The grease was sprayed on the bottom of mold in advance so that the concrete can be demolded easily after curing. The conversion efficiencies of NOx by photochemical reactions were investigated systematically by changing the process variable conditions of amount of TiO2 coating, UV-A light intensity, total gas flow rate, relative humidity and initial NOx concentration. It was confirmed that the photocatalyst coated concrete fabricated in this study could convert NOx successfully for various process conditions in atmosphere. In future, we believe this research result can be utilized as basic data to design the infrastructure of building, tunnel and road for controlling efficiently the air pollutants such as NOx, SOx, and VOCs.

  • We investigated the effects of the re-oxidation temperature and time on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistivity characteristics of Sm-doped $BaTiO_3$ sintered at $1200{\sim}1260^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in a reducing atmosphere (3% $H_2/N_2$), followed by re-oxidization processes in air, in which re-oxidization temperature and time were $600{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ and $1{\sim}10$h, respectively. The result reveals that Smdoped (Ba,Ca)$TiO_3$ ceramics fired in a reducing atmosphere exhibit low PTC characteristics, whereas the sample re-oxidized at $800^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in air exhibit pronounced PTC characteristics. The room-temperature resistivity and jumping characteristics of resistivity (${\rho}_{max}/{\rho}25^{\circ}C$) decrease with Sm contents. The PTC characteristics with reoxidization time at $800^{\circ}C$ have improved about $2{\sim}3$ orders of magnitude whereas differed according to the sintering temperature. The 0.7 at% Sm-doped (Ba,Ca)$TiO_3$ samples reveal the best PTC characteristics in the present range of formula and processes.

  • It is a challenge from an industrial point of view to fabricate silicon nitride substrates with high thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties for power devices from high-purity Si scrap powder by means of thick film processes such as tape casting. We characterize the residual carbon and oxygen content after the binder burnout followed by nitridation as a function of the temperature in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C-700^{\circ}C$ and the atmosphere in a green tape sample which consists of high-purity Si powder and polymer binders such as polyvinyl butyral and dioctyl phthalate. The optimum condition of binder burnout is suggested in terms of the binder removal temperature and atmosphere. If considering nitridation, the burnout of the organic binder in air compared to that in a nitrogen atmosphere could offer an advantage when fabricating reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ substrates for power devices to enable low carbon and oxygen contents in green tape samples.

  • The effects of $CO_2$ ppm in atmosphere on the values of the total emissivity are studied. The predictions by several methods are compared. The predicted value differences between modified Kondratyev model and Hottel model are the smallest with in the range of values tested. The $CO_2$ ppm is varied from 300 ppm to 600 ppm. By Wide Band model, the total emissivity increases with increasing density-path length product rather linearly up to 0.1 g/$cm^2$. For given $CO_2$ ppm, the total emissivity increases as the air thickness increases. The same is true for both temperature and pressure increase. The temperature range tested is 220 to 300 K. Around 260K, the total emissivity is less sensitive with increasing temperature than with decreasing temperature. The pressure is varied from 0.94 to 1.06 atm. The percentage change of total emissivity with pressure change from 1atm is at most the percentage change of the pressure.

  • The effects of the debinding atmosphere on the properties of sintered reaction-bonded $Si_3N_4$ (SRBSN) ceramics prepared by tape casting method were investigated. Si green tape was produced from Si slurry of Si powder, using 11.5 wt% polyvinyl butyral as the organic binder and 35 wt% dioctyl phthalate as the plasticizer. The debinding process was conducted in air and $N_2$ atmospheres at $400^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. The nitridation process of the debinded Si specimens was performed at $1450^{\circ}C$, followed by sintering at $1850^{\circ}C$ and 20 MPa. The results revealed that the debinding atmosphere had a significant effect on $Si_3N_4$ densification and thermal conductivity. Owing to the higher sintered density and larger grain size, the thermal conductivity of $Si_3N_4$ specimens debinded in air was higher than that of the samples debinded in $N_2$. Thus, debinding in air could be suitable for the manufacture of high-performance SRBSN substrates by tape casting.

  • The effects that processing atmospheres and alloy composition have on the wetting characteristics of Al-Mg alloys on the $SiO_{2}$ substrate were investigated by measuring the wetting angles. It was observed that the wetting behavior of the Al-Mg alloys on the $SiO_{2}$ substrate vary depending on the Mg content of the alloys and atmospheres. The results showed that the contact angle decreases with increasing Mg content, angle is generally larger in the $N_{2}$ atmosphere than in the Ar atmosphere. We discussed the validity of the results obtained from the wetting test on the basis of recent theories and the results observed from the actual penetration tests.

  • Geopolymer binders fascinate the attention of researchers as a replacement to cement binder in conventional concrete. One-ton production of cement releases one ton of carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere. In the replacement of cement by geopolymer material, there are two advantages: one is the reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere, second is the utilization of Fly ash and Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) are by-products from coal and steel industries. This paper focuses on the mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete. The framework considered in this research work is geopolymer source (Fly ash, GGBFS and crimped steel fibre) and alkaline activator which consists of NaOH and Na2SiO3 of molarity 8M. Here the Na2SiO3 / NaOH ratio was taken as 2.5. The variables considered in this experimental work include Binder content (360,420 and 450 kg/m3), the proportion of Fly ash and GGBS (70-30, 60-40 and 50-50) for three different grades of Geopolymer concrete (GPC) GPC 20, GPC 40 and GPC 60. The percentage of crimped steel fibres was varied as 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%. Generally, the inclusion of steel fibres increases the flexural and split tensile strength of Geopolymer concrete. The optimum dosage of steel fibres was found to be 0.4% (by volume fraction).

  • Proton conductors have attracted considerable attention for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), hydrogen pump, gas sensor, and membrane separators. Doped $SrCeO_3$ exhibits appreciable proton conductivity in hydrogen-containing atmosphere at high temperature. However commercial realization has been hampered due to the reactivity of $SrCeO_3$ with $CO_2$. The chemical stability and proton conductivity are dependent on dopant type. The purpose of this work is to investigate chemical stability of $SrCe_{0.95}Gd_{0.05}O_{3-\alpha}-Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-\beta}$ composites in $CO_2$ and $H_2$ gases. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed in gaseous $CO_2$ and electrical conductivity of the composites were also measured between 500 and $900^{\circ}C$ in air and $H_2$ atmosphere. $SrCe_{0.95}Gd_{0.05}O_{3-\alpha}-Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-\beta}$ composite membranes showed good chemical stability of in $CO_2$ atmosphere and high conductivity at hydrogen condition. The hydrogen permeation of $SrCe_{0.95}Gd_{0.05}O_{3-\alpha}-Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-\beta}$ composite membranes was investigated as a function of volumetric content of $SrCe_{0.95}Gd_{0.05}O_{3-\alpha}$. The $SrCe_{0.95}Gd_{0.05}O_{3-\alpha}-Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{2-\beta}$(6:4) membrane with a thickness of 1.0 mm showed the highest hydrogen permeability with the flux reaching of 0.12 $ml/min{\cdot}cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ in 100%$H_2/N_2$ as feed gas.

  • Porous W-10 wt% Ti alloys are prepared by freeze-drying a $WO_3-TiH_2$/camphene slurry, using a sintering process. X-ray diffraction analysis of the heat-treated powder in an argon atmosphere shows the $WO_3$ peak of the starting powder and reaction-phase peaks such as $WO_{2.9}$, $WO_2$, and $TiO_2$ peaks. In contrast, a powder mixture heated in a hydrogen atmosphere is composed of the W and TiW phases. The formation of reaction phases that are dependent on the atmosphere is explained by a thermodynamic consideration of the reduction behavior of $WO_3$ and the dehydrogenation reaction of $TiH_2$. To fabricate a porous W-Ti alloy, the camphene slurry is frozen at $-30^{\circ}C$, and pores are generated in the frozen specimens by the sublimation of camphene while drying in air. The green body is hydrogen-reduced and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The sintered sample prepared by freeze-drying the camphene slurry shows large and aligned parallel pores in the camphene growth direction, and small pores in the internal walls of the large pores. The strut between large pores consists of very fine particles with partial necking between them.

  • W-10 wt% Ti alloys that have a homogeneous microstructure are prepared by thermal decomposition of $WO_3-TiH_2$ powder mixtures and spark plasma sintering. The reduction and dehydrogenation behavior of $WO_3$ and $TiH_2$ are analyzed by temperature programmed reduction and a thermogravimetric method, respectively. The X-ray diffraction analysis of the powder mixture, heat-treated in an argon atmosphere, shows W- oxides and $TiO_2$ peaks. Conversely, the powder mixtures heated in a hydrogen atmosphere are composed of W, $WO_2$ and $TiO_2$ phases at $600^{\circ}C$ and W and W-rich ${\beta}$ phases at $800^{\circ}C$. The densified specimen by spark plasma sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum using hydrogen-reduced $WO_3-TiH_2$ powder mixtures shows a Vickers hardness value of 4.6 GPa and a homogeneous microstructure with pure W, ${\beta}$ and Ti phases. The phase evolution dependent on the atmosphere and temperature is explained by the thermal decomposition and reaction behavior of $WO_3$ and $TiH_2$.
